I could swear there was an article on here some time ago that said that in Brazil apple does include chargers.
Are you sure you aren't confusing the iPhone charger with...

"The inclusion of earphones there is due to national legislation that requires all smartphones to include a "handsfree kit" to protect children under 14 from the potential risk of electromagnetic radio waves."

Leaving aside if we’re in favor or against the move of removing chargers, I think we can all agree that this fine is the same thing as doing nothing.

Just because the fine is small (re: Apple wealth) that isn't the same thing as nothing being done. A statement has been made, it just may not be as loud of one as some here would have liked.

At this point, Apple is appealing and we will have to wait for the outcome.

If it’s indeed against brazilian law, wouldn’t you agree the answer is bellow tepid?

I laud Apple’s desire to protect the environment. Making the iPhone box smaller is a good thing, and reducing unused charger bricks is a good thing. BUT if the environment were all that they were concerned about, then they can ask customers when buying an iPhone IF they want a charger, and include a charger in a smaller separate box for free, thus reducing the shipping volume all the same. It’s charging for the charger many will need that’s unacceptable, and I’m glad Brazil’s held them to account for that.
Great idea. They should give out the 5 watt chargers though.

As I've said before to others, if chargers are as completely necessary as stated. And that Apples motives are entirely self motivated greed which they disguise behind environmentalism. Then, again, as critically necessary items that otherwise will entirely screw over the customer to otherwise not be included:

I'd like everyone else to not only just have the backbone and <Phil Schiller voice> courage </> to continue to include it in box. But, as champions of competition and choice and freedom of choice, to publicly rebuke Apple on this. No memes. No laughs or lolz. Just, that's not how we think and we promise to you, you'll always have a charger. Kudos to the company that says, we're just going to make you (apple) regret ever excluding the charger.
Just include the 5 watt chargers and be done with it.

Good, they should fine them even more for being so greedy.
I have bought several things that come with cable but no adapter. What about them? Even Apple Watch does not come with adapter. Only cable. I have bought some kids toys that need charger and they come with cable only.

Once again, this is great news. I’m glad some countries are at least realizing what a dumb move this is fuelled entirely by financial motivation and nothing to do with environmental impact.

They changed the charger the same time they got rid of it from the box. Tell me more about how we’re supposed to use our existing USBC bricks that we got with our iPhone….?

They sell charger bricks separately in a ton of packaging and at exorbitant prices and they just got called out for it.

Bravo, next country now please.
So sad that people think its the governments job to tell companies what to sell and people what they have to buy. Because apparently we arent smart enough to make purchasing decisions on our own. Is there any aspect of life then that you think the government should not be in control of? I guess ill need them to tell me when to eat and poop, since those are harder decisions than me deciding if i want to buy a phone charger or not.

Apple has been slapped with a near $2 million fine in the Brazilian state of São Paulo over violations of the Consumer Law Code due to the lack of a charger in the box for newer iPhones, Brazilian tech news outlet Tilt reports.

Procon-SP, São Paulo's consumer protection agency, decided to fine Apple following intense scrutiny over the decision to remove the power adapter from the boxes of iPhones. With the iPhone 12, Apple removed the power adapter from the box, saying that doing so will reduce carbon emissions and the use of rare-earth metals.

In December, the Brazilian agency informed Apple that selling an iPhone in the country without a charger in the box is a violation of the Consumer Defense Code. Apple responded to the agency's concerns by saying that most customers already have spare adapters and that providing another one in the box is unneeded.

Fernando Capez, Procon-SP's executive director, offered a stern warning to Apple following the fine, saying that it needs to respect and understand Brazilian consumer law and institutions. Alongside the lack of a charger, Apple is also being fined for misleading customers about the water resistance in iPhones.

Since the iPhone 7, iPhones have been water-resistant to different specifications. The more recent iPhone 12 series, for example, is certified for water submersion of up to 6 meters for as long as 30 minutes.

Procon-SP claims that Apple refused to repair devices for customers who had suffered water damage with their "water-resistant" iPhones, even though they're under warranty. Other charges brought forward to Apple are claims that it deliberately slows down older phones with iOS updates to encourage customers to purchase newer models.

Apple will have a chance to appeal to the $2 million fine. We've reached out to Apple for comment and will update this article if we hear back.

I went and bought a Microwave this morning from Home Depot. It came with a power cord and a way to power it. The same can't be said for the iPhone 12 Pro I bought at Verizon last week. A device that requires something to power it should be required to come with a power cord/charger. Instead, Apple sells a charger and brick for $19, and a hockey puck charger for $40.

Apple is simply blowing smoke up our asses with this whole "environmental" thing. They want to reduce the box size because smaller boxes are cheaper. Smaller boxes are lighter to ship, saving money. Leaving the power cord and brick out saves cost for Apple. It is simply another way for Cook to cut corners to make the company's revenue look better than it really is.

Cook needs to fire his legal team and start fresh, but he doesn't have the raisins to do so. You hire a legal team to make sure as a global company, all laws are followed in all other countries you do business in... Not sit there and argue with the laws in those countries. If Brazil says you need to include power cords and a charging brick with the phone... You comply with it... Not sit there and go "Well, yada yada yada yada, that sucks for you."

Brazil has less of an argument about water resistance because Apple's T&C's state water damage isn't covered. With that said, my opinion is this: If your water resistance is as good as you say it is, put your money where your mouth is, Apple by covering water damage. Apple should be responsible if their water resistance features fail.

Apple’s claim of doing this with the environment in mind would have made more sense if they had made all iPhones 12 USB-C and not included any type of cable at all, forcing consumers to reuse cables from other USB-C products.

Then only the ones who don’t have any USB-C cables and chargers would have been forced to buy more cables and chargers.

I would agree on the water resistance aspect if the iPhone seals didn't degrade over time. At this point, it would be foolish for Apple to warranty water damage.

You didn't reply to me, but really? I guarantee every country has at least several laws you'll think are "ridiculous." I think speed limit laws are stupid too... And I complain about them, but I realize they must be followed to a certain degree.

Agreed, the parts do wear down after a while. Problem is, Apple Care doesn't cover water damage, even from day #1. They could cover water damage for a year or two while the parts are relatively new. Apple is too afraid their water resistance features will cost them too much money because some phones will be defective.

Honest question.... as a consumer, do you consider yourself smart enough to choose which smart phone you wish to buy, and whether its cost is worth it to you.. but you are incapable of knowing if you need a charger or not and purchasing one from any of the thousands of places you can get one? You need the government to step in and do thst for you as you are not grown up enough? Shall the government make your lunch for you as well... maybe do your laundry?

I guess i just come from a different era, where people were capable of doing things for themselves.

For everyone saying that Apple should add the charger for free, it’s worth noting, again, that you can buy both headphones and a charger, and still be a bit better off compared to having paid for them when they were in the box. Apple left things out, but lowered the price.

This wouldn’t be an issue if Apple would A) Use USB-C on iPhones and B) Add a checkbox to the checkout process that lets you add the charger for free...kind of like Xiaomi.

How long before MacBooks and iPads no longer include a charger? Or the HomePod, or the Apple TV? Because environment.

Your idea would also work without USB-C.

Fact is: You can charge the new iPhone with any old USB-A charger with a lightning cable. So either the charger from your old iPhone, or from your old Android phone with a cheap cable, or any USB hub supplying power.

Fact 2 is: You can charge the new iPhone with any old USB-C charger and the supplied cable, for example your old Android phone, or any USB-Charger with a USB-C port.

Only people who cannot charge are those with their very first phone.
