Actually, that's pretty much useless information. Hundreds from multiple shops out of tens of millions of phones? These kind of anecdotes provide absolutely no way of determining the actual prevalence of these failures or, even more importantly, why some experience it and many other do not. Only Apple could possibly know for sure, and quite possibly they don't know themselves yet.

I have no doubt that a person can break their iPhone. Maybe this is even an easier way to break one than others, or easier than it "should" be. Again, only Apple really knows. Right now all we have is speculation, and speculation does not become a fact just by repetition.

AppleInsider contact Apple Geniuses from multiple different Apple Store. From their experiences, the problem is very prevalent. Of cause there is no way to know for sure since Apple would never release (or perhaps might not even know) the true number this is affected.

Class action suits are a major nuisance for a company because they generate bad publicity whether they have merit or not. For that reason alone I'd expect Apple to quietly issue an out-of-warranty repair/replacement policy directive. Maybe they need to understand what is going on better before they decide how to handle it.

One thing that causes me to suspect handling is an issue is the number of people who report having multiple similar failures, and of course lots of us have owned these phones for a couple of years now without ever seeing it.

Too late to "quietly issue an out-of-warranty repair/replacement policy directive" when the flaw has been reported all over the news.

Bloody tightwads. The amount of money they make and charge for their products, service and support should be the #1 focus for the company. Certainly, before coming into the Apple eco system I presumed this to be the case. Long since have I realised they are no different to any budget oriented brand.

I'm not the one claiming it. It has been proven that the problem is due to the lead-free solder used. That all of those motherboards are susceptible. You are free to not believe that and believe what Apple says.

Lead-free solder is not exclusive to Apple for mobile electronics, and neither is BGA, so there's not much reason to doubt Apple's statement regarding the percentage. Can it fail? Yes. Is it guaranteed to fail? No. Anything beyond that is pretty speculative considering how common lead-free solder and BGA are within the electronics industry.

Again anecdotes aren't proof and they only barely pass as evidence. Supposedly "everybody" had problems with the iPhone 4 antenna but it didn't seem to affect everyone. Just the same Apple made those free bumper cases available and suddenly nobody had a problem with it anymore. More or less the same thing with "Bendgate." So no it isn't too late for Apple to tamp down a PR problem with a more generous return/exchange policy, which is exactly what they will do if they believe the issue is widespread enough for it to not blow over on its own.

Apple is not Apple any longer R.I.P.
LoL, what?

Daughter cracked her 6+ screen, had it replaced and a few months later the "touch disease" happened to the screen..... took it in and apple replaced the phone. This was months ago.... I just thought they were being "nice" but obviously they had an issue they knew about but didn't say anything. The guy (genius) even said "they" suggest replacing the phone.

Has anyone successfully gotten a replacement for this problem, when out of warranty?
Yes they replaced my daughters phone out of warranty.

*I lost a lot of respect for iFixit on this video; I see marketing, not science.
LoL they are a company not a think tank.... there job is to fix broken phones so of course they are "marketing" themselves..... ffs what else would they do?

My mom's iPhone 6 has been presenting these same symptoms for a couple months now. I feel bad because I thought it was all in her head. Looks like I'll be sending her some apology flowers here this morning.
Make sure you include the cost of he flowers when you join the lawsuit

Well my friend if Apple treated every customer like you I guess there would be no need for a class action. All they would have to say is bring your phone in or mail it in and we will replace it with a new one.

....and it begins. This will go over well with the EU Ruling. I'd sell today if possible. ;)

This. Despite the profits and other factors, to me, this just starts showing the cracks in Tim's armor. Unless they come through with a dynamite keynote (which has been years, especially with all the 'pipeline' talk), to me it will show that the corporate guidance has truly lost its way. It may not be time for a total shakeout, but perhaps a visit to the woodshed....Apple needs to raise the bar again, not fail jumping over it....

I wondered what was wrong with my 6 Plus. Doesn't happen very often, and so far I've been able to fix it easily, but it is going to kill any resale value I might have had.

Good. When you spend $1000 on a phone, it should last more than 1 year and 10 months.

Unless your out of the US, you might want to go get some of your money back from the crook that sold you your iPhone. The most expensive iPhone is $850.

People don't care enough though for it to change, only 20 odd comments on this story, yet here we are again with Apple being sued for design flaws they charged customers to fix. This is a repeat and common occurrence with Apple that has happened multiple times.

Could you provide us a list of the other design flaws that Apple has deemed not to fix?

My 6S Plus was so troublesome I sold it for $200 on CL and booted my trusty old Note 5 back up. Do NOT miss the iPhone (any iPhone for that matter), having zero issues using my Macs and an Android together.

Don't understand what people are up in arms about or how this lawsuit could ever move forward.

Companies give warranties on their devices. A warranty is: "a written guarantee, issued to the purchaser of an article by its manufacturer, promising to repair or replace it if necessary within a specified period of time." After that warranty is expired, it's expired.

I could see suing if something went wrong during warranty and the company refused to fix it. You KNEW the warranty was one year when you bought the phone. That means Apple will fix the phone if it breaks due to a manufacturing defect for ONE YEAR. In fact the text of the warranty is:

"Apple Inc. of One Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California, U.S.A. 95014 (“Apple”) warrants the Apple-branded iPhone, iPad, iPod or Apple TV hardware product and the Apple-branded accessories contained in the original packaging (“Apple Product”) against defects in materials and workmanship when used normally in accordance with Apple's published guidelines for a period of ONE (1) YEAR from the date of original retail purchase by the end-user purchaser ("Warranty Period")."

If you don't want to buy a product with only a one-year warranty, don't buy it. But if you do choose to buy, don't bitch and moan if it breaks after the time that the manufacturer no longer guarantees it to be free from defects in materials or workmanship.

Before this did these people get *new* phones free ? or did Apple give them the run-around ?

because that actually makes all the difference, weather this is good or bad.

I've gotten a free replacement charger for my MBP, but I had to withstand the childish comments from the Apple employee helping me. Telling me not to twist the magnetic end. I'd rather pay for a replacement than go through that again.

And I hope they finally address it - and cover any future problems some may have. I have the 6+ and I decided I will not upgrade to the 7+ in a few weeks. So I need this phone to last another 13 months.

I rather wait until next year for the - expected - new design.

If I say, "Three of my friends have this problem", then that's an anecdotal evidence.

Multiple accounts from different Apple Geniuses working at different Apple Stores is not anecdotal evidence.

You can bury your head in the sand all you want.

Cool, I thought my fingers may have been a little greasy. My screen is spotless, I've cleaned it so many times.
[doublepost=1472525442][/doublepost]Ahh, back in the day, Miscrosoft being sued for anything and everything, now, not so much, thanks Apple :)

Nope. The most expensive is $949.

Yes. Apple didn't fix the GPU issue in the MacBook Pro until after a class action lawsuit.

People are up in arms because Apple sold them lemons (not fit for purpose).

Apple tell them to pay $329 for a refurbished (that would likely develop the same issue).

I don't want a 7+, but I have little faith that my 6+ will last another year. One more thing to think about: stay on the S cycle. The S cycle is where the hardware bugs are fixed. No matter how good the iPhone 8 appears, I would still wait for the 8S.
