Why should there be an apple app store fee, if devs are using Amazon or epic online app store? There's a thing called the first-sale doctrine in USA, apple sold the iPhone, I'm allowed to do anything with it, it is my property.

While you own the hardware, you do not own he OS. The hardware wont do anything unless the OS allows it to.

Those of you suggesting Apple “should just leave the EU”, should consider this, from iPhone’s new best friend:

Besides, the US, the UK, Turkey, Australia, Brazil, India and Japan are currently working on similar laws.

As I said before, Apple can make it all go away by making iOS and iPadOS as open as macOS.
That's all of Europe, but the EU is a subset of Europe that accounts for closer to an estimated 7%. Still a big hit if they lost it, but not anywhere near 24%.

A lot of ‘Blame the EU’ posts here, but this time Apple actually seems to be dumb and reckless. Apparently they’re abusing the (what should be automated) notarization process to withhold apps from appearing in alternative App Marketplaces. Something they clearly agreed not to do. See: https://sixcolors.com/link/2024/06/apple-refuses-to-notarize-emulator-app/
If they’re indeed in violation, this could really hurt business and Cook’s days at Apple might be over. Why? I don’t think the board is gonna stand behind Cook for risking a 10% revenue fine for something very minor.

"...... how Apple should operate within the borders and for the citizens of its member countries..."

If that's the case then why does the EU feel entitled to extort 5% of Apple's global revenue?
Would it make you happier if they said they’ll penalise them for 50% of Apple’s revenue in just EU then? Lol

They literally just have to follow the law like everyone else. It’s ridiculous apple fanboys are defending this ****. Apple are being scummy af.

I don’t know about you guys. But I must confess that:

And soon the rest of the world will follow in the EU’s footsteps.

Apple is being backed into a corner with no way out but complying to the law.

And if not.. it will be fined upwards of one billion dollars!!

The EC believes that Apple is not complying with its obligation to allow developers to "steer" users outside of the App Store without fees.

This will come down to a lot of arguing in courts - with Apple claiming they have complied with the letter of the law and the Competition Commissioner trying to demonstrate they have not abided by the spirit of the law (which they plainly haven't).

But then the EC is being a bit silly here. Within Europe, Apple commands a much much lower market share than in the US. And the EC, being a collection of well-paid civil servants, may not have reality firmly in their grasp. The things they ask for wouldn't make a lot of sense for anyone.

Those 7% relate to the App Store revenue, but if you add on the hardware sales, services, etc. this number will grow:

Besides, do not discount the other countries, mentioned in my post you quote, including the US.

That’s not 7% of global revenue, just App Store revenue. They don’t sell as much iPhones in the EU, Android is very dominant there.

To those here against EU regulation.. Just a thought experiment:

If iOS and Android where from Chinese based companies. And they make up rules which apps are allowed in the store, according to Chinese values and principals.

Would the US just sit there, and say: thats cool, you invented it, you can do what you believe its right.

Don’t agree with Apple’s stance but it does look watertight acceptable based on the law the EU wrote. Can’t be blamed for poor drafting.

You can’t enforce “spirit”, just letter.

Apple’s implementation of the DMA was just a legal farce with no real-world benefits to users. Most controversial points being the .50€ fee per install and Apple’s notarization.

Once again, if Apple made iOS and iPadOS work like macOS with regards to apps installation process, the EU and others would have to drop the complaints.

In such scenario… Apple should allow to configure and fully use the Apple Watch:

If Apple isn’t allowed to make money on apps developed for their devices with their coding platform the answer is going to be simple. The developer entry cost is going up significantly. Xcode licensees will be a contract with Apple with varied costs and contact renewals. It’s going to take a ton of restructuring, and Apple is stalling while they make the necessary plans. Do what with wish with your app distribution but do people really think that multi-million/billion dollar corps are going to pay 99/299 a year and have a free pass? It’s insanely absurd.
As a consumer, I’m not really sure what we’re clinging on to. I stopped buying iPhone apps when they all became rip off subscriptions. And they all became rip off subscriptions with Apple’s basically “free” generous Xcode licenses and development software.

If Microsoft pulled this crap with Windows everybody would lose their minds. Apple has been doing it since 2008 and everybody is ok with it.

I don’t get it.

I will never understand why people defend companies like Apple for their behavior. Like foot soldiers, they talk as if there's something in it for them. They don't get it that "the government" actually works for the people, not against them.

They buy overpriced devices and ignore the fact, that Apples only goal is to destroy all competition in their market. Which of course leads to even higher prices.
I love the EU, please go on kicking aggressive companies' asses!

Apple is very good at branding and marketing. Somehow they made everyone believe that they are the only ones to be trusted with their data on the World Wide Web even though they are just another channel of many at the end of the day.

Sometimes I wonder if the same people never buy plane tickets online for example. They also have your personal data!

At the end of the day, the problem always sits in front of the computer so to speak.
