Apple Lisa
Apple Newton
Apple Pippin
Power Mac G4 Cube
Mobile Me

Were all disappointing or outright failures, right?

Every product you just named were from Apple's distant past and were markedly different from the Vision Pro. These are all products that were made for already established markets and not trying to create a new industry. The Lisa for example was overpriced for what it could do but was still a desktop computer in a time where everyone had and wanted desktop computers. Mobile.me is iCloud before the name change. It had a rough start but very much still exists today. Virtually no one outside of serious gamers are looking to buy VR/AR headsets. Until Apple can clearly define a use case it will be a long time before it becomes viable.

I'd love to see an immersive maps app. Think of it, they could make those appear at scale and it would be absolutely incredible.
I have PSVR2 goggles that I use on a PC. Running Google Earth VR under Steam is exactly what you're looking for.

The few times I use my goggles, I run this, and I fly through the canyons of Manhattan like I'm Superman.

It is nerdy, but cool.

As a tech enthusiast I will still defend the idea of releasing expensive technology. Tech has to be released. Otherwise you get that whole Xerox park thing where there’s tons of tech sitting in offices collecting dust that could be changing lives (that’s how Steve Jobs got the idea for the mouse etc).

I’ve lived through years of devices like Laser Discs, Mini Discs, SACD, Plasma TV’s. All very expensive at launch, some made it some didnt. Thats the game.

When you think about it, I doubt they even sell 600K MacBooks at $3500. And thats an essential machine that makes people money. My biggest question is why would Apple think they were going to sell more than that for a device at that price that is not essential? I dont think they’re crazy. So what is success or failure for them? What did they learn?

It’s not like them to give up on a product category so big on the 1st attempt. I think thats unheard of in the modern Apple era.

For me, I like mine but it’s not essential and it is a struggle to use every day. It’s the best way to watch a movie thats for sure. Tron Ares in 3d is incredible. Better than any cinema. But I can afford to keep it just for a few things I like. Most people will not.

What, a 3.5K headset was not a major seller to rival iPhone, MacBooks etc...I'm shocked...perhaps they should have looked at the selling figures (and more than one user hardware configuration) of others in the market and they might have seen something... I like Apple products but I'm not going to purchase a 3K plus item that is outdated and unsupported quicker than a £400 VR headset that will allow for some gaming, VR realities etc and that won't cost a re-mortgage to replace in 1-2 years time....

Apple likes to make great things and then push them in the wrong direction.

Apple should've embraced this as VR, which is what is technically was instead of insisting it was AR/MR/whatever.

It's one of the most impressive VR visors ever made. If they added controllers and offered solid VR gamimg experiences this could've gone better. Instead they insisted you want this for productivity and fun lifestyle use. Surprise...we don't.

Fantastic product, horribly piss-poor use cases and direction.

It's just an uninteresting product.....at a completely unattainable price.

No one is gonna pay that kind of money for a cheesy device that offers a weak novel experience that ads very little to no value to.....anything.

They took losses and in in the end it didn't work. They are divesting VR. Where is there any signs Meta was successful?
Define “successful”. I freaking hate FarceBook/Meta as a company, and yet I bought a MetaVirus Metaquest3 , and i think it’s amazing for the price. I never thought i would give this evil company a single dime, and i was hoping Apple would release a reasonably priced competitor so that i can finally throw my Metaquest into a well.

There is not enough lipstick in the world for this pig.

Not everyone hits a home run every time they are at bat.

There may be discounted pricing on the horizon to recoup a tiny bit of the expense of the project rather than using the remainder of the inventory as landfill material.

Price is one thing, but it wasn't really an amazing product. Just too uncomfortable to use. I still use it from time to time but it's more of an enthusiast device.

It's sort of a glimpse into the future except it has all of these big drawbacks.

Yes there are people who use it as virtual screens for productivity and there are niche uses in industry. But it seems the large majority like it best as a movie / immersive content viewer. I'd like to see Apple release a much cheaper device for that specific use case

Once, back in the mysts of time, my now Enkwife bought me a remaindered 20th Anniversary Mac. The LCD upright one w the amazing sound. Played a lot of Myth 1 and 2 on that sucker (w a G3 upgrade card iirc?) It was a good machine for its day. House robbery stole the top half (d'oh!)
I'd love to pick up one of these M5 babies half off in a year or so...

Maybe it is a dip yer toe dev platform for the eventual glasses or contact lenses or brain waveimplantcyberwhatsis

Apple has missed public sentiment before, but I don’t think for one second they thought the original or its minor refresh were going to be hits or even justify the R&D as they were. If that they are “giving up” is true, my suspicion is that either it’s not working out technically (they had assumed they could make meaningful improvements on usability and cost but no longer think they can) or they are headed in another direction instead (like the a/r glasses (or some combo of them).

Go back and watch Jurassic Park (1993) and Disclosure (1994). Those movies demonstrated VR technology. No one cared back then, and no one cares now. No one wants to wear big heavy goggles. And Apple's ridiculous $3500 price tag was the nail in the coffin. There are plenty for sale on Facebook Marketplace, all with the same reason, 'I never wear it'. Big fail for Apple. It is about time they killed off that product. Maybe they will bury the unsold headsets in the landfill next to the E.T. game cartridges. There are too many iPhone models and too many iPad models too. They need to clean house on those too.

Here's my reaction to this news

This is 100% expected.

Sadly, the Vision Pro was a flop basically out of the gate.
M5 spec bumping it was never going to do a thing.

I mean at 3500 were they seriously expecting a success?

If so may I suggest they hire me for 500k p/a and I’ll save them from these obvious blunders moving forward.
