apple needs samsung but i don't know if samsung needs apple anymore

Yesterday Samsung proved that without Apple innovation, all Samsung has is minor hardware improvements and gimmicky software. So yes, Samsung needs Apple to copy.

Er. No. It's a fault.. if you can show them a fault they repair orfaulti replace.

Given this is a LG fault ultimately it's down to them and I am sure the Apple will be billing LG for the issue.

Nope. Appear to be mostly Angry android users with nothing better to do.

Not a fault (from the horses mouth). Here is apples official stance.

All a genius needs to do is point you to this site and leave. You were treated fairly and that is great. This isn't everyone's experience.

----------

I call BS.

Show us a single case where Apple refused to replace a defective screen that was still under warranty?

Because according to their official stance it isn't defective. Did you read the class action?

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5455

It seems that the answer must be "yes". But you can find out for sure by reading the complaint.

You would think so, but the mere presence of the lawsuit does not guarantee that. A quote in the article from the complaint also makes the incorrect assumption that all LG panels are defective, when we even have a case here of a user having an LG panel that does not have the problem.

Also, image persistence in IPS panels is a real thing - it's just the length of time in the defective panels is much too short. That's the problem. Apple's support article, though sounds relevant, is clearly intended for all displays and not to minimize this issue. Although I'm sure some Apple support staff erroneously led customers to this when told about this issue.

All those class action lawsuits in the US, do people have no life there? Can't they entertain themselves without lawyers? Seriously, if it's that big of a deal, return the god damn laptop. And if you're not within the return window because you didn't notice it until someone else pointed it out to you, it can't really be such a big issue. In 2000, laptops' displays had such a low resolution, crappy colors, saturation, and whatnot, it was a real strain on your eyes. Let's sue all display manufacturers for the pain we'd to endure.

A class action lawsuit is one in which an individual or small number of people file a claim representing a larger group of individuals in similar circumstances.
And almost always and exclusively benefits the lawyers disproportionately.

BTW Apple clearly states in its online advertising that any particular unit varies in mass and component selection based on vendor access from time to time.

This case needs to get the lawyers out of the loop entirely. This case needs a Motion in Limine, a method to discern LG from Samsung displays, and a way for consumers without lawyers who care enough to be concerned to simply switch displays. The removed displays can be put on other MacBook Pros (or exchanged), for sale with the factor overtly disclosed, so the follow-on buyer has affirmative notice for perhaps a $100 reduction from retail. Or the original owner could be offered a $100 cash refund.

A lawsuit I finally agree with!

I don't have a rMBP, but if I were to buy one and end up with an LG display, I'd exchange it. But then I might end up with another LG display. It's clearly a defect, and isn't acceptable on a machine where the selling point is the display.

Unfortunately Apple supply chain demand means Apple has to use the crappy LG display.
I agree wholeheartedly.

What is even more disturbing is that iPads went through basically the same thing. While the iPad 3 still had most of the screens coming from Samsung, which have breathtaking image quality and a bare minimum of visible IPS-like negative side-effects (which are to be expected, even on professional IPS displays) they have been using LG screens that seem to have been of way lower quality than the Samsung ones.

It is extremely misleading to sell a product with such high amounts of variation, especially if you market them because of that very same reason, the "amazing" Retina display.

I hope Apple responds to this in the way of making sure that their products are perfect and not only "good enough" in the future. I want an Apple product that sets the same high standards Apple set themselves making them and no less.

I don't see much chance for this lawsuit to succeed. For this, it must prove that LG-made panels are inherently inferior to Samsung-made ones and that majority LG panels suffer from the ghosting issue. I don't see how this can be done without having access to Apple repair order databases.

BTW, to those who claim that Apple does not acknowledge the issue - Apple has a standard test for image retention and will replace any defective screen which fails the test if the computer is still within the warranty period. If your laptop is suffering from bad retention, jut call them and they will do the rest for you.

Ah, US malpractice lawsuits are so sad. Get the screen replaced, end of story. People are just ambulance chasers.

Is macrumors run by apple?
Seems no matter what apple is always considered good by 90% of posters here.

Actually, the comments here are fairly well balanced. Read AppleInsider if you want to see ranting fanbois. They excoriate people who merely intimate that maybe Apple made some sort of a tiny boo-boo.

I wonder how many people commenting about the IR issue even have (or have had) a rMBP? I think the whole lawsuit will ultimately hinge around what is a meaningful defect. http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/defective-product.html has an interesting definition:

"Consumable, commercially produced and distributed good that is (1) unfit for its intended use, (2) dangerous or harmful for normal use, (3) does not carry adequate instructions for its use, or (4) is inherently dangerous due to defective design, assembly, or manufacture. See also defect."

If this is the definition the court system will use, I tend to think that the plaintiffs will not win. Especially with AppleCare in play.

I'd be mighty pissed as well.

Just recently I stored my iMac back in its box and left it in my apartment room for about a year (or more). Just recently I decided to get it out and try it (for nostalgia) and was SHOCKED to find the LCD screen absolutely STUFFED. There was HORRIBLE vignetting on the screen, starting from the edges going inward -- seems permanent too!!

Awesome......finally. I wanted a rmbp for awhile but kept seeing these IR problems on every display I checked out. Seems like a legitimate law suit to potentially get a better response in the future.

Sigh, another stupid lawsuit. Just take the thing back, I'm sure Apple will refund you.

Everyone wants a piece of the Apple pie these days.

Or replace the display. It isn't like they are trying to fix the issue. These folks are just pissy because they don't want to deal with it out of laziness.

Apple isn't perfect, get that of your head right now. It's a first year product and there will be issues, but that's what warranties are for. And I'd venture that 90% of those threads are replies and rants not actual reports of issues by folks that took it to Apple and were refused assistance of any kind. Unlike me you took back a retina with display issues (small dead pixel area) was swapped for it and they even did a data transfer over to the new one to save me 6 hours of doing it at home off my FireWire back up drive. I had the new one in like an hour.

Legally, Apple should indicate externally what brand panel is used so customer's are informed. Its morally wrong to hide this information on the basis they are all identical - picture says a thousand words. Apple should only use Samsung for displays as they are better and don't have the yellow tinge that all LG panels seem to have. Im surprised Apple still buy from LG, considering this issue, and the same issue on the iMac's. Only Samsung should be used, and anyone that has an LG display should get it swapped for a Samsung model instantly - no questions asked.

LG--Yellow Tinge? Not sure where you came up with that. LG actually has amazing color, excellent contrast...and in some ways bests the Sammy displays. Unfortunately, the bulk have the IR issue which sucks. My first rMBP had an LG screen--it wasn't far off from perfect calibration out of the box...and took 4 months for me to see the IR. I took it in and in 24 hours had a Sammy display. LG is one of the world's largest panel manufacturers. They've obviously got challenges with their IPS displays (and IR). However, other attributes are excellent!

Perhaps you missed this. Unless you are within the 30 days, you are sol.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5455

Apparently I missed this too. Apple has been exceptional taking those defective panels in and replacing them with Samsung displays. It would be nice if ONE person with an LG display (with IR) would chime in that wasn't able to have theirs replaced with a Samsung, regardless of time since purchase. Again, mine was over 4 months old and they didn't bat an eye.

That is a hit or miss, dude. And not all countries have Apple Stores, or such stores nearby.

But all countries have access to 1-800-MyApple, right?

...

Apple clearly sells a LG retina screen that is inferior to the Samsung retina one, and there shouldn't be such a quality difference in the product for you as buyer. Apple should just drop LG, and yes, face the problem that they cannot meet production demand for the retina MacBook Pro then, if that happens. But of course they don't. They are as silent as ever, hoping no one will step up and make noise. As all companies do.

"As all companies do"? Apple is hands down one of the absolute best companies in the world for post purchase support. I was pissed when the IR reared it's ugly head on my rMBP...but again, NO issues having it taken care of. Perhaps Apple HAS been working with LG behind the scenes to get to the bottom of this issue? LG Retina display are extremely good---other than this image persistence problem. It would be nice if they could get a hold of this challenge, as the other display factors are very positive. Color gamut, contrast, brightness, et al.

MR is an Apple fan site. However, it seems you're bad at math---as I don't see anyone defending Apple when it comes to this problem. There are folks, albeit rare...that own an LG display rMBP and don't have the IR problem. Any site devoted specifically to a 'brand' will inherently attract folks that are proud owners, devotees if you will. No different here @ MR. However, in the past couple of years (since iPhone and iPads)...it seems there has been an exponential rise in folks that are fans of 'other' brands that like to piss in our Cheerios. Those are the folks that really ought to find a site that pertains to their passion---My Humble Opinion

I have a LG panel in my 15" rMBP & I am running 100% flawless... How come?

Because the issue isn't likely an LG v Samsung one but rather certain batches perhaps at both of them that had some kind of fault. Or the displays were fine until they were mishandled during assembly. Or some other such

I had my samsung lcd replaced for a barely noticeable dark spot in the display. No questions asked.

You must not have read the entire article. Apple does not acknowledge this as a problem. And will gladly show you the door out.

No they won't. They will make good on the issue. Once they test and determine what it is. The trouble is that for at least some it could be software or another such and these folks don't accept that answer and go in hot, expecting a brand new white box machine etc. and it better be verified not to have an LG screen cause they read in some rumor site etc that that's the problem.

All our purchase of iMacs 27 and Apple Cinema display have been returned for screens issue too.. Yellow and uniformity issue. Even back in 2010.
LG make lousy display. period.
The funny part is Apple continue pushing those troublesome panel at us.

Sigh, another forum post with no basis in fact, just (incorrect) assumptions.

No, its definitely an issue with the LG screens only. The Samsung and LG screens actually use slightly different technology (Samsung: PLS, LG: IPS). The LG is actually a slightly better screen than the Samsung as long as it doesn't have the image retention issue obviously.
