Meanwhile, in the conference call, Apple executives repeated referred to a "product transition" that may affect Q4 revenue numbers. Typically, "product transitions" represent existing product line revisions. In this case, the MacBook and MacBook Pro have been widely expected to be revised in the coming months with both models starting to approach the end of their lifecycles. Intel has conveniently released a new processor and chipset that could be used in the new Apple laptops.
YAY! Q4 revenue is Q3 calendar, right?

Apple also described their formula of introducing "state of the art new products at prices their competitors can't match". They describe that these new products introduce new "technologies and features" (like the iPhone) justifying their initial higher prices. Over time, they expect to to take advantage of scale and engineering to drive prices down. Apple suggested that they would follow this formula again and are "very excited" about what they have in their new product pipeline. Rumors have suggested that Apple may introduce a 12" or 13" Mac tablet later this year (September or October). Another possibility include rumors of a smaller PDA-like device that is 1.5x larger than the existing iPhone.
iWrite iWrite iWrite iWrite!!!! Finally! :D

So that would mean that the iPhone technologies are "good" enough so that they can be extended to a mini-tablet? Or that the MacBook Air technologies are "good" enough so they can be extended to the MacBook Pro and MacBook?

I would believe the AppleInsider "1.5x iPhone" more than the tablet one, as AppleInsider has a fairly accurate rumor record.

You better believe it! :D

PDA with no phone?

I don't see them introducing a product between the iphone and macbook, it'd compromise the sales of both.
A bloated product line up is not what they need.

Maybe it will be a PDA like device with no "phone"

I just bought a MacBookAir and two new 3G iPhones so p-l-e-a-s-e :apple: don't tempt me with a hot new purchase!

My guess is margins will fall because Apple is going to get more price competitive. They said they don't like competitors hiding underneath their initial pricepoints.

Could this mean a price reduction as Apple 'take advantage of scale and engineering to drive prices down' in their notebook range? I hope so :D

My money is on new iPod Touch models including one with a much bigger screen, GPS, and built-in microphone/video camera for portable iChat. Resolution should be around 800x600.
This has to be a new product. Not just a redo of an existing product. Apple said the forward guidance was lower due to money being spent on the new product.

Spend a lot on R&D then make it up as they sell more of them.
This is no new Macbook. It's a completely new product.
Either a 13" MacBook Pro, mid-range tower Mac or a Mac tablet?

I'm thinking a mini-tablet (as AppleInsider reported), running iPhone OS on a ~5.5" 720*480 display. Mobile versions of iLife and iWork included.

I agree with you. Every year it's "excitement" about "great products in the pipeline."

But my guess on the "transition" is to more products for OS X Touch
Totally agree. I can see the "iWrite" coming in two sizes: ~5.5" and ~8".

What I think:
1. Aluminium Montevina MacBook with LED display and Multi-Touch trackpad
2. Re-designed MacBook Pro with Quad Core
3. Mac Tablet

I'm tellin ya it's a new HD Cinema Display. One that may well be 42" with built in WiFi and Snow Leopard.

Controlled with the Remote app. or the touch of your finger.

I'm usually one year ahead in predictions and I've been predicting this for a while.
;)

Steve Jobs first suggests in the initial press release that Apple is "busy finishing several more wonderful new products to launch in the coming months."

Eh, Jobs says this every year and then like 1 new product comes out.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8100/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

It has begun!

I'll steer a slighty different way and say that a new major product will be a large touchscreen that you can dock your iPod Touch or iPhone into and will allow for handwriting recognition and an increased number of features. But that's just some random thought from that old Apple patent.

I think by transition they mean that the future is Touch, and they're going to start the transition. First, they'll introduce a touch screen MacBook, then eventually an iMac, etc. Bring it on!!

Or, maybe by innovation, they mean "copy and paste" on iPhone!! lol

A 5' (foot) iPhone/iPod/PDA! Dude you must have huge pockets! ;):D:apple:

I can imagine a huge brouhaha when Apple designers misunderstand Steve Jobs specs and introduce their new 5 foot tall touch tablet. (just like Spinal Tap but in reverse.)

Then Schiller goes, "I have a practical question to ask...So are we releasing this product tomorrow?"

Any chance that this "product transition" will effect the iMac line at all? Maybe price drops? I don't know. Any theories?
