Apple also have a 2-year lead on Emojis, however opposite could be said about screens, wireless charging, smaller bezels, and... batteries maybe?.

I think you misunderstand what "2-year lead" means. They don't have a 2 year lead on Emojis, Any company could make emojis without any real research going into it. They buy there screens from other manufactures so they aren't behind there, Wireless charging is a standard so they weren't behind there, bezels also no behind, nor battery technology.

Apple was late to the game in some of those fields, but there where never behind. FaceID having a 2-year lead means it'll take 2 years for other companies to research the technology to get it into a phone.

Are you disappointed that Apple cares about privacy? Google sells your data for profit and Facebook apparently does it too.

I was commenting to the ridiculous post that Apple is struggling, slipping, falling off, etc.

Their software is still quite a bit better than Android. More stable, smoother, better apps, etc. Android is just more customizable and offers options, but there are tradeoffs. I owned an Android phone before the X and I'm glad I switched. Soooo much better.
Can we please stop with the fairy tale that apple cares about your privacy. The just sold out to Chinese government big time, handing over their private keys like it was nothing

By that logic anyone can buy competing face ID tech and voila, not behind anymore...

It's absolutely fair to say that Apple is behind in screen tech and phone design (bezels). Samsung could easily withhold instead of selling Apple overpriced screens. Apple would then have to buy the 2nd best screen. In fact, the X arguably does not have the best screen on the market.
So Apple is currently behind in screen tech, right?

The truth of the matter is outside of Apple die hards no one cares about the underlining face ID tech if the end result is the same (unlocking a phone).
Ex: Google is doing wonders with software enhanced portrait mode where Apple needs a second lens to accomplish the same thing. Do we now say Apple is 2 year behind in camera tech? No we don't because the end result is the same to the consumer.

Sounds great and all that they have the lead currently. The question is if they can keep it or possibly pull even further ahead.

Siri......

i didn't say apple is "struggling, slipping, falling off" i said when then have a huge lead (meaning software) they tend to lose that lead.
So you think privacy and good AI are mutually exclusive? I don't. Apple has tons and tons of data about us on the phone - they don't need to sell it to create great AI. they don't need to ignore privacy to create great AI. They can create an amazing AI experience with only the data they have local on the phone. But they're not.

That isn't saying much, FaceId isn't very impressive. It's amazing how often it misses if you aren't looking at it straight on.

Now, bring on the masses of "but it works fine for me 100% of the time REEEEE"

Just got an X last week and that damn Face ID is driving me mad, even with 'attention mode' turned off, it's much worse than Touch ID. Back it goes...

doesn't sound like you have used the phone at all....as there's no chance that is the case if you have actually used face ID.

Iris scanner is very secure, you are confused with the facial unlock...
Neither are very secure really. Not compared to face ID

More like they will put money into R&D while Apple thinks its lead is safe and then overtake Apple when Apple moves on to their next pointless pet project.

Right. That’s why every Android manufacturer tries to do what Apple does, hardware and software. Google products are one big pointless project driven by advertising.
[doublepost=1521575519][/doublepost]
Why do we NEED that solution? How hard is it to just look straight into your iPhone? Are we that lazy?

While I agree, I gave up on that argument before the X even came out. I figured if you needed your phone unlocked, you might want to look at it. People thought I was crazy though.

Housing Chinese data in China is not the same as giving the Chinese government access to everyone’s encrypted data. Apple isn’t above the laws of the countries they sell devices in.

Samsung is developing new sensor that will open when you blow at it. Smelly breath will be recognised and phone will open.

Let's put it this way. Apple cares about privacy a hell of a lot more than Facebook or Google. And apple didn't hand them anything. You need to read the story more carefully.

They are developing AI as they see fit. I can't question their method and I don't think Siri is as bad as you do. Google's is what it is not because they are a better company, but because they are data mongers.

Eh? Why is this story being regurgitated then?

And as for FaceID, yeah....

Why would you compare different technologies as if they are the same?

And yes, Intelligent Scan was slower than FaceID in the vid on several runs....and it's not even doing 3D mapping.

doesn't sound like you have used the phone at all....as there's no chance that is the case if you have actually used faceBlahblah

There is a chance as I’m using it to type this now.
It’s just the ‘look directly at the phone’ business, its such a pain, for me at least

When I saw that headline I came straight here to the forum to see the outpouring of pain from the Apple haters who troll around this website.
Faced with a 2 YEAR ADVANTAGE there was bound to be some crazy postings about how crap Face ID is etc.
I was certainly wasn't disappointed! You made my day.
Keep shouting it down, keep making excuses and keep being sore losers while I glance lovingly at my iPhoneX and it opens to my smiling eyes.

Problem is that’s not what happened. Apple moved data and keys to servers owned and operated by the Chinese government, giving them full access to all iCloud data. To quote Amnesty international:
„Domestic law gives the Chinese government virtually unfettered access to user data stored inside China without adequate protection for users’ rights to privacy, freedom of expression or other basic human rights. Chinese police enjoy sweeping discretion and use broad and ambiguously constructed laws and regulations to silence dissent, restrict or censor information and harass and prosecute human rights defenders and others in the name of “national security” and other purported criminal offences. As a result, Chinese Internet users can face arrest and imprisonment for merely expressing, communicating or accessing information and ideas that the authorities don’t like.“

https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2018/02/5-things-you-need-to-know-about-apple-in-china/

And then it is widely reported that they get the private keys so I can assure you they will do everything they can to mine the **** out of iCloud data no matter what the official deal might be.

And Face ID was fooled with a mask..... The Iris scanner is very secure and cant be tricked by people who look similar.

Except FaceID wasn’t tricked. The people with the mask pulled the same scam as everyone else - use a second person, then enter your PIN on a false unlock which tells FaceID it’s the same person. It then learns the other persons face as well.

Ars asked the group that did the mask unlock some very specific questions which they couldn’t answer (or refused to answer). In short, they couldn’t back up their ckaims. Just another scammer looking for their 15 minutes of fame.

Wrong. You can turn that feature off. But even then, it still fails all the time.

Suuuuuure it does. I don’t know a single person with the iPhone X (my entire family of four and another half dozen at work) that has issues with FaceID. In fact they all think it’s great.

If your iPhone X is failing “all the time” you should return it under warranty and get a replacement. It’s clearly defective.

Even Gruber called out the same issue. Gruber.
