How about the iPhone striking the driver during a crash knocking the driver out followed by flying out the window and landing in a birds nest where it is adopted and covered with feathers.

"trained with over a million hours of real-world driving and crash record data" for increased accuracy.

I wonder where Apple was able to get this data from. You'd think they'd want data from actual iPhones, so they could calibrate the algorithms to Apple's sensors.

The machine can only know that what it had experienced was a car crash when you have the data and someone or something to tell it that was actually a crash. Most cars right now do not expose the data from their sensors to smartphones so it's not available to them. In addition, if they do not ask for your permission and collect this data (the way google and Amazon has done for the longest time), this would be a violation of their privacy policy.

Apple has mentioned they have worked with state of the art crash testing sites and data gathered from the transport ministry. This is the most privacy preserving approach while gathering the most accurate data possible.

As for the naysayers out there, no one needs fall detection either until you need it. This is one of those features that you'd be glad to have it should it ever occur to you.

It's not a feature that would make me want to buy a new iPhone tomorrow, but it's definitely a feature that I'd want in my next iPhone.

What if I am the passenger? How does the phone determine what seat I am in. Or if i have stopped for a moment in traffic, so I want to check my messages, or let the party I am meeting know that I am stopped in traffic and running late. Do you not have the self-control to ignore your phone when you are in control of a moving vehicle? You need software to help you with that (there’s lame for ya) ? Yet if you are unconscious after rolling down an embankment, having your phone call for life-saving assistance and sharing your location is lame? Sure 😉
LOL because rolling down an embankment with no one around let alone being knocked out happens all the time. Why not put a detection for alien abduction? You seem the type that would believe in that as well.

I thought iOS didn't crash?

Yes, and not to mention all the dummy calls the emergency call centers will receive with this feature, eventually ignoring them when they get one.
I think it’s worth it if one life was saved even at the cost of 10-20 dummy calls each, even if more tax gets spend on expanding call centers. Most call centers also have to verify an accidental dial by calling back to make sure it’s not a silent call under duress.

Thanos had it right all along.

The Crash Detection is just a sad attempt at diverting attention away from the lack of new innovation and trying to tug at heartstrings by playing the protect your loved ones and yourself card.

What new innovations would you like in your phone? I'm curious what this list should include at this point in the lifecycle of smartphones...Holographic images? or just USB-C lol

Great if it convinces you. Apple is laughing all the way to the bank by playing on people's fears.
The feature is included, so it doesn't cost you any more than you would have already paid for. That is, unless you are upgrading BECAUSE of it exclusively, which sounds ridiculous.

With iPhones (and Apple products in general), it's never the ONE thing. It's a combo effect that makes their devices attractive (at least to me).

You just know some kids will be on YouTube making videos to how much it will take to trigger this system ... can't wait to hear about arrests for wasting emergency resources.

I didn't order my iPhone 14 for this feature near do I fear being in an accident, but I appreciate them offering it and hope that I never need to use it. If this brings someone peace of mind, awesome. I seriously doubt people are upgrading their family members devices just for this feature.
And if it saves just ONE person's life, it's worth it.

Yes it needs to be integrated. Somehow the iPhone should be able to send something with the 911 call to tell them it's a crash call and not another where the people would be unsafe if they made noise.

This feature is already present in my BMW and many other brands. It automatically calls emergency service with gps location when a crash is detected. Now I have a backup in case one doesn’t work. ;)

The way my ex drives you need a pressure suit forcing blood back into crucial organs in the body - you definitely pull a few G's with her even going just going to the local store (she has never had an accident by the way, she just has the mentality and reflexes of a fighter pilot). So my question is what is the rate of false positives with this system? Something asking you if you need help, as the system does, could be dangerously distracting while you are driving if there actually isn't an accident.

I clearly posted that they are a low occurrence, but that if you are that low occurrence, it would be a potential life saver. Are you saying those accidents don’t happen? Even Tiger Wood’s well-documented accident in a populated area took 10 minutes for discovery (after rolling down an embankment) and subsequent reporting to emergency services. Alien abductions? Clearly an intellectual discussion isn’t possible with you. Move along troll.

That’s perfectly reasonable, as long as they hit the “no help needed” option within ten seconds. No resources wasted.

No one is forcing you to upgrade.
