I originally had the LG screen. I had the ghosting and then the flickering issue. When Apple repaired it under warranty, they replaced the screen with a Samsung. No ghosting now and, so far, no flickering either.

The biggest problem i see with this whole debacle is you have one screen which clearly exhibits this problem then another that does not at all.

Check out the thousands of posts where people who have Samsung screens feel like they have been blessed by the pope himself and then look at LG people who are clearly not so happy.

If both screen manufactures had this problem we would not be having this discussion as you would have 0 choice in the matter, but since there is a good screen out there image retention free, well yeah you get the point...

Mine just started getting it bad and i will be certainly making my way to an Apple store which sadly i have to do not because i want to and of course it might kill an afternoon of my life or longer depending how long it takes to replace.

Legally, Apple should indicate externally what brand panel is used so customer's are informed. Its morally wrong to hide this information on the basis they are all identical - picture says a thousand words. Apple should only use Samsung for displays as they are better and don't have the yellow tinge that all LG panels seem to have. Im surprised Apple still buy from LG, considering this issue, and the same issue on the iMac's. Only Samsung should be used, and anyone that has an LG display should get it swapped for a Samsung model instantly - no questions asked.

What does it matter ? It either works or doesn't (return it if it doesn't work to your satisfaction).

honestly even with the best quality controls, you do sometimes get a few screens pass. If you are manufacturing over 10 million of the same item and you check even 1 in 100, the first might right, but the second might be faulty. Apple can easily just get rid of this lawsuit by just replacing the screen for free, but sadly to get corporations to do things, they have to be sued first.

+1

Now I know there will be many people who will defend Apple for this, as the issue is relatively minor and an inconvenience at most for the majority of sufferers, but if any company knowingly sold me something that was probably faulty, they would instantly lose my custom.

I just want to know how much more likely the LGs are failing than the Sumsung and not from forums where the sample is always skewed as most that don't have problems would never seek out forums like this to complain.

If the LG screens are at fault the Apple should stop using them and replace the faulty LG ones with new LCDs or new computers.

I've heard similar complaints about the 27" iMac, I have one. How do I know what LCD it has. I've had no issues that I know of yet.

Yes. Totally agree. rMBP is a premium machine with premium price tag and Apple should therefore use premium parts. Not faulty cheapo LG displays...

And while we are at it, we should also sue Apple for removing the 32-bit kernel from Mountain lion, so we with 1st gen Mac Pros are basically suck on Lion, even though our machines are perfectly capable of running the latest OS.

The 2009-2011 iMacs

The 2009-2011 iMacs still have grey smudging issues as well. I find it surprising that their hasn't been a mass recall or class action lawsuit. The screen yellowing is also a huge problem. Apple has yet to address the grey smudging. Screen replacements make the issues even worse or the same as they were before.

I should correct that...they have addressed it in the complete hardware re-design of the iMac with proper screen shielding. But you know, screw those 2009-2011 customers, what do they matter? I'm a huge Apple fan too and have been since the LC, but I'll never buy another iMac from them. I'll make a hackintosh before I go through that again.

I have a LG screen on my retina macbook pro since january and the thing is getting worse. I did the retention test the first day and it had no retention at all, but now for example, only by reading this post, if a put a grey background I can clearly see safari's interface and page layout left and right borders.
This laptop cost me 2950€ that are 3.858,6$. This is not so funny at all. And lets see what happens in following months.

I don't have any apple store nearby, so let's see how this ends.

At this point anybody buying a retina MBP that can't deal with the image retention issue is a complete idiot.

If this is the case, then Apple should put this on their website.
"If you're expecting this screen to not have image retension issues, don't buy it!!".

Yet we have endless post here indicating that Apple does address the issue when it is real.

Issue: LG screens have image retension.
Apple's response: Give free replacements to those who bother to come in and complain.

That is hardly addressing the issue. That's a temporary and quite pathetic solution at best. They're still selling the "issue" so no, they haven't addressed the issue.

Many people are reporting that Apple are replacing their faulty LG screens, so I don't get what the issue is.

If you have an LG screen and you're not happy (and I certainly wouldn't be based on that video) take it back and get it replaced.

The thing is, not ALL LG displays are exhibiting IR. I've had mine since mid-Feb, use it maybe 10 hrs/day, and have never seen it - even when doing specific tests for it. Additionally, the display has no color cast, no uneven brightness, and (though not measured) the dynamic range and saturation is as I expected.

Reading dozens of pages of posts on the subject is looks like Apple is replacing the majority of them without question. Sometimes, someone gets another with same problem - Apple replaces it too. There might have been a bad run, but Apple is accommodating customers until they are happy with their machine. Given their behavior, I don't see how this suit will go anywhere. Additionally, there are some reports of Samsung panels needing replacement (though, fewer).

Apple handles this in virtually the same manner as when dead pixels were common. Most cases, they will exchange it - even for a single dead pixel, which is below their threshold for replacement. They would even allow me to (after making the purchase) check the machine in-store, and swap it before I even left with the new machine.

The amount of noise on the rMBP and its "issues" are virtually identical to any other new product from Apple. I've seen it over and over again. Very few people bother to post if they don't have a problem. As someone else mentioned, you have to look at the number sold vs. what's posted to forums (some are repeats across multiple forums, too). The numbers don't add up to a major manufacturing problem.

Mine was build week 46, November.
Display model: LP154WT1-SJA1

(see sig for rMBP info)

You must not have read the entire article. Apple does not acknowledge this as a problem. And will gladly show you the door out.

Apple will show you the door out and you'll follow if your spineless and week and let some schmuck do that too you after spending serious money for anything in the Apple store.

Switched to apple 7 years ago and have heard the same lame statement over and over. The store in are area will NOT show you the way out.

----------

dumb question but what are the chances of getting a Samsung screen with buying a retina macbookp pro?

Though, if your buying at the local store and they bring out the new rMBP run the serial number on apples site and figure out the screen used, I thought that there were certain numbers in the serial number that defined certain components

Is 'ghosting' the same as 'burn-in'? I think not ...

Thank you. Macrumors needs to use proper terminology. Ghosting is quick motion blur from slow pixel response or input lag. Image retention is the problem we see here and it is only worse with neutral grey backgrounds. It'll do it on older IPS screens as well after years of use.

Its only when you are on 100% brightness and on a static screen for a while...it goes away pretty quickly when you go to another website/app.

No. Not true. My ghosting happens ~70% and lasts for hours.

I need to get in on this.

Have there been any reports of full blown image burn-in? I agree the retention is annoying and ill prob replace eventually

Sigh, another stupid lawsuit. Just take the thing back, I'm sure Apple will refund you.

Everyone wants a piece of the Apple pie these days.

Not really.

For the amount of money we spend on these devices we expect them to work better than an old amber screen monitor.

You say take it back. That's fine as long as they don't give you another LG screen again, and that is the lottery you play.

I don't think we are asking for too much, or being OCD as some people say. We just want the fine Apple products they showcase to us.

I write here just to say that apple has censored a thread that i wrote on this forum, to delete the words "legal protocol", when writing about the image retention test that they pass in the genius bar to determine if they have to change the computer or not. What a shame...

In console type:
ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

You will get:
Color LCD
XXXnnnnnnnn

XXX = LP, means you have a LG monitor
XXX = LSN, means you have a Samsung monitor

Thanks for the feedback, sadly mine is a LG display no problems to report here. However i keep my wallpaper changing every minute, and sleep my display every 5 minutes, call me paranoid but i hate repairing my gear.

i personally don't like the LG brand before i got the iPhone i had a LG Chocolate Phone which was faulty from the day i bought it i think i repaired more than 5 five times until i gave it away, and than in 2010 i got the flagship TV and it suffered what looks like liquid screen bleed in both cases LG never helped to fix the problem and blamed me for the problems.

Its a shame how Apple uses a LG display, i have no complaints with Samsung as my parents own a samsung TV and it never had no problems. Now after reading this article its just another dodgy product from a dodgy company.

lol.... same old. same old...

This was a problem, was it not on the 13" ?? I seem to remember this was a known issue before ...

Finally, a law suit I agree with.
It would be great if they had to mark what brand screen and SSD were in the machine on the box. I'd like to know exactly what I' buying when I pay for it, not just taking a random guess.

Then Apple needs to simply issue a software update so that the screensaver comes on all by itself to prevent screen burn in with no way for consumers to override it and burn their screens. After all, the burn-in is completely normal, and the solution is a screen saver.

Why would Apple configure its systems in a manner so that users could burn in the screens? The screen savers are there for a reason, and it is necessary that they be used to prevent the normal burn-in that always happens with every single IPS screen ever made by anybody anywhere in the world.

If the phenomenon is normal, and if a screensaver is the solution, then mandatory screensavers seems like the proper thing for Apple to do to have the best possible User Experience.

Love the sarcasm here - fantastic. +10

Screen savers that the user can't control - the height of absurdity!

I wonder how many millions of people there are that have the LG screen, yet are blissfully unaware of any problems and are completely happy.

It used to typically be referred to as image persistence, so a lot of older articles would come up using that term.

I guess they'll never play online chess on a Mac again:p.
