Many people legitimately miss having removable batteries, thinking they are cool. I'd like to have one, too.
That is called an anecdote, it is not proof.

Many MORE people don’t miss or care about removable batteries as evidenced by the fact that given the choice they opted for the alternative.

Pretending that just because you like something a certain way that means everyone agrees with you except people who are “brainwashed” by influencers is delusional.

The ACTUAL reality is the majority just don’t care about the thing you do, not because of influencers, but because they have different priorities than you do.

No one is stopping you from buying a phone with a removable battery.

Forcing a company like Apple to MAKE such a device when they don’t want is asinine.

Apple should demand some service for the taxes they pay.

EU please build OS for your people for EU, do your job and stop demanding others
Its easier to ask than to build ah?! Politicians that has no tech knowledge
Just asking, how do you know the that in the whole of the EU political community that nobody has any technical knowledge?
Also, even if none of them were tech savvy do you not think that they consult someone that is? Why can't an EU politician turn round to Apple and say, Hey all you tech bros know nothing about politics, stick to making software and let us make trade rules.
See how ludicrous it sounds to yet starngely so similar to your comment?

It's targeting harassments. There are at least 5 other companies on this planet that have a worse walled garden then Apple. [Sony, Google, Amazon, Meta]. I don't see the EU going after Sony, or Meta.

Contextually there's nothing wrong with walled gardens. It's like regulating the apps I put on my smart TV -- literally no one cares, nor is my TV holding a market leadership position, nor is it a sales entity in its own right, nor is it going against standards, nor is it.... etc.

And even though those names are huge, you have to respect the "gatekeeper" label. Sony isn't designing a phone that has 20% of the market with proprietary cables, a closed and insular app store, a closed and insular payment process, etc. Show me an example of Sony or Meta performing the same behaviors. It's not about how large the company is, it's about how it plays equally in the field as a gatekeeper to other products in the field.

In general I understand where the EU is coming from here and why they demand this. All that stuff about the APis for developers seems pretty reasonable and good in fact. Also sure, why not forward messages to other smartwatches. the pairing stuff could be difficult without the appropriate chips in the crappy 3rd party hardware. I just don’t like that they push on these issues now that Apple is already withholding Apple Intelligence from us loyal EU customers…

LOL no.

First Apple is not a mob boss. Anyone who buys an Apple product or developers software for an Apple product does so entirely by choice. Literally no one is forced to do buy an iPhone or write an iOS app against their will. And you are completely free to by a non-Apple device or develop for non-Apple platforms at any time and Apple will do exactly nothing to you. That makes them the worst “mob boss” of all time.

Second no, I don’t want companies running society. I also don’t want governments running product development at private companies.

I want governments to ensure companies:

1. Don’t sell dangerous products
2. Tell the truth about their products so I can accurately make my purchasing decisions
3. Step in if a company gains monopoly power and abuses it.

The DMA does none of those things. It’s simply an excuse to punish and control non-European companies.
No dude, the DMA does all three of these things. Apple's iMessage has potentially dangerous social consequences - look at grown ups bullying each other for this.

The truth about their products can be found independently. The DMA helps by offering guidelines in this aspect. You can't lie about your product when marketing it.

And Apple is part of an oligopoly, and when you're so powerful it kinda makes sense why your third point also falls flat. This is why Apple is a mob boss - I'm reading some of the comments here and am wondering if Apple is using AI to train bots into posting nonsense or something.

Apple brought this upon itself with the pathetic attempt at malicious compliance it attempted when the DMA became effective. Many of us predicted the EU would hit it hard and it is happening. Now I’ll go get the smallest violin I can find as I have very little sympathy for Apple after it tried charging that ridiculous core fee and restricting changes to iPhone leaving iPad out etc. this is a just punishment and one that will make technology better in the eu.

Apple is not complying maliciously. Malicious compliance would be opening up everything, but doing no safety or security or piracy checks on third-party app stores and side loaded apps and shrugging its shoulders and pointing to the EU when their phones got hosed.

Good. Fitbit has to be one of the only health trackers that Apple Health refuses to integrate with and it's been like this for YEARS. I want to transfer my (years worth of) health data into Apple Health so I can potentially swap to Apple Watch later on when Google (inevitably) bins Fitbit for good and maintain my health record, but I currently can't.

Another one is HomeKit that basically works with nothing. Google Home and Alexa work with almost every smart connected device but Apple HomeKit works with nothing I own. It's ****ing stupid. Apple's gated ecosystem is so anti-consumer, I'm glad the governments and regulators are stepping in.

If only there was another ecosystem that worked better with Google Home and Fitbit you could switch to.

Replying to an anecdote with an anecdote while shifting the burden of proof. Hahaha.

Also, I didn't imply people are brainwashed. Because of influencers pushing the idea of thin and light, they are now everywhere on the market. This has not been an electoral process, just companies following their own self-interest.

Apple isn't forced to do anything, if they don't like it they need to not release phones in the EU anymore. And not resort to greenwashing either.

Germany, France, Italy, Dutch and Spain existed for centuries. Not to mention Austrian Hungarian empires. EU isn’t a country, it’s union of bullies.
Should have made that clearer in your response then as you were specifically replying in context to the “EU” as we know it today.

But you could pretty much name any country and that being a bully is true. USA included.

Also Dutch isn’t a country ;)

Whats next, EU depands Apple to give iOS to the European Commission?
Please Apple give EU iOS and your entire business on a plate
Why is there a 100% tariff on Chinese EV cars? Almost like countries can decide what gets sold in their territory.

While certain “open” interfaces do make sense to me like sharing notifications with SmartWatches, as an Apple customer I don’t want Apple spending significant time/resources on this. I buy into the Apple ecosystem, because of their extremely tight (and increasingly functional) integration between Apple devices. Even though I own a couple of Garmin watches, I could care less about notification service between Apple iPhones and Garmin watches. That’s not why I buy Apple. If Garmin customers want tight notification then they should get after Garmin to produce a phone, tablet, etc. Or Garmin smartwatch customers should be expected to purchase a Garmin feature add-on for their iPhone to enable Gamin-Apple notification synchronization. There is no reason Apple should be expected to do this for free, and those of us who are Apple ecosystem customers should not be forced by EU or others to subsidize Garmin-Apple linkages.

I sense a plot to destroy the Jedi here… Maybe we all are looking at this the wrong way

What if this is really all about making iOS/Mac OS encryption vulnerable to government watch dogs? It’s starting to make sense here

The EU is really different from America in that way. Our constitution allows us to literally tell the government to “Go F themselves” when it comes to big brother while the EU is happy to enforce playing watch dog over their citizens

Apple should leave the market… or at least act like it it and see how the EU will react. If Apple does leave the market and the EU government doesn’t complain about it… then it is about security

What do I know… this is all speculation but that doesn’t mean I’m not wrong here

This. I buy apple products for the seamless integration. I don’t care at all about how my garmin fenix integrates. It’s a fitness watch.

When it comes to smartphones, the EU doesn't like that no one other then Apple can make iOS, make iPhones. They want Samsung, OnePlus, Huawei to manufacture iPhones and have their own iOS software.

Apple gave them side-load = Not happy
Apple gave them USB-C = Not happy
Apple gave them RCS = Not happy

EU demands more = Apple says "". It's time Apple reminded the world who the real boss is.

Apple is a trillion dollar company because they deserved it. The EARNED the right. The entire tech existence is because of Apple and MSFT. Without them, none of this would exist.
This is a joke. Technology will continue existing just fine without Apple and Microsoft. If Apple wants to leave the EU, fine, we'll buy OnePlus and Samsung instead.

I don't remember the EU forcing them to make an iOS version for the competition either. Slippery slope, much?

Yes because phones are usually targeted by malicious apps not by exploits, social engineering or sim swapping. 🤣
