I'd buy a 15" MBP with Air form factor the minute it became available.

My 13" Air is my favorite Mac ever. I'll buy these things as long as Apple makes them.

I'll always have a Mac Pro for really heavy work anyway.

You are so very wrong

You are so right...

If only there were external accessories you could plugin that would give you full and complete access to a CD drive for the few times you needed it...And it would have made Apple far less dictatorial if they offered one of these as an add-on while you were buying a product.

And you know what would be really sweet? If Apple spent money and time developing a technology that allowed your laptop to piggyback off the Drive in another computer in your vicinity...

If only all these things were true, then Apple wouldn't be the dictatorship they are.

You are so uninformed! Apple does sell a very attractive, external, USB powered Superdrive, and quite inexpensively, too! It is styled to totally complement the Macbook Air.

As to your second point, that too is not true. Apple allows you very easily to share any peripheral or drive wirelessly. In fact, Apple, more than any other computer maker, is making wireless computing practical.

So, I guess, by your own admission, then, Apple is not a 'dictatorship'. :D

LOL I couldn't believe reading the post (cant remember the name of user) that choice is bad. Surreal. I dont care what Apple does now, I am good and set in both major OS's. I am bracing for the mac to be more niche over time. Kind of is to a degree now. I also wonder just how bad some peoples windows experiences were? Its as if the machine literally wouldn't even turn on and just get viruses and malware from being off. I had very few issues besides Windows ME.

Choice is bad. Uncle Steve said so. OSX is a good operating system as is Windows, especially Windows 7. I still have an old desktop that's running Windows XP problem free. It's not that hard. I think that many of the Mac converts had no technical ability at all, and with Windows you need some type of anti-malware protection and they just couldn't overcome something that simple.

Maybe they think Steve is sexy??? LOL ewwww.

I give OSX the overall edge, unless you game obviously. I care less for PC gaming.

Hell I run Macscan and clamXAV on my mac just incase. Rarely, but never can be too careful.

lol you don't catch sarcasm very well

I converted for the shallow reason that Macbook Pro's look stunning =)

audiophile?

except that I'm one of those "antiquated" audiophiles who won't settle for buying music in a lossy format (and without a physical booklet accompanying it) and will continue to buy all of my music on CD/movies on DVD until either of these formats have been completely phased out.

Sorry Mr. Audiophile, but CD isn't lossless. It's 44khz 16-bit compressed digital squared-wave crap. You can get much better from the web.

iTunes is set to start selling 24/96 very soon. Do you think anyone is bringing DVD-Audio or HDCD back from the dead?

Anyone think that if Steve went blind then Macs would lose the screens on laptops? What about fingers? LOL

I don't know why computer companies don't do this. But if they put a small flash memory of like...4-8GB they can put the whole opperating system on it, to boot from. As well as still have your conventional hard drive.

This would give you SSD performance for a fraction of the price. If set up correctly, it can be used to hold any programs and applications installed on the computer aka the applications folder. Or not for security.

Either way, this will take up little room and increase boot speeds and over all performance.

Because NAND flash memory wasn't reliable/performant/durable enough until recent years. They are now, and hybrid drives are coming.

512GB hybrid SSDs standard for 2012 MBPs anyone? I think 1TB is possible.

But, for the love of God, keep the DVD drive.

If he did do that I'm sure there would be a lot of people here saying that we are in the post screen era and didn't need them anymore. There are an awful lot of people who defend Apple no matter what. It's kind of frightening to see that a for profit corporation has this type of control over it's customers and what's even more frightening is the people who like being controlled.

I agree. So what you don't need a DVD drive, some people might need and have to use a DVD drive. Not all vendors offer purchasable downloads globally, some are limited to certain countries and not everyone has a 5 mb/s+ connection (which I think is sufficient for software).

I still believe this will be a 15" AIR not a Pro.

It's a been a month since I've used the drive but when you need it, you don't have to plug-in an external just insert the disc and away you go...

It would be nice if they had at least one model with the optical drive for those who wanted one. I know that tech evolves, but were not quite at the end of life for optical media.

wish it would be

I guess this one will have no FireWire and no Ethernet.. this is supplied by Thunderbolt Display over TB and I see this as an ideal solution. No necessary thickness and weight on the go, just plug-it in at home and you'll turn your 15" MacBook Pro Air into regular desktop Mac. Oh, and no SuperDrive built in, just a laaarge battery ;) for 7-10h of wireless web.
Also i believe they will integrate discreet graphics in it to make it able to drive two Thunderbolt Displays in extended desktop mode and to do heavy stuff.
Last but not least, I think this can handle quad core i7 at lower freqs, with some decent Turbo Boost enabled when magsafe powered.

Make it real :apple: ..looking forward to my next Mac :)

I agree with the sentiment that this will be a 15" Air though also believe that the next revisions of the MBP and iMac will kill the optical drive.

Yeah...I suppose. Not now I think. Still to early as mentioned above. Probably in 2013.

I can't deny that my experiences with the Mac App Store are smooth (OS X Lion purchase is as smooth as silk) but for convenience's sake, the MBP should keep the SuperDrive. I consider the MacBook Air 15" is to bridge the gap between the Pro and the MacBook Air and to compensate the discontinuation of the MacBook White.

"Pros" are more likely to use optical media. A bit of blu-ray would make the MBP more yummy.

I don't need a computer with an Ethernet port to figure out whether the (cable) modem is dishing out IP addresses to my WiFi base station or whether the WiFi base station can connect to the internet. The configuration tool of the WiFi base station can tell me all that. And if the ISP tech support insists that does not count, ignore them, just tell you had your computer connected to the Ethernet port, for diagnostic purposes that is the same.

Why? Just because it might undermine your position? In terms of space saving, infrequent usage, and solvability via peripherals, they are quite similar.

No, I think people have voted with their feet by flocking to the MBA (from the same-screen-sized MBs and 13" MBPs). But I guess anybody who does not agree with you must be stupid and bases their decision on the Apple's marketing and not on what product makes him or her a satisfied customer.

Ok so now we know you are dishonest, or young and naive. I will go with naive as your argument has been based on your own usage and not the bigger picture that will tell you Ethernet is pretty much wide spread in it's use today.

Now lets talk iCloud and Timecapsule, you want everyone to use the slowest technology currently available to access all their data and backup all their data just so you can have a thin laptop, and you are stating this is a good thing??

This is what you are saying??

I would never dare to label any notebook without FW800, dedicated graphics card or upgradable RAM "Pro". At least not in my line of work.
I probably could live without the superdrive. Not because I don't use it. More for the reason that almost every external BD or DVD drive will beat Apple's crappy optical drives drives by miles... :(

Sure, the Airs are fantastic ultra-portable companions – if you still got a Mac Pro or iMac at hand for the real heavy lifting.

If you had the foresight to pack some DVDs, you can also have the foresight to pack a DVD drive. It is not like that busses have DVD vending machines. Same way as packing a charger when you pack almost any electronic device.

Thats not the point, I dont want to have to carry around a whole other piece of hardware just on the off chance I might wanna watch a DVD when I'm bored. My goodness, its not as if the current MBPs are backbreaking... I'd rather have the convenience of having a DVD player built into my ONE machine, instead of sacrificing it all for the sake of having a fractionally lighter, marginally thinner laptop just so i can say "oh look at me, I have a brand new macbook thats so thin I cant even see it from the side and falls down between floorboard!" *smug wanker expression*

I'll stick with my DVD player thank you very much :)

Yeah imagine this:

Desk setup: 2012 MacBook Pro with Air form factor, powered USB hub for Ethernet adapter and external disc drive.

Compared to:
2011 MacBook Pro (don't need an Ethernet and/or USB DVD drive as they're built-in)

So much for a laptop.
