I just found out early today hat he was leaving anandtech, his review was the one I always couldn't wait for, including the verges, whenever a new major device came out, I was absolutely shocked when I read he was leaving, like when Joshua tupolsky left Engadget, apple hiring him is fantastic news, he knows his stuff and apple could only benefit from his presence for hopefully years to come

But.... I thought we were only gonna hire women because we need to be more diverse and stuff...???? What of our diversity Apple? WHAT OF OUR DIVERSITYYYYYYYY?!?!?!

Ef diversity! Apple needs talent. Who cares what color their skin is or who they choose to do the nasty with.

No more bad press about 1 GB RAM or reasonably solid justifications of performance implications of processor architecture and floor-plans. Pretty much everyone in the tech industry used to cite this guy - now their main source has been cut off.

Well played, Apple.. Well played! :apple:

This is unexpected and quite interesting. I always love reading his in-depth reviews. Really smart guy who knows the tech inside and out. I wonder if he will lead the initiative that we've been hearing about—and starting to see—inside Apple that will be promoting more open dialog with the public and developers. Recently Apple started that blog for developers, and their long-time PR chief has recently retired. The tone of WWDC was certainly different this year. I could see Anand being excellent on-stage explaining the more complicated parts of OS X and iOS in a way that is more relatable and easy to understand.

I bet Gruber is super jelly right now.

That's really underestimating Shimpi's potential value to Apple. The guy is smart, knows tech and is respected in the Apple community. I see Apple benefiting from this.

He's respected in the tech community not just Apple. I am really excited to see what he's role at Apple will be.

Really amazing, I really enjoy reading anything that he posts on Anand. Great writing style, makes even the most complex technologies easy to understand. I hope he has a great position at Apple...he has a ton of potential.

Begs the question: what will his role be?

New chief iOS designer, at least.

I don't get this joke....

Anand is a hardware guy that has ran a hardware site for 17.5 years... why the ****** would Apple NOT want to use his expertise in that area?
And instead put him in an area that he presumably knows nothing about & they already have a competent employee handling (Sir Ives).

Er... um... what a surprise! That's pretty awesome. I'm also wondering what on earth his role will be. I guess we'll find out in the coming months... hopefully...

That's very cool. He will be missed at the site, though. :(

I'm sure that Apple will be better for having him on the team, but this leaves a huge vacuum for tech consumers looking for factual, accurate, and unbiased information.

I'm torn between the benefits to Apple and Anand - congratulations for all his hard work for the Apple community - and the loss of a smart independent examination of Apple technology.

This may be a loss the community can't sustain. Who now is going to tell us the difference between a Retina Air screen and a Retina Mini screen, Air & Fire screens, or the performance hits in 2014 Mac models across the board? To name just a few…

I can't help but think we'd do better with the likes of Anand outside the tent, rather than inside. I'd always thought that no matter how smart he is, Apple's engineers were smarter - now I'm bothered on both counts.

The Retina review is a symptom of what was happening to Anandtech - all of a sudden, not so useful to potential buyers. This move has been a long time coming & what happened before the announcement is more concerning to me than any joy for Anand and Apple at gaining someone of immense potential. Potential does not guarantee results, especially the results someone outside Apple may be hoping for.

Try to remain positive. This is very good news for Apple. Somebody buy Anand a truth to power t-shirt, please. For his protection and ours.

Agreed there. I am very saddened by the news in a way because his reviews were like the best of all reviews, I always read each one several times in microscopic detail. But on the other hand I am sure his feedback will push Apple in an even better direction, so this can only mean good things for Apple connoisseurs.

I don't know too much about Anand except that he was a prominent tech journalist. Now what I'm wondering is what possible roll he could serve at Apple. Does Anand have the expertise to actually help engineer/develop products or is he simply a writer?

Begs the question: what will his role be?

I'm going to guess he will be in some kind of "competitive analysis" role. Apple had been faulted recently for falling behind the rapid innovation of Android and other platforms. One of Anand's strengths is candidly figuring out the pros and cons of competing systems. This, plus his journalistic experience seeing where the trends are going, makes him valuable for keeping Apple honest. I'd hire him at Apple just to tell stubborn product developers where their usual thinking is falling short of the competition.
