Not all women menstruate. I'm the perfect example :)

Destigmatize something that happens to half the world population? I wonder if that's what get clicks/views. Make a stupid clickbait title and wait for people to respond to this nonsense. Do not feed the troll.

This is BS big time. Menstruation has not been a taboo in the civilized world for some decades now. It may be still a thing in very poor rural areas in third world countries, but these people dont have Apple Watches anyway. Menstruation is as natural as breastfeeding, sexual relationships, masturbation and so on, which have existed since the beginning of time. Im OK to see more studies aimed to improve health, but if a study is made for the sole purposes of destigmatizing something that is not stigmatized in the developed world, then it is pure activism and nothing else.
Isn’t public breastfeeding illegal in the US?

So that I don't have this banned, I will respond to some of the above posts in a general way:

Yes, even in the US there are groups who stigmatize periods, and women during periods are restricted from what they are allowed to do and have to go to a certain place once a month.

I don't think Apple's study will do anything to change that. But yes, there is stigma.

I apologize if this is too vague, but I have found I can't say truthful things without it being deleted.
Exactly, some here think the US population is homogeneous, even in the west there are lots of groups that stigmatise periods.

I can't believe I have to actually break this down.

There is and always will be a 'stigma' with bodily fluids of strangers that are observed. Except it's not a stigma, one that writes off an entire population for their gender, its an adverse reaction to publicly displayed bodily fluids.

I periodically get nose bleeds from dry air, and no I don't do drugs + I don't have a deviated septum

My first and really only response is to clog up my nostril with a packed piece of tissue paper and fix it and minimize it. It's not to ask all of society to change.

And I'm not thrown off or surprised when people observe I do have a huge piece of tissue paper clogging up my nostril.

Women get periods. That's perfectly fine and normal and healthy. If someone is bleeding through white capris in public on public transportation for example, yeah I don't really find that a neutral event and I would prefer to not have to look at it to be entirely frank. I think many women would probably feel exactly the same, as people who endure periods themselves.

Doesn't mean that person who had an accident is terrible or mistakes don't happen. But it is a natural response to not want to see it if given the option.

When people projectile sneeze in a small space, independent of their ethnicity or gender or any of the rest of it, I really don't take too kindly to it

FORTUNATELY - products also exist that can minimize having to witness such a thing in the first place. Like tampons.

Who would've guessed - an entire industry makes a boatload of money, for being the solution to this very event!
I can’t believe you thought it was your place to break down a subject that you don’t personally experience

That's not really what I was talking about. I don't think I could talk about it unless this were under PRSI.

Believe it.

im allowed to have an opinion has nothing to do with “my place”. And I don’t need your permission. Thanks though for your concern it’s been noted and immediately discarded.

Never suggested you needed my permission. Just can’t believe you see yourself as someone whose opinion on a subject you don’t know personally is worth spilling so many ill-informed keystrokes over.

again— believe it. Better yet, Get over it.

As a human with a brain and eyes I’m allowed to have an opinion.

I never claimed to physically know what menstruation feels like, so that’s weird to say it’s not my place... but I am allowed to state that displays of bodily fluids from strangers is grotesque to me because it is. In any form from any person. Doesn’t mean I hold animus against the opposite sex whatsoever.

if that’s upsetting, the concept that someone holds a differing view, that’s a personal problem

It’s not even that you don’t know what it’s physically like. You don’t know what it’s socially like, either. We are talking about stigma, not physiology. You’re completely out of your depths and yet you feel it’s your place to begrudgingly have to step in and explain the situation. Get over yourself.

and I’m saying strangers publicly excreting blood, when there are products and solutions that prevent this, is visually and conceptually repulsive. And not that mistakes don’t or can’t happen.

*Not* women having periods monthly, etc. and that’s something they didn’t have a say over. there is no stigma over menstruations by themselves. That’s absurd

“completely out of my depths” you’re just full of condescension and hostility and it’s gonna be tough to continue to want to engage while you’re up in arms over virtually nothing.

I know what humility is like and I know how to prevent/minimize it. For example I don’t sneeze all over my hand and then wave at people and say “hey hey look at my snot I did a thing”

That’s just a human thing.

I had a hunch you’d offer nothing, and you certainly followed through. For someone familiar with the topic, you sure do offer up a load...of nothing.
You’re getting back what you gave. No one owes you anything. You want to live in this world in ignorance, that’s up to you. People will continue to point it out to you, but don’t expect for one second it’s anyone’s job to do the work for you.

'Destigmatize Menstruation'

what the..?!

First world issues?
Sorry, it’s mostly not a first world issue at all. Not realizing that it’s a problem - THAT is a first world issue.

For example, in Venezuela, many women are forced to sleep in huts for the duration of their menstruation. In rural Ghana, menstruating women are forbidden from entering a house with a man or cooking food. Many young women don’t have access to any type of sanitary pad, which can cause them to miss school and cause them to be 70% more likely to have reproductive tract infections.

In addition, in Kenya, studies have shown that girls will miss an average of four days of school each month — adding up to about 20% of the school year. Women face discrimination, harassment, and are looked down upon because of menstruation, as it is seen as a form of weakness rather than a necessary biological function.
Full article was posted earlier in the thread.

Good thing Apple is actively educating people about this issue. From the posts I see in this thread, the awareness level about this is very low.

I am curious now.

I live in the US and have never heard of these things.

Does it have to do with bears?

If you’re genuinely curious, may I suggest you read a bit on the topic? Maybe these can get you started.

You think this is about encouraging women to expose their menstrual fluids to you? No wonder you’re confused.

Define the “stigma” which no one seems to be able to... swaths of men hating women for something not in their control?

THATS ABSURD. Any rational person would disavow. And it’s not something I believe to be true. Manufactured concern with likely some fringe 0.0001% statistically inconsequential amount that does believe that ... because people are stupid and allowed to have their own views, because of free will. But so what? Even if 5 people hold this opinion irrationally is it really a mainstream stigma worth acknowledging and 'overcoming'? Or is it manufactured like I claimed from the beginning?

Teenagers not knowing how to purchase and use tampons? That’s a parenting educational opportunity, NOT a stigma of society and not for big tech to solve.

What in the hell is going on here? Am I in the twilight zone?

Transient, forgettable outrage has become so fashionable and it has turned society into an unrecognizable clown circus and its also squelched real issues when they do arise because we're so consumed by total and utter nonsense.
