True, but a brand new screen out of sapphire seems to me like a big redesign. I suppose it could get pushed to 2015 if there are manufacturing issues but I don't think Apple would intentionally keep it for the 'S' series phone. Apple is going to want something besides a larger screen to crow about this fall.

Sapphire screen is more of a component change. No one will know the difference. It won't be discernible by look, touch, or any other measurable that consumers could use. It could easily be an S iterative upgrade.

Something else to crow about? Even if Apple had nothing else to show besides what they already have planned, they have proven to be the masters of making the mundane seem magnificent. I'm sure they will be up to the task this fall.

If this happens it's game over for Apple in the smartphone market. Apple is already dying a slow death in this market; this will just about put the nail in the coffin.
Congratulations on being the most quoted in this forum. This is not a compliment.

Stupider things have been posted recently but painting Apple as dying a slow death when they are dominating in the states and growing abroad is by far the biggest blanket of ****. As for a nail in the coffin...what coffin? Are you even in the right forum?

I know you want your big phone a many millions more do too but more people want the current size followed by the 4.7". We know this as fact. Apple is still on the position to dictate where the market goes as evidenced by the popularity of their size vs. phablet sizes which are but a small fraction of smartphone sales. Stop deluding yourself into thinking that you are part of a huge customer base that Apple needs. They're only considering 5.5" because of China and India where many customers can afford only one device so they pick the biggest phone as it's the most useful for most of their needs.

did anyone think this would ship this year?

its shipping in May to further take the air out for Samsung's next flagship

I know every product faces yield issues and screen issues at some point in production, but how is it the 4.7 would face less than the 5.5? Why doesn't samsung have these problems? Different display tech? Why doesn't apple use the type Samsung uses if that is the case?
Apple ships more phones at once than anyone including Samsung even comes close. Samsung delivers millions of devices over months. Apple delivers millions in a day.

No comparison.

I don't know where you have these numbers from, but for sure we will never know what Samsung sells, they only publish shipping quotes while Apple really sells, and publishes these numbers...:D

There is not going to be a 5.5" iPhone this year, let's face it. There would have been part leaks already if one were pending.
Comments like this crack me up, and there have been plenty in this thread. The only parts "leaked" so far have all been dummies and mock ups. Both of the 4.7 and 5.5.
The only part that maybe, MAYBE legit is the display screen. Yes, it's 4.7, but so what? It in no way means "There is not going to be a 5.5" phone released this year."
It seems like the only people declaring that there absolutely will not be a 5.5" phone, are the people who have something against that particular size phone, for whatever reason.
No one knows for sure except apple.
I myself, remain hopeful for a 5.5" phone.

we go from issues to no issues to issues again. Let's just wait until the announcement before reacting at this point.

But if we just waited for announcements then this website wouldn't exist!:D

We are leak spoiled. "If there aren't multiple part leaks and we don't know exactly what it would look like, then it doesn't exist." Just like the Mac Pro. ;)

I don't mind because I have 5c and happy. Oh and I promised AT&T I stay with it or they will take my money.

If you can just hold out another 5 months, we can make this 10% thinner design function properly... That will also allow the market to produce a sufficient number of cases so you will never have to notice that thin design outside of your first day of ownership.

Yep. Stubbornly and persistently shooting for thinnest/lightest bragging rights, when it compromises yield rates, camera size, and battery life, certainly seems like a classic case of putting the cart before the horse hey.

Because when you make products by copying you have loads of time to work on other things. When you innovate it takes time and you're not left with much time to work on other aspects.

lol :p

I can feel the flames on my back :D

You could be right. That would be a very good reason.

They are usually not expected to ship tens of millions of the same product per quarter

Isn't quantity not the issue though? The article states that Apple has issues in terms of engineering the larger iPhone 6 model.

You are making an assumption that in-cell technology is inferior. Developing new manufacturing processes are essential to advancement of new technologies. Do you think Samsung had high yields on its display tech right away?

You also assume in-cell is superior, just because Apple is using it...

Actually that is incorrect Samsung sells a lot more phones than Apple.

These analysts have to say something every few days to keep their name in the news. Their accuracy rate is so low, who would ever know if they just started making stuff up? Remember what Tim said about judging Apple's production schedule based on one or two suppliers.

Are you new to Apple rumours?

First off, Apple always pushes the limits of industrial design. That's one of their signature trademarks. Secondly, they don't just use tech that other companies use for the sake of selling a product. It has to be the best decision that they can make for their customers.

Have you seen Samsung phone screens? I like my iPhone n all, but Samsung by no means is lacking in the display area seriously, go look at an S5 or S4, whatever Samsung uses it delivers screen wise.

Off note:
I have been on MacRumors 5 years and let me tell you the fanboyism has gotten significantly worse since I first started here.

Booooo. I wish somebody would get their **** together already... heads need to roll.

Johnny is bald.. And polished up nicely.

I think they're waiting for the new Super-dark black just discovered.

This is why it's silly to wait in line on release day... Apple almost always has some gotcha that's shell-rattling right out of the gate. Then they get it straightened out about January.

The Z30's display is actually quite a bit smaller than the mythical 5.5 inch iPhone, and much closer to the size of the 4.7" iPhone display.

Display Areas in square inches.

Z30: 10.7
iPhone 4.7": 9.5
iPhone 5.5": 12.9

That's nearly an extra 13% display- and workspace. It might not seem like much to some, but for someone that regularly edits documents on their phone because of time sensitivity, every little bit helps.

Let me see if I understand. Are you telling me Samsung, HTC, and LG have mastered the larger screen phones and Apple is having difficulty? Baloney!

Apple doesn't make displays, they buy them from other companies and since Apple is trying its hardest to use the least amount of Samsung parts, Apple is stuck with companies that have trouble making good displays.
