I originally had the LG screen. I had the ghosting and then the flickering issue. When Apple repaired it under warranty, they replaced the screen with a Samsung. No ghosting now and, so far, no flickering either.
Legally, Apple should indicate externally what brand panel is used so customer's are informed. Its morally wrong to hide this information on the basis they are all identical - picture says a thousand words. Apple should only use Samsung for displays as they are better and don't have the yellow tinge that all LG panels seem to have. Im surprised Apple still buy from LG, considering this issue, and the same issue on the iMac's. Only Samsung should be used, and anyone that has an LG display should get it swapped for a Samsung model instantly - no questions asked.
honestly even with the best quality controls, you do sometimes get a few screens pass. If you are manufacturing over 10 million of the same item and you check even 1 in 100, the first might right, but the second might be faulty. Apple can easily just get rid of this lawsuit by just replacing the screen for free, but sadly to get corporations to do things, they have to be sued first.
Now I know there will be many people who will defend Apple for this, as the issue is relatively minor and an inconvenience at most for the majority of sufferers, but if any company knowingly sold me something that was probably faulty, they would instantly lose my custom.
At this point anybody buying a retina MBP that can't deal with the image retention issue is a complete idiot.
Yet we have endless post here indicating that Apple does address the issue when it is real.
You must not have read the entire article. Apple does not acknowledge this as a problem. And will gladly show you the door out.
dumb question but what are the chances of getting a Samsung screen with buying a retina macbookp pro?
Is 'ghosting' the same as 'burn-in'? I think not ...
Its only when you are on 100% brightness and on a static screen for a while...it goes away pretty quickly when you go to another website/app.
Sigh, another stupid lawsuit. Just take the thing back, I'm sure Apple will refund you.
Everyone wants a piece of the Apple pie these days.
In console type:
ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6
You will get:
Color LCD
XXXnnnnnnnn
XXX = LP, means you have a LG monitor
XXX = LSN, means you have a Samsung monitor
Then Apple needs to simply issue a software update so that the screensaver comes on all by itself to prevent screen burn in with no way for consumers to override it and burn their screens. After all, the burn-in is completely normal, and the solution is a screen saver.
Why would Apple configure its systems in a manner so that users could burn in the screens? The screen savers are there for a reason, and it is necessary that they be used to prevent the normal burn-in that always happens with every single IPS screen ever made by anybody anywhere in the world.
If the phenomenon is normal, and if a screensaver is the solution, then mandatory screensavers seems like the proper thing for Apple to do to have the best possible User Experience.
Thank you. Macrumors needs to use proper terminology. Ghosting is quick motion blur from slow pixel response or input lag. Image retention is the problem we see here and it is only worse with neutral grey backgrounds. It'll do it on older IPS screens as well after years of use.
Love the sarcasm here - fantastic. +10
Screen savers that the user can't control - the height of absurdity!
