I may do that but , I found this thread probably too late(I bought AppleCare plus as well...never thought they would cover this issue(Do they cover issue where one of the keys is causing a pressure mark on the screen. I have this in the center of my 15 inch 2013 MacBook Pro). I stupidly assumed this would fall under user error

My MacBook is 6mo too old now.

Any joy with this? Or anyone have similar issues?

Yes, I mentioned it in post #272. Brought it to Genius Bar in Barcelona Apple Store and they fixed it the next day. I had cracked the screen a few months earlier, so they couldn't promise that the Staingate recall/warranty would cover my screen, but the next day they said it was fixed.

The program is still fully functional. After taking my Laptop to the Apple Store (Germany) they simply nodded and took the laptop in for repairs. It took them 12 days to fix it, which I found quite slow, but nevertheless the laptop is new and the screen looks awesome.

So from what I read, the run time of the program is at 4 years after purchase date? So since mine was bought on 4.1.2017, I would have till 4.1.2021 to repair it if this where to happen again?

I'm offering a service to repair this defect via Craig's List, Boston: https://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/cps/d/staingate-repair-for-mac/6749097286.html

I developed a method for safely removing the anti-glare coating which restores the display. Works great and it's a lot cheaper than replacing the display.

Sorry but 100$ to remove the antiglare coating?

And also this... "We guarantee the anti-glare coating will not return on its own." Does this also happen when it's not Halloween? Sorry but had to comment on it. /Offtopic

Hey everyone.

I have been recently suggested by the apple advisor by phone to bring the macbook pro to apple authorised service to change the screen, cos the coating totally went off. He mentioned that thr service is free of charge. Whereas after the inspection of the machine thr Service sent me an invoice to be paid with 600eur to change the screen. Stating that I will be charged this sum unless the check of the purchase is provided. Well, who keeps checks these day, right..? )) So I had to contact the apple advisor once again and yes, the check of purchase is to be provided when bringing your machine for this program of the screen change.

Could you guys please confirm that you are smarter than me keeping your purchasing checks..?

If bought it from Apple directly a receipt is already attached to an Apple ID. If not, then yeah, you'll have to prove date of purchase with a receipt or other verification.

For those wondering, Apple is still accepting warranty changes for this issue.

My MBP 15 13" was starting to show signs of this issue, and after a bit of googling i found this thread.
I brought my mac to the shop and they accepted it right away. 2 days after i got a message from the workshop saying my mac was on its way back to shop for me to be picked up soon. quick and easy.

My MBP is about 3.5 years old with no other signs of wear of any issues.
Handling was quick and easy. They knew about the "Staingate" issue and accepted it right away.

Location: CPH Denmark. Humac Frederiksberg center.
* I had the receipt.

Thanks for the guidance from this forum.

Yep - a week ago I was booking my laptop in (late 2013 MBP) for a new battery here in Switzerland and asked about the screen coating. I was hoping they'd somehow mis-read 4 years as 5 years and let me change mine for free, but they were too on the ball :) They all knew about the 4-year replacement offer.

Ah what a pity, just visited my mother in Switzerland and her computer is facing the same issue and is a late 2013 model too

It depends when she purchased it (from new) rather than when it was manufactured. So if somehow she bought it less than 4 years ago she'll be fine. However, I guess no-one bought a Late-2013 MBP in 2015!

Yes sadly she bought it in February of 2014 last year.
Oh well, maybe I'll take off the coating if it gets too bad. Did that with my 2012 retina and it did work well but makes it more tricky to work in sunlight

Hi all,

I'm really pissed off. I just picked up my MacBook Pro 15 from 2015 from an apple authorized service store (in Portugal we don't have official ones) which apple sent me to replace my screen with peeling of coating.

As soon as I arrived home I noted (didn't noted that on the store unfortunately) that this screen does not say MacBook Pro on the bottom as they normal do... No big issue for me. However, I noted that the auto brightness was not working. I reset the SMC, nothing. Went to System Hardware Report, under the Graphics/Screen I noted that on the LCD info it puts "no" in front of the auto brightness. What the hell! Did they installed a counterfeit monitor on my MacBook?? Now the store is closed until 2nd of January and I have to wait to go there asking for some type of explanation.

Anyone on here had a similar issue?

UPDATE: Auto brightness is working know after resetting the PRAM!!

Thanks

Mine doesn't say anything on the bottom - they don't. I've just checked my hardware info and it also says "no" under auto brightness, but auto brightness works just fine.

Late 2013 MBP 15"

Thanks a lot for your reply.

I ranted too soon. After reseting the PRAM it's working.

Does it says 24 bit (
ARGB8888)?
I don't remember what previous one said...

My LCD has no text on it at all. Anywhere, that I can see. The bottom of the laptop case has the serial number, some other stuff, and "MacBook Pro".

Hi folks! I bought my MacBook Pro Retina 15" on January 7, 2015. Just called Apple support (Feb 14th, 2019, 4 years and 1 month), the guy first told me that manufacturer warranty no longer covered this issue. When I mentioned this article in MacRumors I was put on hold while he consulted a senior advisor. In no time he came back saying that Apple will replace my screen free of charge and set me up an appointment with an Apple Store in 2 days. So apparently they could be still covering this after the 4 year period. I'll let you know... Thanks for this thread and thanks again MacRumors for being there!!!

Apple has extended free repairs of anti-reflective coating issues for select MacBook and MacBook Pro models.

Apple has authorized coverage within four years from the original purchase date of affected models, according to an internal document distributed to Apple Authorized Service Providers and later obtained by MacRumors.

Apple first began this repair program in October 2015, and already extended it once, after some MacBook and MacBook Pro users experienced issues with the anti-reflective coating wearing off or delaminating on Retina displays.

UPDATE: Got it done! I was very courteous on the phone with Apple on my 1st call, asking them about the extension of the program from 3 to 4 years, which they confirmed after talking to a supervisor (Although the guy did not ask me the exact day I had bought the MacBook). Then I went to an Apple Store. On the 1st try, the Genius Bar lady came back saying that I would have to pay for it, and again I was very courteous in asking about the extension and telling her about the conversation I had had with Apple on the phone before going to the store. She checked and saw the notes on my account from that phone call. She went in again to talk to the manager and came back telling me that although I had missed the 4 year due date for a month, the manager still authorized to cover for the repair. Since they didn't have the replacement screen at that store and they had to keep the computer for 7 to 10 days to ship it out to have it repaired, I asked the lady if she could check for me if the part was available at another store. She kindly set it up for me calling another Apple Store 10 miles away and I went there right away with a printed order. Got there, the guy told me that there was no way they could get it done the same day and it could be ready in 2 days. Left the store and got a phone call an hour later from a guy that had my computer open and asked if I wanted to replace the battery that was swollen. Told them no, only the screen. An hour later the computer was ready, and picked it up with no cost. Apple covered the whole $680 replacement cost. So, I would say that within the 4 year coverage by the program, you should be ok. If you bought the Mac more than 4 years ago, be kind and courteous and know that managers should be allowed to authorize the replacement with no cost for you. I would do it with no delay. Good luck!

My 2016 MBP may have fallen victim to this screen issue, but I'm not certain. I have splotchy discolored spots in the screen that are only visible when the screen is on and with a light colored background. I took it to the Apple Store yesterday and they took one look at it and accepted it for warranty repair under AppleCare.

I had this issue with the 2016 MacBook 12 inch it had a cracked LCD and similar marks to the screen, the so called genius refused to replace the damaged screen. I never knew about the warranty program. I had AppleCare too didn’t make a difference. It’s clear they could have honoured the repair. We get **** service from Apple in the uk, we mess up(4 letter expletive) all foreign companies with a prestigious brand. Just so we can have everyone on par with the poor uk companies.

Just had my 2015 15" MacBook Pro screen replaced under their anti-reflective repair program. Couldn't have been easier. Walked into my local Apple store, showed him the problem and he agree'd with me wholeheartedly and took my laptop and sent it off to their repair center. Three days later FedEx delivered it to my front door good as new. Love Apple customer service!! Thanks Apple!

Macrumors: "The damage appears to be caused by a variety of factors, including the pressure of the keyboard and trackpad on the display when closed, and the use of incorrect third-party cleaning solutions with microfiber cloths." NOTE: Non of my AR issues have occurred anywhere beyond the black bezel - nothing in the middle of the screen and no key "outlines".

What a load of B.S. Anyone with common sense and logic can see that even on the 15" model there are no keys or any protruding elements that touch the black bezel and in fact the black bezel is recessed to further ensure nothing hits the bezel area, therefore its an issue with how the AR coating is applied (phase deposition). Blaming the owner for damaging their own hardware is unacceptable especially when people such as myself don't use chemicals / solvents / sprays and simply use plain old water.

It starts initially as a spot / mark that simply looks like dried water then when you clean the screen as recommended by apple with a lint-free cloth this effectively breaks down the coating and then air on its own will allow the coating to keep degrading of its own accord. Im now up to system two (mid 2015 Macbook Pro that was provided as a replacement system in July 2017) and have already contacted Apple executive relations as I don't want to go down this path again like I did with the previous system.

What annoys me is that by the time I found out they were covering this issue it was too late. I even bought AppleCare for my MacBook Pro. As far as I’m concerned, they should be sending emails regarding these kind of issues to those of us who bought AppleCare. The issue only gets worse over time

I bought my macbook in March 2014 (5 years from now).
After contacting apple support through phone and asking me the date, the answer to my issue was that the computer was eligible for a screen replacement and suggest to leave the computer in a authorized assistance. I deliver the computer in a local reseller, and after 4 days the answer no!

It is the fourth time I have a problem with apple hardware that is due to the way this products were made.
1. Power G5 [2001] died due to a northbridge problem (The northbridge has become loose and requires replacement or a solder reflow) this happened with multiple machines [not replaced].
2. Macbook [2004] with a defective battery [not replaced] (there was a program to change the batteries, I realize this too late)
3. Macbook [2004] (white plastic) top case cracks [replaced] (It was replaced by apple free of charge - a special replacement program)
4. Power Mac [2008] issues with the power supply, it was a defective power supply [not replaced]. I left in an authorized assistance for replacement 4 months before the guarantee ended. The computer was 4 months in tests and they delivered the computer to me saying that the computer was ok. One day after the deliver the symptoms were the same (the computer did not startup). When I went back to the assistance they told me that the computer was out of guarantee!!!!! I had to pay a lawyer to solve this problem!!!

Now, I cannot change a defective screen because I have realized this issue one year later!!!

Is there another reseller or an Apple store you could visit? Odd for them to say yes over support and then it not being eligible
