Fine, as long as it is an option for you to opt out of and not a lack of availability for people that want optical.

I suspect they'll expand on the technology that allows a MacBook Air to hook into the optical drive of a nearby PC or Mac. Or if you still need access to optical media all the time...

Something as simple as a MacBook Pro refresh will do quite nicely for me.

I can see Steve heading the way of :apple:TV again. I think this is his baby as much as the iPhone is, a way to get rid of physical media and go digital in everything. Movies, music, videos, family albums, .Me web galleries all exist in the :apple:TV. Now to fight off the Amazon/Netflix crowd this is an obvious transition. Apple has been at the forefront of sales for music for some time now, and movies will only follow suit if there is better implementation that can transition from your computer to the TV in your living room. Throw in a TV tuner where you can record shows and you are set.

Also for this reason they won't head in the direction of a 42" touch screen. This is way too impractical. How can you focus on a screen that big when you're close enough to run your hands all over it? I can see it in stores as some sort of display, but not in a typical household.
:apple:TV updates. MB/MBP Case redesigns. Removal of Optical Drives, but make a USB powered one available for $49.

PDA = iphone/ipod touch. No reason to add another device that small into the mix, they would overlap in too many ways.

If Apple releases a new tablet I would expect it would replace the iPod Touch. And possibly have 3G built in (not to be held to your ear like a phone - but for data as well as calls via headphone (wired or wireless) and possibly video calls).

But I don't think that's possible. AppleInsider says Apple said their gross margins would decrease from 35% to 30%. They would have to sell SO many iTablets at a lower margin to have that kind of effect... that I think it has to be much broader.

The only theories that make sense to me are
1) HUGE numbers of VERY cheap current AppleTVs (have they got a stock pile?) along with fairly cheap new AppleTVs (whatever that entails.. dvr?).
2) Touch screens in iMacs, Laptops, and Cinema Displays.

Either could also lock out competitors.
Touch screens seems far more likely to me - it'd increase the construction cost of all the Macs so if Apple doesn't change their sale price then it'll knock down their margins.

ps.
My initial thought is that I'd barely use Touch Screens. But most people thought that about a mouse. It actually allowed and required a new type of interaction to make any sense. So if Apple does this (whether now or later) it'll be interesting to see how they make OS wide support as well as iLife and iWork (and it wouldn't replace the current mouse/trackpad... it'd be an extra)

Tablet Tablet Tablet

We're going to see a tablet with a 10 inch diagonal. 16x9 format. n wifi. It has to be priced under $1K to sell, so margin is low. Will they include the docking station for that price? I say yes. Better include BT keyboard availability. I'm buying.

AND/OR we'll see the nano touch. This will be the size of ipod nano, but all screen. NO wifi, but since it's all screen, you can watch a movie on it. Same price as current nano, lower margin.

good but i hope it's worth it

i'm hoping to get that new macbook pro when it comes out. i hope they upgrade this thing enough or design it enough for me to decide it's worth it. right now i have a blackbook the latest model and i'll be selling it privately (i just got it too) to get that new design if it's worth it (i want the bigger screen anyway) otherwise i might feel kind of stupid throwing in more cash just for a newer design, and specs that are better but hard to notice to a pretty much average computer user, you know?

My guess is margins will fall because Apple is going to get more price competitive. They said they don't like competitors hiding underneath their initial pricepoints.

At least someone else in here has a little common sense. It's really not that big of a mystery lol.

It will be a new Apple TV set top, with Tivo type functions (seen in previous patent apps) and possible sling box type function to iphone. I believe this because it would be a transitional product that has more mass product appeal that would directly effect the cost margins at that volumn of sales. The price point will drop to better the new Netflix/Amazon boxes that are showing up at bargin market share grabing prices. The tivo and sling functions would best the other boxes out there right now in price and function. This also explains why Apple wont let sling box in as an apple app for the iphone. Apple TV with tivo and sling brings together all their software and hardware, Movies (itunes) to stream to iPhone, connected to the livingroom as well, with a larger mass market appeal for a catagory of product that has yet been exploited effectively by competition. A new laptop would still command top margins.

I really hope you are right and it does make sense. I would LOVE it even if I did just buy my Apple TV a few months ago. However just lowering prices on the laptops etc. seems pretty logical, but it could be a combination of the two.

As one...

who has been using Macs since they first appeared, I would hope that Apple would produce a Newton sized PDA/iPhone/UMM (UMM=UltraMobileMac©®™) with a screen that I can read, thank you very much.

oh man PLEASE apple mini-tablet!

I SECOND THAT!!!!!!!!!:D

AND a thinner cooler MacMini!! Though if they are discontinuing the MacMini I have to buy one cause it was one of my favorite Macs.

I've had Almost all of the major releases of Macs... My favorite ones : PowerMac (Performa) 6500, G3, G4, I had a G5 but it was the first one and it was a hunk of metal that was CURSED! Then the iMac Lap was amazing and my MacMini. Now I have a MacBook Pro.

:/

Apple will never ditch the combo drive. They need a crippling device for the marketing department. I am surprised they went to USB 2.

All the people posting about internal optical drives are wrong. Optical drives will be network access only and file sharing will be by over the air networks.

Rocketman

I thought they did with the MBA, and just offered it as an extra option.

Quad-Cores in Q4? LED in ACDs?

The article doesn't give a really good reason why those transitions would impact the financials.

Why would a Macbook or Macbook Pro transition lead to hit on Apples revenue in Q4? A transition like the Intel transition or from MacOS 9 to MacOS X - there I can understand a hit.

Maybe they assume the new products are not appealing enough for the customers in the beginning, because they are too strange ? Like a Touch Mac ?

Intel has stated that quad-core CPUs will be available within the next 30 days, but the pricing starts around $1390 USD. Perhaps Apple is planning to introduce a quad-core laptop for around $3000 - $3500 this fall. The only other option that would make sense would be LED backlit ACDs. They also are very expensive, and perhaps Apple is preparing high-end displays for a cost lower than the competition. Of course, it could be something else, but I am hoping for at least one of these two, if not both.

P.S. - Sorry if it has already been said, but I haven't read all 8 pages yet.

The quad-core is $1038. It's 45 W, too hot for the MacBook Pro. A 35 W slower quad-core for $851 is rumored to come out in Q4 2008, but since its GHz is so low (2.27 GHz), it may not go in the MacBook Pro.

iVid

Handheld video with a iPod built-in. Video can be uploaded via Wi-Fi, stored and managed in iTunes and/or Apple TV.

User-generated video content for the masses. And your grandparents.

Why is there no video recording on iPhones? Hmmmmm.

i've been interested in the flip for a while now, but if apple released their own version, i'd probably get that instead (provided the price was right).

i don't think something like that would be released anytime soon though...

Next coming months....

Wonder if Snow Leopard will be out around macworld instead of "in about a year".... Doubt it, they need something for the Dev conference....

Please let it be a new mini and a sub-$1000 laptop that is worth something... I have the need for a mini (wife needs a new desktop, but has no need for the power of an imac (web, chat rooms, email, iwork, and a coupld of small bible programs), and I know 3 people who want a macbook, but are a little strapped for cash right now.....

Rumors, wishes, plus we are still about 6 months from macworld. Other than the mini, I think I have everything I want right now....

iphone nano no-no

Their problem currently is that the iphone price is so low, they can't meet demand. So, price a nano at 0$? No way. You may see an iphone nano in 12 months, after we're all sated on 3G. We still have 40 countries of 3G rollout to go. There will be no new iphone models till sales level off and supply meets demand.

Oh God no, not the flip..... They showed one of those a little while ago on our local news. Do not use it indoors, the light would be too low. I have an Optimus version of the flip and both of them rated badly indoors and mediocre outside. Onething that was bad was the digial zoom. It is just like sooming a picture on your computer (got grainy). you need something with atleast 32X opticle zoom.
