Why would the EU’s percentage of iPhone revenue be significantly different than its percentage of App Store revenue? Do EU citizens buy fewer apps than Americans?

Honestly would love to know a good reason.
That's gonna be anecdotal, but I would say 100%.

Median salary in my country (France) is $2000 so I guess we buy far less stuff in general. Once we get the iPhone we don't have much money left for anything else 😂

The European Union today issued a warning to Apple, demanding that the tech giant open up its iOS operating system to rival companies and third-party developers or potentially face significant fines. The move is part of the EU's efforts to enforce the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which aims to ensure fair competition in the digital marketplace.

The European Commission has initiated two specification proceedings to guide Apple towards compliance with its interoperability obligations under the DMA. These latest proceedings focus on iOS connectivity features for connected devices and the process Apple has established for addressing interoperability requests from developers.

In a statement accompanying the Commission's press release, EU executive vice-president Margrethe Vestager said, "Today is the first time we use specification proceedings under the DMA to guide Apple towards effective compliance with its interoperability obligations through constructive dialogue."

"We are focused on ensuring fair and open digital markets. Effective interoperability, for example with smartphones and their operating systems, plays an important role in this," Vestager added.

The first proceeding targets iOS functionalities predominantly used by connected devices such as smartwatches, headphones, and virtual reality headsets. The EU intends to specify how Apple should provide effective interoperability with features like notifications, device pairing, and connectivity.

The second proceeding examines the transparency, timeliness, and fairness of Apple's process for handling interoperability requests from developers and third parties for iOS and iPadOS.

Currently, Apple offers limited developer access to certain iOS features, such as its Siri voice assistant, and restricts access to the contactless payments system foundational to Apple Pay. The EU's action aims to address these limitations and ensure a more open ecosystem.

The EU has given Apple six months to address these concerns. If the company fails to comply, it could face fines of up to 10% of its annual turnover under the DMA's provisions.

The latest warning comes even though Apple has already loosened its App Store regulations for developers and has committed to opening up its NFC chip to third parties in response to the DMA. However, the EU's latest action suggests that these measures may not be sufficient to fully comply with the new regulations.

What an absolute joke of a government. Why don’t you ask Spotify to pay their artist more?

Or ask IKEA to open their shelves for items from Homesense?

I know it’ll never happen, but I wish they would just pull out of the entire market.

Nothing the EU makes sense, their attack on Apple is just money grab, they demand things to be a certain way without making it really work for their citizens. There is an entire disconnect with how the EU is behaving lately and it is worrisome as their aim is not to make it safe but rather unsafe. I don't understand why we need another app store on our device, why we can't have AI, why I can't mirror my iPhone in my MacOS 15... these are odd decisions. It should be up to the customer right to choose. Someone ought to investigate the integrity of the EU and their decisions.

EDIT: Also EU is spending far too much time going after Apple and spending resources on it rather than protecting and ensuring their citizens are safe walking outside at night, that financially they are not going to suffer due to the mass migration etc.
I think that part of the issue is Apple behaves like a petulant child, deliberately misinterpreting the clear spirit and intent of EU rulings in their implementation, crippling the user experience along the way so they can say 'Oh look what the nasty EU made us do to you'. As a strategy, it seems to be working quite well.

I agree regarding competition but if it means Apple decides to starts holding back features and functionality at the expense of this 'open operability', we might not feel the same. Apple will do all of this kicking and screaming and I wouldn't put it past them to do that very thing to EU versions of their devices.
Good. Why should a company work for free to incorporate another company smart watch when they sell one?

That makes zero sense

Apple could open iOS completely up per the request of the EU, and it still would not be enough. Then they would demand Apple allow third-parties to install iOS on their own devices.

The goalposts keep moving.

Apple has an existential crisis on its hands. They're totally capable of complying, but by doing so they will feed the troll and make it even stronger. The demands will never stop. Ultimately they want Apple's money and POWER.

I say Apple should cease release of all new phones and software. Let the people see that they're being used as pawns for the EU to gain and them to lose. Unions for the people are good. Unions for corrupt governments are BAD.

Th EU system is flawed, but still, the EU is not an authoritarian regime, it has real courts with real judges. And Apple won’t leave the EU or make worse devices for the EU market, because shareholders won’t allow that on the basis of "EU bureaucrats are mean to us 😭"

You gave yourself the answer to your question you know.

IKEA is not prohibiting you from putting Homesense stuff into your shelves once you bought it. Apple actually is with the watches.

BUT this is not only true for apple. Car manufacturers for example (especially the Europeans) have been applying those practices for years. Linking car batteries, engine parts, and so on.

Expect to see gimped up iPhone with less hardware and even lesser software features specially for EU. Soon the EU iPhones will be worse than African iPhone models.
That’s Apple’s right. And then they will lose a lot of customers.

It’s so weird for a European to read how Americans take the side of a company over people.

Interoperability: great! Privacy: great! Universal port: great! 2 year warranty: great! Stop complaining and enjoy your products.

Wait. At the end of this, we might be able to use other smartwatches PROPERLY with an iPhone? This is horrible news. Competition is bad customers!
There’s definitely a cultural devide between Americans and Europeans.

Americans seem to believe that money is entitled to unbridled power. Workers and consumers should simple suck up what is offered.

Unions for workers or plans by supra national governments to control their markets from profit seeking monopolies are seen as intrinsically bad.

The first time I saw the EU do this they forced all mobile phone operators to use the same charging block standard as it was fed up with landfill sites filling up with erroneous chargers. 🔌 that was a really good thing!!!

I for one don’t have a problem with the EU deciding how THEIR market place should operate. Apple are free to pull out if they wish, they won’t.

We literally have two OSes that are completely different. One is a wild garden and the other is an open windows-like approach.

It’s almost like all Europeans need the EU to spoon feed them as consumers.

If you don’t like one buy the other, it’s not that hard

Good job EU.

The thing is that companies like Apple need to be weakened, as they grabbed too much hard power over the consumers, like Google and Microsoft. I'm glad the EU is teaching them a lesson.

People are realizing corporations are out there to serve their own interests, first and foremost. I personally hold far-left values, so when I see buzzwords like "innovation" I don't think said person is arguing in good faith.

"Should Target be forced to sell Walmart products..."? Irrelevant, there's no physical manpower, no bureaucracy, neither does it have social or political consequences like the Spotify thing or opening up iMessage to Android.

Also "buy an Android if you don't like Apple" is very superficial because you still have an oligopoly to deal with. Apple and Samsung together hold a supermajority in premium smarphone sales, and not necessarily for competitive reasons.

It’s hard to imagine Spotify and IKEA ever becoming gatekeepers in their markets. But if they do (imagine all music artists becoming dependent on Spotify to release their music or IKEA controlling the kitchen market so that every third party appliance has to be IKEA approved), then you can be sure the EU would step in.

If you think what the EU is doing to Apple is going to help European Apple customers, you’re mistaken.

Apple is going to gimp all their European products lol.

Apparently RCS and side loading wasn’t enough.

I can already pair my AirPods and iPhone with my work Windoze laptop. So what else does the [redacted] EU want?
It's the other way round that's the issue - like Apple deliberately preventing connected features that work on their secondary devices from working on third-party ones. Like preventing smart watches and other third-party devices replying to iPhone text messages when it's possible to do so with an Apple Watch and fully achievable over the Bluetooth protocol.
