Yes, but if you know what something else is going to look like you'll alter your ideas about what you are doing to conform to it. There was a reason to Steve's development ideas and I don't think anything has changed.

It still blows my mind that when the iPhone was being developed the team working on the software wasn't allowed to see the hardware and vice versa. The designers taped a piece of paper with a fake UI on to the hardware. All because of Steve Jobs obsession with secrecy. Don Melton, who created Safari and lead the Safari team at Apple for many years said the biggest thing he wished the company would change is its obsession with secrecy inside the company and employees not allowed to know what other employees are working on.
Dare I say ironic given that one of the selling points is the tight integration between hardware and software

Really trying to figure out how virtual reality will expand beyond video games...

I guess you could design a house or something and virtually walk thru it before you build/buy it.

It will probably be entertainment focused mainly but it might expand well beyond the gaming community. Virtual tourism would be one thing where you get to walk around and see famous places for a modest fee. Or experience VR concerts or sporting events. If the screen is realistic enough (and tech is years away from reaching that level) the experience will be much immersive than just viewing on a TV. And TV is very popular, in case you didn't know. So TV/Movies that are even more fun will be a really big deal.

John Carmack at Occulus has shown that nausea-free VR/AR requires movement-to-light rendering times of under 20ms. That's a VERY short time, requiring tight control of significant hardware. He was able (barely) to talk Samsung into implementing an un-buffered video mode making it possible to use a Samsung phone as the head-mounted display. Apple hasn't gone quite there yet, but has now seen it's possible but requires the VR/AR team be involved in phone development. Tethered CPU/GPU system provides considerably more graphics power, but then is stifled by just getting the image to the headset - wireless transmission has serious delay problems (see aforementioned 20ms), and using a wire blindly has its own problems (trust me - don't get tangled).

Personally, I'm really looking forward to see what Apple does in this space. The possibilities are endless... Gaming, entertainment, education, communications, virtual worlds, research, etc.

VR will definitely be huge but hardware, UI, software has to all come together in a way that gives it mass market appeal. That's still a few years away so I don't see Apple rushing into anytime soon. I can see Apple doing something with AR this year or next though.

So in a few years we can enjoy a ride in an Apple Car while virtually laying on the beach?

Go apple, let's see that you can put together that runs of the IGP.

Or maybe apple is working on an awesome driving simulator :p

I don't understand the craze about VR. 3D never became that mainstream, why VR? Who is gonna be wearing those freaky goggles all the time?

Let me present you with a scenario.

Let's say you have a family relative that is in mid 50's. They experience a heart attack and will require a bypass or pacemaker or who knows.

Fast forward, your relative is undergoing surgery for the bypass. Here is where AR/VR come in. The surgeon puts on AR/VR goggles and now more information is being poured onto the screen. Things like inventory and personnel info. Now they look at the patient and make the incisions. As they open up the heart area, more info pops into the AR/VR device such as flow of blood and bpm by looks. Now imagine additional tools, IoT medical tools, being used inside the heart to determine other factors as density of blood and suggestions as to where to perform additional surgical operations for the procedure.

VR + AR+ IOT = amazing stuff ahead. It's not just for gaming, it's for real world applications. Architects can store their blueprints into their AR device and produce even more data as they plan and help with construction.

Electricians use it to provide different Amp outputs on an electrical box without having to disassemble or detach anything.

These are the things that Apple, Google, Samsung, and other manufactures are really wanting AR/VR to go into. Gaming and entertainment is just a bonus, but that's more my opinion about that.

FYI, if you want a multi-million dollar company to build, creating AR stuff for medicine will bank it big time.

Apple has no new ideas, they are just doing the same as Hollywood... remakes, prequels and sequels. VR helmets are sooo 80's, 90's... One day Apple with come up with a Hoverboard... yeah! and then a Pet Rock.

I feel like a fanboy by saying I'm really excited for this... However, Apple would be the only company to make the complete product. You can bet on something released by Apple really gaining main stream traction. They will make sure it's a complete product inside out which means if you buy it you will actually get lots of use on it with lots of content.

I'm glad we live in times when 720p is just for cheap low end phones. The iPhone 6s with it's 1334x750 display sure is a premium product well worth its premium price tag. That nice IPS panel Apple blesses us with sure beats the OLED lesser phones force on their customers too. And 16g of flash just screams modern and high end.

Verizon was practically giving away brand new Droid mini's a few weeks ago and that phone has a 720p display and 16gb. The price? $8 after $100 coupon.
I love my 6S but it's resolution is years behind current flagships. I have no complaints because the screen is excellent but HTC did 1080p on the 4.7" M7 back in 2013.

^^^This.

Not sure, though, as I did not bother to see the 60 minutes piece. (Can't take empty platitudes well.)

Maybe what you see on the exec page is alphabetized (have not bothered to check), with a pinch of political correctness, and a pound of "I hired her."

Regardless: "God Save the Queen"

Where is your cited source regarding Don Melton stating "He wished for the Company to change its obsession for secrecy."????? And Don Melton never directly made comments about Apple during his tenure their. I would love to see or read where you deciphered this??

You do know this is the same Company who is working/contracted for the Pentagon for secure phones right?? You seem to make these quotes regarding Apple Executives, yet have no credentials RogiFan.

Or since nobody can afford a house anymore, we can all pretend via a computer simulation - yeah, selling a faking life is so rad!! Which reminds me, VR can be used for porn too...
