It is rather like a car manufacturer just putting in a new Engine, updating the seats and dashboard and doing a relaunch. They always change the externals because that is what the customers expect.

That's actually a really good analogy you make there! Apple could have easily changed things at the last minute, especially with the new breed of Android smartphones already making the 4S outdated, but they didn't because they knew that most Apple sheeple would buy it because it's an Apple product.

To be honest, I'm actually disappointed they didn't announce a new iPod Touch and if they do announce one in the near future with increased storage especially with the top-of-the-range version, I will be pissed as that's the only Apple product I would ever buy!

The biggest issue I think Apple have is lack of variety: They are now selling 3 phones which are basically the same form factor but with different levels of performance - they all have pretty much the same physical size and exactly the same screen size. The iPhone size is basically "in the middle" - too big to be a compact phone and too small to satisfy those who want larger screens.

As an example, my daughter wants a small compact phone and my wife wants a larger screen as her eyes aren't as good as they were. With iPhone, they are stuck with the compromise size; with Android, they could choose the physical size that fits their needs (such as an Xperia mini for a compact phone, or a Galaxy S2 for a large screen).

For some people, the lure of iOS is enough for them to ignore the other issues, but for some I suspect it won't be: There's no point in having a great OS if you can't carry it around easily or you can't see the screen easily!

They did announce a new iPod touch.

???

Actually the car analogy is absolutely terrible, because they do in fact keep the same external design for at least several years in a row.

Just look at the Porsche 911. It's external shape has barely changed in 40 years.

Despite all the bad press, the phone will still sell extremely well. :p

Is that supposed to be some sort of conciliation prize?

Is that supposed to make me feel better??

Why do people keep mentioning this, like as if thats what we care about.

It has no effect on the 16 month fail cycle and our wants and expectations.

Its unanimous. The whole world is annoyed.

Yet we don't want to exercise our right to "not buy" because its still the best and only option that we are dissapointingly forced into.

We went through the same thing with iPone 3G & 3Gs..... believe me I had them both and it was difference of day/night in user experience between the two. I expect the same will be true with 4/4s. I'm getting it :)

Give it a week. 10 days. They'll be raving about the phone. Seriously - since when does the media get it right? After all, isn't that where the rumors of something other than the 4S got started?

Until iOS 4 bricked the 3G there was no difference at all in the user experience between the 3G and the 3GS.

I used both extensively.

Even the knowledgable and usually Apple-friendly WSJ is pounding (rightfully of course) Apple and Tim Cook for the major disappointment.

Bloomberg said it right though: iPhone 4S is a major disappointment, but it's still going to sell well and still keep the momentum strong for Apple.

This is truly sad. Had the device had a changed look, everyone would have been happy. What if I like the current look and just wanted a spec bump?

It's a new phone, not a new look. The lack of a new look is why people are disappointed.

I remember Apple getting blasted for not allowing flash on iOS. Yet years later, it's recognized that it was the right decision. Steve Jobs was a visionary who put his foot down and said NO, you're not putting that battery-draining crap on my platform. Now Apple puts their foot down and says NO, you're not putting a 747-sized screen on our phones.

It's a bold gambit, one that might just pay off.

Very true. The claim to fame for the new Nexus Prime is a bigger screen, sporting 320PPI. Yet the current iPhones, both the 4 and the new 4s have 326PPI. Bigger isn't always better. Nor are pure specs. I'd rather have a dual core, with an optimized OS, that is solid vs. a quad core, with mangling of pieces for an OS. IMO.

I disagree. When the 3GS came out I tested it against a couple of 3Gs at a business event and it was clearly quicker in every way. So much so that the owners of the 3Gs ditched their phones and arranged an upgrade.

I don't know if the difference will be as marked this time because the 4 performs really well, however as things progress and applications are developed to take advantage of the extra speed that may change. Of course the 5 or whatever could be out by then.

Forced into? By whom? If I need a new phone, and the 4s doesn't meet my needs, I'll find something else.

I highly doubt the "whole world" is annoyed. Go ask a person who is living in a shelter, or kid who has no food if he/she cares about the lack of insight by Apple, by not releasing a newly designed phone. The world doesn't revolve around gadgets and cell phones, sorry to inform you of that...

well lets face it. the iPhone4S is pretty under welming. Its hardware is at best 6 months old already. It screen size is well below what the average user wants and by all accounts it is a tiny screen.
Its "must have" feature of voice assistant is pretty poor.
It wireless speed is that of phones release back in spring and from my understanding it is not even HSPA+. They have the download side but lack the upload side of it and even then there already are faster ones on the market in the HSPA+ category.

It already clear that the Nexus Prime will have a better screen that is going to be at around 320ppi and true 720p (leak image today).

It is very underwhelming and it is coming out of the gate outdated.

It is in the tech world.

iPhone 4 is the best selling smartphone. The average user is clearly okay with a 3.5" screen.

The iPhone 4S will the REVERSE of the usual Apple launch...

Usually they announce a phone, everyone goes nuts (including the media) & when they arrive people have the usual issues, this has light leak... this antenna has a spot that will kill the signal.

the 4s will be reversed.. media outlets bashed it out of the gate & after people receive them & have videos on youtube of SIRI working well & the double antenna with great reception , people will come around.

Honestly if you are a consistant iPhone user & never really plan to leave it, it's a layup to get every new one that comes up. I sell my previous version it pays for my new version and i'm a happy camper. The media can complain it's not Tapered or have a .1mm bigger screen but honestly i'm cool with all of that. :D

Thats exactly the problem. The iPhone 4 is already almost instant response. Improving upon that is not the same anymore like how it went from the 3G to the 3GS.

Kind of a bad analogy. Car manufacturers usually release a new model every 6-7 years, and a mild refresh in the middle (around the 3 year point). That refresh is kinda like the 3GS and 4S

Until games start improving their graphics and game developers rely on the A5 to mirror the game to a 46" television and still perform well. You'll notice a huge difference between the 4 and 4S.

I'm not sure which car manufacturer you prefer, but I know I've been waiting for a redesigned Audi A3 since 2006. Car manufacturers usually redesign the externals every 3 - 5 years.

The bad thing about being top dog is your under a microscope and the news outlets are just blasting Apple about the 4s.

One local News channel in NYC called it iLame 4s

Very bad press day for Apple.

Well you have to wonder what is more lame, a 4s that will draw snake-like lines Friday a week or comments by news outlets that won't be remembered Friday a week.

Everyone made fun of the iPad name -- it was pretty bizarre name but it's the #1 tablet by millions of sales even still. Think of the whipping Apple got over iPhone 4, yet Apple has sold more iPhone 4s than any other iPhone -- maybe even combined by I don't have those #s in front of me.

Point is, people will try to knock down the guy on the pedestal, it's human nature. But when a company has a product people want nothing is going to stop people from getting it in their hands.

This too shall pass.
