What new innovations would you like in your phone? I'm curious what this list should include at this point in the lifecycle of smartphones...Holographic images? or just USB-C lol
What passes for "innovation" here is emulating retro video games, using torrent clients, and animated wallpapers.

Apple today shared its first ad for the iPhone 14 Pro, highlighting new features like car crash detection, the upgraded rear camera system with a 48-megapixel main lens, and an always-on display with the new Dynamic Island feature.

"iPhone 14 Pro comes with Crash Detection, a vital new safety feature that can detect a severe car crash and automatically call for help, even when you can't," says Apple, in the video's description. "Add this to the new 48MP Pro camera and a totally reimagined display, and iPhone 14 Pro redefines what a smartphone can do. Again."

With a new dual-core accelerometer, barometer, and other sensors, Apple says iPhone 14 Pro models can detect a severe car crash and automatically dial emergency services if a user is unresponsive after a 10-second countdown. Apple says the feature relies on "advanced Apple-designed motion algorithms trained with over a million hours of real-world driving and crash record data" for increased accuracy.

The crash detection feature is also available on the new Apple Watch Ultra, Apple Watch Series 8, and second-generation Apple Watch SE models.

Exclusive to iPhone 14 Pro models, the Dynamic Island replaces the traditional notch found on iPhone 13 models. Aided by software, the pill-shaped cutout morphs into different shapes and sizes for things such as incoming phone calls, alerts, notifications, Face ID authentication, timers, turn-by-turn navigation, Live Activities, and more.

With an always-on display, the time, widgets, and Live Activities are always available at a glance on iPhone 14 Pro models. The display also has up to 2,000 nits peak brightness outdoors, which is up to twice as bright as the iPhone 13 Pro display.

iPhone 14 Pro models became available to pre-order earlier today and launch on September 16.

Rather than watching an ad, I would be interested in the actual testing method used.

My car and most rentals I've had offered to call for help on airbag deployment once connected over bluetooth or carplay.

I'm curious for situations where there's an accident that's carrying many people such as a bus/shuttle, train or even a rollercoaster...with all of those phones triggering at once...will local emergency response temporarily be overwhelmed and cause other emergency calls to get backed up? Could this work in a plane crash? There's been a few times we had to wait up to 3 minutes just to reach someone.

It would be kinda cool if they came out with a dashcam mode that would use the front camera and wide angle rear camera simultaneously.

This isn’t all that revolutionary. The same feature has been built into Ford vehicles for at least 8 years or so. I have it set to on in my 2022 Ranger.

It is revolutionary to put those sensors, that are in modern cars, into a phone. And the car’s system (In the case of the Ranger, has to use your phone to work, with very important caveats as well:

The vehicle's electrical system (including the battery), the wireless service provider's signal, and a connected mobile phone must all be available and operating for 911 Assist to function properly. These systems may become damaged in a crash. The paired mobile phone must be connected to SYNC, and the 911 Assist feature enabled, in order for 911 to be dialed. When the feature is ON, 911 Assist uses your paired and connected mobile phone to assist

In Many severe accidents, your car’s On Star or Synch system will likely not be working, loss of power, or the ability to Bluetooth to your phone, makes the car‘s capability not function, even in the likely event the phone is still ok. Far better to have the system built into the phone, which can be with you, regardless of the technology installed in the vehicle which you own, or rent, or are riding or driving in.

I wish this ad had the same narrator as the 'Introducing iPhone 14 Pro' video. Loved that voice

“Introducing : We know why your phone is broken because the sensor has registered 134 drops exceeding the G force parameters it is able to sustain and your phone is no longer covered under warranty thank you very much detection feature.”

But, this is quite neat, if not super relevant or important feature. It does show Apple is continuously adding features that might come in handy for you and doesn’t get in the way if you don’t.

And yes, they probably added some S.M.A.R.T. function to check falls, temperatures used under etc. OIS isn’t very robust (it’s moving parts). I’m actually surprised we haven’t heard a lot about failing camera modules yet…

I wonder where Apple was able to get this data from. You'd think they'd want data from actual iPhones, so they could calibrate the algorithms to Apple's sensors.
Probably their autonomous car 😂

Can't wait to have a life-altering car crash so I can fully enjoy my iPhone 14

The Crash Detection is just a sad attempt at diverting attention away from the lack of new innovation and trying to tug at heartstrings by playing the protect your loved ones and yourself card.

Really a lame feature to focus on. This will help those who are driving in the middle of nowhere and crash into a tree with such force that you either die or get knocked out and therefore the crash detection will come into play. .00001 % chance of happening for most users.

Seriously disheartened by the insensitivity and absolute inexperience in life of some people on this forum. My grandmother drove off a country road on a tight turn and rolled her car into a ditch and was there, upside down for way too long before a farmer happened to walk by and noticed the broken bushes and saw her car.

You're so inexperienced in life, cruel and (add adjectives here that would get me banned from the forum) that you're incapable of imaging the pain and suffering of someone unable to call for help because they're strapped into their seat or even unconscious. Nearly 4,000 people die in road accidents every day and if this saves the lives of even a small fraction of those lives, it's worth it. It could be you or a loved one, but it doesn't have to be for you to show empathy for those it does happen to.

Lately, evil people have shown way too much comfort in revealing who they are. Fortunately, they're a small minority and good people outnumber them. But you trolls really make sure to stand out.

I wonder what the threshold level is to determine if a crash has occurred. Obviously it will be based on how many g’s of deceleration it detects.

It's a combination of factors, not just G force. A sudden stop, a rollover, crash sounds detected by the mic and even barometric pressure typical in an interior car environment where an AirBag was inflated, are all factors collectively and individually taken into consideration. Machine learning was compiled to accurately predict an accident, rather than your phone falling off its holder in between the seats or you're riding a rollercoaster. Did we not all watch the same Apple event where this was detailed?

To quote you as you often try to show that you have ESP as well as being a "futurist"..."I called it".

Please spare us the sermons.

Well said.

I liken it to some people feeling powerless and crying for a wee bit of attention; something that was likely missing growing up. And a lack of empathy for others speaks volumes.
