zero 512GB models?

Or am I missing something here? :)
I don’t know why people forget these. I had to remind someone on AppleInsider about the 512GB models too. They’re what led me to call for a new record ASP for Q1FY2019. I guess people aren’t used to thinking about three storage SKUs.

But that model is also missing the 128GB 7/7 Plus and the 256GB 8/8 Plus as well.

Yes, and high rollers like me got the XS and XS max at the 512 configuration. XS max 512 gold was first to “sell out” or whatever, (slipped ship dates). This will make those ASP calculations too low I am thinking. :)

But it will not surprise me if the XR yellow and Red are the best sellers. They are nice! And “just right” “goldilocks” picks. Specs are very close to the more expensive models.

I'm "downgrading" from the X to Xr. But to honest the new camera, longer battery life and A12 chip are an upgrade IMO. The screen resolution/panel type is moot to me. I use an iPad every day and I don't even notice a difference until I stare at the blacks levels between my iPad and X. Not a big deal at all. The only thing I might miss is 3D Touch. I use it to grab pics for websites but 3D pressing and getting a direct link to DL a pic I need.
Hold the picture it works the same as 3D touch, I tried this on my iPhone X as I'm dropping to an XR for all the reasons you said and wanted to test this out myself.

And here I am, happy with my iPhone 6s Plus. If it lasts long enough, I’ll hold out until Bluetooth headphones have sound quality that rivals wired and for the micro-LED displays.

I just got my 6S Plus 128GB replaced under warranty. Brand new. With iOS 12 installed it feels like a new recent phone to me. I love it.

i dont agree to le0rsaire. the xs is premium and too expensive for people who want to replace their iPhone SE with a phone of the same size.

Apple is getting nervous. Lots of ads that basically show the phone spinning in slow motion. All I see in the ads is the inferior camera, notch and iffy colors.

I personally feel it's still too expensive. If it came in at the $650 mark I would sing more of its praises. A savvy shopper should get an X from old stock if possible, and if not, buy a used X with Apple care still on it; should have the same warranty then as a brand new device at less than the cost of the Xr.

Now, none of what I said is me claiming I know pricing or marketing better than Apple does. I just don't see the value of this device with what else is out there. Too many compromises, not enough price cut. In a few years we have gone from the base configuration of their flagship coming in around $650-700 to a watered down version of the flagship (do we want to call it a flagship even) with a $100 increased price tag. That's... not what I would call good value.

That ASP model also leaves out the higher storage tiers of 7 and 8 series. Otherwise I think there’s some reasonable assumptions there. I think the 512GB models will be maybe 10-12%, i.e. somewhere around 1 in 8 to 1 in 10.

Apple did a nice job in choosing what to de-feature to make that $250 lower price point. A significant part of their brilliance is the decision to make the XR display size larger than the $999 XS. Bigger phone for $250 less—that alone sells a good chunk of customers on the XR. And the colors.

The XR might actually be a little too attractive; that’s fine overall esp. for customer sat, but it may provide a slight headwind to ASP.

IT IS NOT EVEN 1080p...im really confused....

You Must be confused as you admitted, because the average consumer doesn’t care about a 1080 P display On a smart phone (Nor do Most even know the differences). The 828P display for the XR is almost equivalent to the iPhone 8 display. Apples LCD displays have been very reputable overtime.

From a customer point of view, Apple posting positive reviews is pointless.

People keeps saying that most customer won't know the difference which is true sort of, but more importantly it comes down to what sort of scaling artifacts will be visible in 720 content upscaled to 828 vs 1080p contents downscaled to 828. - When you scale, you will normally get visual artifacts. 8 plus is 1080p so has no scaling and hence no artifacts.

Also the iPhone XR sits between the 8 and 8 plus in terms of inches : 4.7 < 5.5 < 6.1" but the same as 8 in terms of ppi 326 < 326 < 401ppi

At the end of the day Apple cheaped out. The XR has larger pixels than the smaller 8 plus.

Btw, the battery replacement "promo" ends this year.
Even if the "promo" for older iPhones goes away, an $80 replacement battery with a likely 2 year life span is a lot cheaper than $750-$1300 or so for a new phone. And you still get a phone jack. I'd probably upgrade my 6S+ to this if it had the jack. Oh well ...

affordable price tag

Nice move, Apple. Effectively changing the meaning of words in the span of little over one year.

People who know how eyesight works don't care but precisely the average consumer does care because they are clueless and all they can compare is specs – number of pixels, cores, gigabytes RAM etc.

Maybe I’m not the first to say it, but do people realize the XR moves a lot less pixels (1.50M off screen and actual) compared to the XS (2.75M off screen and actual) and the old Plus (2.70M off screen, then downscaled)?

3GB is a beast of a RAM for a retina 2x.
To have the same RAM-to-pixels ratio, the XS should have 5.5GB, not just 4GB.

So there you have it, the XR has actually more RAM “for the job”.

(I know pixels aren’t the full picture in terms of RAM usage, but they’re a huge deal, ask to iphone 6+ owners or ipad air1 owners constantly losing Safari tabs because of RAM flush, their devices having just 1GB with massive resolutions)

Also do people realize the XR works with the same number of logical points of an XS Max, making it a “retina 2x version of an XS Max”?

My situation is this.
I have a 6s (like many it looks) and am happy with it. I got it second hand like new, almost unused for 450€ three years ago.
The new X iPhones are very interesting but all too expensive for me. I would spend up to 500€ for one.
Apples answer is an iPhone 7 or 8 for my price range but I’m not interested in those as my 6s covers those phones features mostly. Also I want to keep ForceTouch.
Apple doesn’t pick me up here.
I think I’m not alone in this situation.
And no I’m not interested in anything android.
I’ll probably have to buy a used X in a year or two.

iPhone 8 64GB is approaching your price point.
Grab one before it’s too late, sit down and be amused watching people twist their thumbs to reach the control center in the upper corner or being unable to unlock their phone off angle.

I'm looking at the XR as an upgrade from the SE (which is essentially a 6S in 5's clothing).

My only concern is the Lightning port.

I'm onto my second SE in two years... first one's battery failed after exactly one year. Second one is again giving my grief after exactly a year. Both exhibiting the same problem — trouble keeping an electrical/power connection at the Lightning port. I'm constantly finding that I need to wiggle the cable to get a connection.

I haven't read many reports of this issue, and I'm hoping it's limited to the port used on the SE.
Sorry for uninvited comment - but that sounds a lot like fluff/lint in the port. I used to get that all the time on my 6+ but not my other iphones for some reason. I used to use a needle to (very) carefully remove compacted gunk every few months.. I really don't understand how/why some phones get this when put through the same use/pockets etc and others don't.

On the positive side the XR supports wireless charging so you might not need to use the lightning port much anyway?

Also I think from the 7 or 8 up they’re using a new stronger port that may also be less sensitive to pocket lint. And yes the 6+ gave me huge headaches for that too, so there may be something up with the 6/6+ in particular. That’s a jinxed generation (too little RAM, delicate lightning port, softer aluminum, touch disease, etc.)

Same here, iPhone SE 128GB, brand new for 380 Euros. The 6s (or 7 then) was already too big for me, coming from a 4S.

I look at the Xr and see an iPad micro, way too big for a pocket, 2 handed operation, Batterie life that should approach my SE, a “way” better camera (I am very happy with my camera) that sticks out the back, no touch ID, no home button, no Phone jack, 1 (one) massive GB more Ram (doooh) for twice the money? Really? Lets wait for march, maybe they come to there senses and produce a real iPhone again, worthy of replacing the SE. Otherwise the SE has to go on with iOS 13,14......

I just had a eureka moment about one particular aspect of the XR, maybe minor for some, but still:

Wouldn’t thicker bezels (compared to XS) make it easier to execute swipe-from-the-border touch gestures when using a case with a raised lip?

Yeah, Apple primed their customers for the 650 entry level. 750 as the entry level? plus a compromised version. Ok.

Pricing should be

Entry level
XR $650
XS $850
XS Max $950

also cheaper memory upgrades.
Upgrading from 64 GB to 512 GB is 350.

They are trying to squeeze out as much profit on upgrades on memory too.

I acquired an iPhone 7 2 month ago to replace my broken SE.

And I'm already used to 3D touch but not to the size. While its nice to have a larger screen, handling (especially typing) it with one hand is really the absolute limit. I think I'll get used to it, as time goes by, but I feel more strain in the hand.

Now I'm really glad I didnt wait for the Xr, even though it looks georgeous. Performance on these devices doesnt concern me one bit, I only use these things for browsing, mail, phone and texting, sometimes pictures. The 7 is plenty fast and totally smooth in iOS 12 (The SE already was). But its manily the size and the omission of 3D touch make the Xr a no go for me.
