There is not going to be a 5.5" iPhone this year, let's face it. There would have been part leaks already if one were pending.

Changing from gorilla glass on the 6 to sapphire on the 6s isn't a redesign. Was adding the fingerprint sensor a redesign?

Ok maybe it's not a redesign but I still don't think Apple would intentionally delay a sapphire screen to next year. We know the phone is getting redesigned this year, it would only make sense to include a new screen at that time.

This comment is just comedy. The limits of this ilk were pushed quite some time ago by several other manufacturers. Just keep it real.

What ilk? What other manufacturers are shipping phones in large quantities with sapphire displays?

4.7 is a perfect size for the iPhone, anything more would be silly.

This sort of nonsense has been shouted for years. Before the 5, 3.5 was the perfect size. Before the leaks for the 6 were begun earnestly, 4 was the perfect size. I personally would love to see a 5.5 iPhone, but if Apple elects not to, that's fine. I won't grumble or threaten to not buy their products anymore, but I also won't try to convince myself that I prefer it when I don't. I'll simply buy something else, probably a Z30 given how pleased I've been with BB10 on my work mobile. The TouchID, Continuity features, and the ecosystem just aren't enough for me to put up with decreased real estate.

The 5.5" iPhone will debut alongside the Apple television set that's been "delayed" since 2011. And, the iWatch for that matter. Until I see parts (not mockups!) I don't believe it. How quickly we all forgot the "tapered iPhone 5" when the 4s came out.

If this happens it's game over for Apple in the smartphone market. Apple is already dying a slow death in this market; this will just about put the nail in the coffin.
I think this a bit strong. There's no denying that there is a tremendous market for an iPhone, but the reality is that it has become your mom and dad's phone, your grandparents phone.

Apple may not be on the ropes financially, but this is an important release to try to gain back a significant number of defectors and prevent themselves from losing more loyalists. Is iPhone dying a slow death? No. However, the lack of innovation has driven off many. If this keeps up, then yeah, eventually Apple will end up in the cellar.

I swear to god this MacRumors "production delay" story has come up for EVERY single Apple product released for years.

I came here to say this, this rumor is posted every single year, and every single year the iPhone is released in September.

I know every product faces yield issues and screen issues at some point in production, but how is it the 4.7 would face less than the 5.5? Why doesn't samsung have these problems? Different display tech? Why doesn't apple use the type Samsung uses if that is the case?

Are you new to Apple rumours?

First off, Apple always pushes the limits of industrial design. That's one of their signature trademarks. Secondly, they don't just use tech that other companies use for the sake of selling a product. It has to be the best decision that they can make for their customers.

The Z30's display is actually quite a bit smaller than the mythical 5.5 inch iPhone, and much closer to the size of the 4.7" iPhone display.

Display Areas in square inches.

Z30: 10.7
iPhone 4.7": 9.5
iPhone 5.5": 12.9

If you can just hold out another 5 months, we can make this 10% thinner design function properly... That will also allow the market to produce a sufficient number of cases so you will never have to notice that thin design outside of your first day of ownership.

Oh ya..Major major techincal challenges involved in making the 5.5 compared to 4.7......

Well that's a bummer. I just played with a 5.5" phone yesterday. Put it in my pocket. It was amazing. Can't wait for the 5.5" iPhone. Just hope I don't have to wait too long.

It's the ol' "you're probably not going to get what you want so go ahead and pick another brand" type of FUD* that other manufacturers spread (or pay to have spread) EVERY SINGLE TIME Apple is about to announce something.

*Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt

...66% of the smartphone market this year has been phones under 5.5 inches....Even people who are buying other OS' favour the 4.7 size and under...

I appreciate an empirical approach to the issue, but I think you should revisit your stats. Of the smartphone market, what portion is iPhone, all of which are under 5.5"? You should analyze the percent of NON-iPhone smartphone purchases that are under 5.5". Only then do you see what people are buying when they have the choice of sizes.

Booooo. I wish somebody would get their **** together already... heads need to roll.

Really? Do you have a role in Apple's production process? Why doesn't everybody just go get a real life and not worry about Apple, Ford or Panasonic until the products you are looking for hit the shelves?

Wait, whens the quarterly due. Oh right, I'm waiting for more stock depressing stories.

Apple may not be on the ropes financially? Er, that's the understatement of the year.

I wonder why HTC and Samsung don't face any of these kind of issues. New products are being released every year with multiple screen sizes.
Because when you make products by copying you have loads of time to work on other things. When you innovate it takes time and you're not left with much time to work on other aspects.

lol :p

I can feel the flames on my back :D

It's not really an error in my stats, it's a lack of data on what you're asking about. If you can find data that excludes iOS but includes all other smartphone manufacturers *and* shows the amount by size, be my guest ;)
