I'm "downgrading" from the X to Xr. But to honest the new camera, longer battery life and A12 chip are an upgrade IMO. The screen resolution/panel type is moot to me. I use an iPad every day and I don't even notice a difference until I stare at the blacks levels between my iPad and X. Not a big deal at all. The only thing I might miss is 3D Touch. I use it to grab pics for websites but 3D pressing and getting a direct link to DL a pic I need.
Of course you are getting an Xr! From the moment they announced the name I thought of your forum name and thought of it as the iPhone Xiro!

I like that Nilay Patel’s review for the Verge starts out with nonsense:

https://www.theverge.com/2018/10/23/18011306/apple-iphone-xr-review-camera-screen-battery-price

How much is an OLED screen worth, he asks? $250.

Uh. Nilay. Dude.

Let’s not forget:

1.) Dual camera system.
2.) Stainless steel (yay) over aluminum (yuck).
3.) 4GB RAM instead of 3GB RAM
4.) Much better resolution/PPI/DPI.

That is all easily worth $250 to me. To make out it’s just the screen tech is just silly. I upgraded from a 1080p projector to a 4K projector recently. The main difference? The “screen.” And I paid a heck of a lot more for that resolution upgrade.

That’s not to say that the iPhone XR isn’t worth buying. Of course it is for a certain demographic (perhaps even the vast majority). But it’s not just OLED vs LCD, Nilay. You don’t get to call the rest of those differences “subtle.”

3D Touch is also one for those that care about it. But I think steel vs aluminum is an aesthetic preference, just like the colors. Personally I don’t like the shiny steel (my favorite was the brushed steel in the 4). As for ram, I’m not sure it will make a noticeable difference except for maybe the minority of power users and a few games down the line. The screen and camera are the main differentiators here with the latter being a toss up for some users. I think Gruber made an important point that went into my upgrade decision. If 64gb is too small for you, than the price difference becomes $350.

Similar thoughts about the Xr crossed my mind, not liking the OLED display in my X at all.

But I'd really miss the 2nd camera on the back. Not an option I use very often, but am glad it's there.

The XR reviewers were surprisingly subdued after all of the previous cautions to wait for it...

XS reviews: Most people should wait for the XR.
XR reviews: It's not really that much cheaper, so maybe get the XS.

Thanks guys. Thanks a lot.
I don't think any of them said that... Nor were they subdued... The biggest difference is the portrait from the rear camera from the tele lens... Maybe you should go back and watch the non-youtube reviews or better yet, read them.

A few of them went so far as to say people who bought the Xs or Xs Max overpaid...

Aluminum = yuck? Apple used aluminum on their phones for like 8 years and every year it was lauded (rightfully) as beautiful and premium.

And the 4GB vs 3GB RAM is pretty much a distinction without a difference for iOS. You may be able to have more apps/tabs stay open with more RAM, but you won't notice any performance difference day-to-day.
Correct. And when they moved from the stainless steel and glass of the iPhone 4 to the aluminum unibody of the iPhone 5, nobody called it less premium.

I didn't care for aluminum back then, and I still don't. That's why I have an SS Apple Watch, too. 4GB is not a distinction without a difference. The difference is obvious, to me. First, Music stays in the background pretty much permanently, now. With my iPhone X I would get into my car and it would always default to playing something else in CarPlay. On the XS? It remembers where I was. And yes, apps stay in the background much better, too. It's a difference, not just a distinction.

Actually, many of us did. :)

Fair. I don’t recall discussions about this but I trust your word. I still think the 4 had a better look and feel, but the 5 was a better, more practical design.

I'm like 95% sure that CarPlay issue was fixed with iOS 12, not with more RAM.

I'm looking at the XR as an upgrade from the SE (which is essentially a 6S in 5's clothing).

My only concern is the Lightning port.

I'm onto my second SE in two years... first one's battery failed after exactly one year. Second one is again giving my grief after exactly a year. Both exhibiting the same problem — trouble keeping an electrical/power connection at the Lightning port. I'm constantly finding that I need to wiggle the cable to get a connection.

I haven't read many reports of this issue, and I'm hoping it's limited to the port used on the SE.

I don't want to pay the "tax" of upgrading to another phone only to have the same problem again after a year when my current phone works perfectly except for this one issue.

Reviews for the iPhone XR went live this morning ahead of Friday's launch, and in a press release in the Apple Newsroom, Apple has highlighted reviews from several members of the media who were able to spend some time with the new iPhones.

Apple shared key passages from sites that include Digital Trends, Daring Fireball, Tom's Guide, Mashable, Engadget, The Verge, TechCrunch, CNN, Best Products, Techradar, and more.

Mashable, for example, called the iPhone XR the "Goldilocks of iPhones" with its large screen size, affordable price tag, "fantastic" cameras, and future-proof power in the form of the A12 Bionic chip.

Daring Fireball said that the iPhone XR is the best Apple's ever made "dollar for dollar," while TechCrunch compared the device to "a piece of nicely crafted jewelry" with a "depth and sparkle" unmatched by other iPhones.

CNN praised the impressive Portrait Mode shots the camera is able to capture, The Verge lauded the work Apple did to make the rounded corners of the LCD match the corners of the device, and Digital Trends called the iPhone XR "the iPhone to buy."

Apple focused on sharing positive elements of the iPhone XR reviews, but for the most part, reviews were positive due to the iPhone XR's affordable price tag and high-end components.

The biggest difference between the XR and the XS is the LCD display over the OLED display, and reviewers thought the iPhone XR's display was one of the best LCD displays and while not as good as the OLED, it's not noticeable as long as you're not holding the two devices next to one another.

Apple's full list of review selections can be seen in the article shared via the Apple Newsroom, while additional reviews can be found in our own review roundup.

The first iPhone XR pre-orders will arrive starting on Friday, October 26, the launch date for Apple's newest flagship device.

You forgot to mention besides the screens, the cameras in the two phones are also compleatly different, the dual lens in the XS is perhaps the most advanced ever incorporated into a device this size, and can easily match and beat images from any point and shoot style camera and rivals some DSLR cameras. The XR uses a camera that is 5+ years old.

If you’re like 99% of the other people who have intermittent Lightning connection issues, your problem is pocket lint getting down into the jack, preventing the plug from seating properly. Apple will clean it out for you, or you can do it yourself with a non-conductive implement like a toothpick. Be sure to get all of it, it can be packed in there very tight!

Sometimes my X exhibits the same issue. I think they all do to some extent. Luckily, I can charge it wirelessly as well, so there is no sole reliance on the lightning port.

I watched around twenty reviews and not a single one said the price difference was insignificant.

O gosh, I didn't know the XR uses a camera that is 5+ years old?

I thought it is identical to the XS less the telephoto lens?

It’s game in computational photography then 5 years old iPhones would best any Android phone.

I’d love to replace my 6s, but it comes down to that or upgrading my iPad Pro and Apple Watch... Apple has made it very tough to choose what to upgrade this year

I’ve had a similar experience twice. First time, it was dirt/dust built up inside. I cleaned it out and was fine.

Then, 1.5-2 years later, same thing happened, but I forgot that the cause the 1st time was dust :)rolleyes:), so I scoured the internet and found nothing. After 3-4 days, I “discovered” again that cleaning out with a toothpick fixed the issue.

Nice effort there...A+ trolling. :)

What is the data set for that? One particular retailer?

The XR is honestly a very solid phone. I love my XS Max and usually want the best of what Apple has to offer when it comes to phones, but this is a very nice device.
