I believe the revolving door at Apple serves its own purpose. They are getting what they need at certain stages of the project and then new blood provides other layers. It makes sense as they have a fraction of the staff other auto companies have dedicated to this industry. They are also working in secret so many don’t get to see all of the pieces at once.

I suspect the Apple Car is likely not gonna show up until 2037. Apple has too much to learn and figure out before they enter this category successfully. Because so many cars these days depend on chips and use a lot of computing, they likely have that figured out. But I think the bigger picture of building a 'car' and also bringing differentiation: autonomous, building the charging network, safety, ease of use, comfortable, distribution, pricing and competing with others who frankly are ahead; makes me think Apple has their work cut out for them. I wish them all the best though, but an EV from Apple is likely not gonna be my first. Not because of issues per say, its just gonna take a long time to come to market and it will be ridiculously expensive because they will want to recoup a lot of the R&D that went into developing it.

My unrealistic wish: buy porsche from volkswagen, keep the car team and bring sanity to their HMI. Unlike BMW, porsche is weak with their car infotainment and displays but they bring excellent vehicle engineering. Would be good synergy. That gives them the excellent taycan models of EVs of course.

Oh Apple.
Sometimes the jokes just write themselves. 🙂

That being said, it is going to be interesting to see what they do come up with.

I doubt that it'll be in my lifetime or (if I am still kicking around) something many of us could afford.

This is actually good news. A seasoned executive who oversaw the design of a high end performance vehicle such as Lamborghini will bring a lot of detail oriented experienced to the plate and will benefit Apple in the long run.

Just because he worked for Lamborghini doesn't mean Apple car is going to be insanely expensive.
Apple for the most part is all about "consumer" oriented products not boutique ones.

Earlier this month, The Information's Wayne Ma reported that Apple's vehicle design goals included four seats facing inwards, a curved ceiling that resembles the roof on a Volkswagen Beetle, and a trunk that automatically rises for easy access. The report also claimed Apple has pushed for exemptions from the U.S.'s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to release a vehicle without a steering wheel and brake pedal.

Gurman and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo have both claimed that Apple aims to begin mass production of the vehicle by 2025, but the project has faced numerous leadership changes and other technical challenges, so the launch timeframe may continue to be pushed back.

There's absolutely no way these things are possible by 2025. I would still even be shocked if they happened by 2030. I love Apple products, but self-driving cars still have a long way to go before hitting level 5—even for companies that have been actively in the game for a long time. And that's to say nothing of the speed of governmental regulations standing in the way. That said, I have no doubt Apple's product would push the industry forward and I look forward to seeing what they come up with.

LOL ... no steering wheel, no pedals but a Lamborghini veteran ... definitely no Apple car in the next 10-15 years

As long as it is a manual drive car with digital assist and not a digital full self driving car.

There is no software company that makes bug free crash free software. Apple with all its talent and money has ****ed up the firmware of many recent devices and peripherals.
Quoting the article: "to release a vehicle without a steering wheel and brake pedal"

I'm still doubtful that we will every see a proper Apple Car - especially with the CarPlay announcement at this years WWDC. The updated CarPlay interface seems to fill the need for an Apple Car for most people.

Apple, the king of minimalism, hires from Lamborghini, the king of…well, just look at their cars. Not only design, but what do vehicle systems of yesteryear have to do with where auto is going? I hope this guy is a great leader, because I really don’t get how his experiences in cars is right for this job.

Beep, beep, who got my keys to my Apple, vrrrrrrrrrr. Hey this could be Apple's first real attempt at building the car in the open without us realizing:

That's interesting but I feel like this is going to be one of the reasons why Apple Car will be extra expensive. Also, another problem is I feel like Apple is only working on CarPlay and the software of an Apple Car. The hardware is behind.

Executives and engineers come and go in any large company all these comings and goings means nothing. We really don't know anything about the timeline planned and what's the real scope or status of the project.

Based on experience from other companies the biggest problem could end up being the software implementing autonomy,- an almost insurmountable problem. Perhaps they could ease this problem by only targeting the first version for specific routes, like shuttle taxis for airports/hotels, etc?

Is there anything productive to say about the ongoing saga of the forever car of the future?

It depends upon what one's objective is. If it's an opportunity to have a good bash at Apple with a snarky juvenile burn or comment, then in my opinion, as an adult, no.

If instead it's to discuss the possibilities of an Apple-branded car, then of course. But that would require a modicum of curiosity and thinking ahead.

Sadly, for many, it's much easier to sling some snark and call it a day.

You're on an internet forum where anyone can sign up and post anonymously. Of course there's going to be snark lol

I feel like Apple has forgotten that its roots are in a company that empowers by giving people new tools that redefine potential, not simply a luxury consumer electronics company. While I have little doubt Apple could make a car that is much nicer than others, I don't understand the purpose of entering this market. Everyone is playing essentially the same game here, and none of it is a true tool for empowering mere mortals. There's so much opportunity to do something orthogonal to what every consumer electronics company is doing; this ain't it. If this is Apple today, someone needs to found a new Apple.

I like Apple Car Play, but I'd rather not have the rest of my car's interface look like a giant iPhone. Oh, and at least some physical knobs and dials, please.
