Maybe Facebook is a little scared of Ping getting a little too popular? I don't think they have anything to worry about (for now ;) )

Facebook needs this

** Well come on , ~Facebook has been around a good few years now and frankly its getting old..

An 'Apple-Facebook' partnership would create a huge expansion to social networking.

This partnership would at first be more beneficial to Apple.
But considering that everything Apple touches turns to gold, then I think that in the long term this will be essential to Facebooks survival.

I couldn't disagree anymore. FB is a great tool for staying in touch with people. I use it to stay in touch with members of my family who live on the other side of the country, and the other side of the world. It's nice to be able to keep up on what is going on in the lives of loved ones and friends. It's also quickly becoming a family photo album. It's a lot more convenient to post photos of your vacation of FB than it is to email them out to people, IMO. FB also has been great for keeping up with friends and classmates over the summer.

Saying that FB is useless and is just a directory service makes absolutely no sense to me.

Think about it, how many things are just based on it being a (comprehensive) directory of contacts?
You could do those things in 1000s of different (and mostly better) ways.
The FB website is crap, let's be honest.

Facebook is nothing more than a directory of contacts at this point.
It is time for users to liberate that information. The FB website is useless.

I agree, we need an open standard to come to the rescue.

In the meantime I'll persist with my Facebook privacy policy - i.e. not signing up. Although it's getting increasingly hard to resist.

As an aside, Spotify also has social features and it's a hassle to add friends if you are not on Facebook. You need to type some bizarre syntax into the search field which most people won't figure out (spotify:user:spotify_username) whereas there is a big button to import facebook friends.

LOL Apple tries to pull a stunt that they would quickly blocked and complain about.

Apple where hypocrites live.

Now I watch and wait for the Apple Fanboys to come and attack FB over this.

Calling people fanboys must be some kind of iHater sheepish behavior.

buttons

I think the buttons being vertical are dumb, but do this in Terminal and you're good to go:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes full-window -boolean YES

Heh, thanks, I think I'll just live with it! I was just curious, although, as iTunes seems to be a preview of upcoming OSX UI changes, I'd say all apps will go to this eventually.

PS. I predict a Facebook / MySpace merge in the next 18mo.

Yes none of that was possible before facebook.

Thank god for facebook to use the internet to allow people to contact each other over great distances.

Im so sick of everything being linked to facebook. the centre of the universe has just been found.

I totally agree, there are people who use facebook obsessively, and there are people who use it as a way to keep in contact with friends and family. Its a bulletin board for your social group. Or if we want to get into the mcluhan ideas, its like the modern village, but you get to choose your fellow villagers.
I think what the person you were replying to was trying to say though, is that we need a better way of managing all of this outside of corporate ownership like facebook. Something more open source like email, but as a social network. I don't know if we will ever achieve true interoperability between networks though.

I realize that it was possible to contact people over great distances before FB. But IMO, it has made it more convenient. Believe me when you're trying to share photos with your 90 year old great grandmother who struggles to use a computer, FB is easier than sending an email with photos which then causes a security warning when you attempt to download them, etc.

FB just made communicating with people easier. I'm not saying that it's the greatest thing ever invented either. I just don't get why some people have this hatred for FB, and other examples of web 2.0

Your opinion is your opinion, but your grammar is horrendous. Missing a few words in those first two?.....

Microsoft is down for the count, Google is starting to turn, but not beyond redemption, Apple is good, and being attacked for it, while Facebook is genuinely evil.

What.

They got lots of signups with the promise that your data would only be seen by your friends.... then they changed the terms. That's fraud, in my book.

You're responsible for protecting your data. Disable application access. Now when I'm around the Internet, instead of seeing the Facebook tie-in I see a box that says I haven't activated data sharing. It isn't rocket science.

They won't let you delete the data either, and that counts as invasion of privacy in my book.

What.

If I remember correctly, the original creator of the Facebook for iPhone application was denied access by Apple to private APIs within iOS, so he had to recreate some of the UI functionality from scratch.

I wonder if this is some kind of retribution? :p

The true measure is how many artists use this new tech and how many simply avoide iTunes in favor of CD-only distribuiton. (John Cougar Melloncamp, Beatles, Jethro Tull).

Just checked, and the UK iTunes Store has Aqualung, Songs from the Wood, Minstrel in the Gallery, Thick as a Brick, Too Old To Rock'n'Roll, J-Tull Dot Com, Rock Island, Crest of a Knave, and a dozen other Jethro Tull albums.

I don't think people hate the convenience of it. Personally I only don't care for the dipsh*t nerd with a hard-on for phony social acceptance who controls it. Wish he'd move back East...

I think most people don't like Facebook in the United States because it's become a replacement for [instead of just a small helpful addition to] people's social lives. It's complicated an already f-'d up social scene.

Agree. To me, the bullcrap alarm is screaming hard now. Facebook has some of the best global infrastructure network engineers out there. Hell, there are automated tools to balance server loads like this. IMO, anyone saying this is a technical issue is blowing a smoke screen. This is all politics.

My guess is that, FB is trying to make Apple look bad by pulling the plug on iTunes to Facebook and blaming it on Apple. If there is no direct agreement, a third party Facebook to iTunes friends list conversion tool / tools will surface. Would not be surprised if someone is working on a Window / Mac / iPhone app that does this right now.
