What if the anti reflective coating is not flaking yet can I still get it replaced before the program ends?
No. It's not a blanket replacement. You need to have some signs of flaking. The argument from their side would be that not every display will inevitably flake, and if you have no problem, there's nothing to repair. Pretty reasonable IMO, and frankly, if you've gone this long without an issue, I'd count your blessings and not risk things getting mucked up, not to mention the loss of use of the laptop while it's in the shop.

FWIW I took my late 2013 15 inch retina MacBook Pro into a UK Apple store today with Staingate issues. They authorised a new display to be fitted free of charge under UK consumer law.

In my experience it started with what appeared to be dry water spots then once those "broke open" from using a lint-free cloth it spreads like a virus and will continue to degrade of its own accord. It's pretty easy to notice as without the AR coating it looks like a mirror.

I took my early 2013 in and they are replacing the screen free of charge after speaking to support on the phone.

When did you buy that laptop? If you bought it in 2013 then it's over 4 years and according to the opening post is outside the free replacement window.

I was offered a free replacement screen over the phone and the genius agreed so it was obviously done on a case by case thing I think.

Can you say more? Did you make a Genius Bar appointment first and then call Apple support, or the other way around?

I called apple support first. Sadly I got my mac back with a new screen a little dirty and big scratch on the bottom.

I've noticed my 13 rMBP from late-2013 get worse. Just phoned Apple Support and they didn't qubble about getting it replaced for free. Booked it in to a Genius Bar next week. I've got the golden hue showing up really bad at the top and patchy on the left/right hand sides. Fingers crossed! Wish I'd got it done earlier as I've always seen it, but always thought it was smudged on dirt.

Was this within the 4 years from purchase date, or beyond it?

Just an update, spoke with a senior advisor today who confirmed the replacement programme and it is indeed 4 years from the date of purchase so my MacBook is now in store screen getting replaced free of charge, time frame they gave me is 3/5 days

Hello, has anyone been successful with getting a screen replaced that is cracked, AND has the delamination? I unfortunately have a screen that is cracked but still works. I wonder if they will just say no due to the crack?

Unless you have an amazing story for a CS code repair, not likely. It'll get refused as accidental damage, they might offer you the flat rate repair option and send it to depot though.

I’ll echo this. I’ve had a couple affected laptops, and when I called in, I spoke with multiple people, and they ALL asked about any existing damage.

I have noticed this issue on my MacBook Retina 2017, not even six months old but it is only really really slight with the peeling happening on the very edge of the screen near the rim. Would this qualify for replacement or does it have to be pretty extensive?

It qualifies. It’s also a progressive problem. Once it starts, it’s only going to get worse. For example, if you start cleaning your screen now with just water and a gentle lint free cloth as Apple recommends, the problem will only spread.

My theory remains that oils from hands and/or dirt and debris that transfer from the keyboard and palmrest to the screen begin the problem. So do what you can to avoid touching the replacement screen in any way.

Thanks :)
As I try to wipe the screen with a lint free cloth and water; it appears a clear film is peeling off but the cloth also gets black marks on - does this sound about right and what is the black?

Thanks :)

The black just sounds like dust and other debris particles. The coating itself has no color. Has it been a while since you cleaned it? You’d be surprised what a magnet the screen is for dust, especially if you get some fingerprint smudges on it (which basically are like very small emulsions that capture that dust).

Hi again - Do they replace the entire top part of the Macbook or is it just the Retina display itself? (as it appears the black rubber rim is deteriorating that runs around the circumference of the screen on mine too).

Hi,

is this still a thing?
If yes, is it applicable for my mac(Pro 15" 2016 with Touch Bar) with expired warranty? And can I take it to an Apple store in Australia even if Mac was bought in EU(asking because they didn't want to repair my iPhone Smart Battery cover :D)?

Thanks

Just bought a Late 2013 MacBook 13" Retina of eBay and it was advertised with staingate, but I took a punt.

When I got it it was awful so I checked if there was a programme set up for replacements and found this.

Phoned AppleCare and they said it was purchased on 03/July/2014, so was within 4 years by 2 weeks. I was honest that it was an eBay buy.

I was worried by the pitting damage in the top left of the screen, but no bother from the Apple Store.

Turn around was 7 hours. Picked it up with a new screen later that evening! Great service!

Took my mid-2015, 15" in to the store, was told 3 days turn around they will mail it back to me.
