When Steve Jobs talked about hiring A+ people, Anand Lal Shimpi is the embodiment of what he meant. The tech world has just lost the finest reviewer we've ever known.

Brought on board to do controlled leakage of 'mockups' so that what we see before the keynote is some uglier version of the item being released, rather than the actual ugly item that is being released (think iPhone 6 bandgate) :p

I haven't warmed to Tim Cook at all, but my hat's off to him for this. With Anand going over the next iPhone, iWatch, iPads and Macs with a fine toothed come, microscope and a radiation detector they're going to excel in all the little details that make these products perfect. He's excellent at assessing the things we wouldn't think or know to pay attention to.

Excellent news for Apple. Anand was a fantastic tech analyst, his reviews and insights were by far the best in the business. I'm sure he will do great things for Apple.

I don't know too much about Anand except that he was a prominent tech journalist. Now what I'm wondering is what possible roll he could serve at Apple. Does Anand have the expertise to actually help engineer/develop products or is he simply a writer?

He has a degree in electrical engineering but they have people to fill those roles. I'm sure he'll be doing some kind of critiquing of product components before the designs are approved. His focus is usually how the little details make or break the big picture.

Unexpected.

Not really. I just think Apple ran out of ideas internally and now their fishing for talent outside the company. Beats anyone? Again, Steve was the mastermind behind Apple. With him gone their stuck releasing iPhones and iPads. Their laptop and desktop category is stale as year old bread and Apple tv is treated like a hobby project.
Actually I wouldn't mind Anand replacing Tim Cook. I've been reading Anand's articles for years and he knows what the hell he is talking about. Maybe he can talk Tim out of releasing a flagship product with only 1GB of ram.
And this move was 1000x better than buying Beats. Should have gave Anand the money and he wound designed headphones and speakers from the ground up.

Competitive analysis. Market forecasting.

I'm going to guess he will be in some kind of "competitive analysis" role. Apple had been faulted recently for falling behind the rapid innovation of Android and other platforms. One of Anand's strengths is candidly figuring out the pros and cons of competing systems. This, plus his journalistic experience seeing where the trends are going, makes him valuable for keeping Apple honest. I'd hire him at Apple just to tell stubborn product developers where their usual thinking is falling short of the competition.

"Apple had been faulted recently for falling behind Android"

Laugh my ass off!! Apple has been called out since the iPhone 4s was release. Stupid "S" models allowed Android to catch up. And don't get me started on the iPhone C. And tell someone at Apple that $500 tablets don't sale like hotcakes anymore. Plus we have phones that match iPhone 5s for a fraction of the cost. Falling behind:eek:

And yet Apple hires him? So either Apple is dumb or you are a genius!

But they didn't hire him (surely) to do something he doesn't know how to do. They probably hired him in some sort of media relations capacity, for competitive analysis, for analysis of component suppliers, or the like. Stuff he's demonstrated an ability to do.

AnandTech was the best site ever when it came to reviews. Deep and precise.

I would trust that site's reviews over any other.

So Anand left, will they change the site's name?

In his reviews on Apple notebook computers, Anand has shown empathy for the minority of users who need truly, non-reflective screens, e.g. matte or anti-glare screens, and not just less-reflective mirrors. I therefore hope he puts a good word in to Tim and Jony to stop the maddness of removing anti-glare screens from the Apple lineup.

For every person who insists that they love the glossy colors and that glossy is fine for them, remember, one size does not fit all. There are many people that require anti-glare screens to whom Apple has given them the finger.

He's Indian and Iranian.

So your comment wasn't just stupid; it doesn't make any sense.

Although, based on Apple's reported diversity information being Indian would put him in the "Asian" category, which is currently unrepresentative of national demographics at 23% of the company for technical jobs vs 4.7% in the general population.

Anandtech went downhill some when they started having a lot of stuff from DailyTech (the National Enquirer of tech blogging).

That said, this is a real coup. Anand is VERY knowledgeable and indeed has actually improved technology from his perch as a tech writer because he knows the inner working of things so well (witness how he actually pinpointed the cause for the random read/write issues on the first wave of SSDs - OEMs used his analytical work to address the problems). Add in that he obviously has a lot of inside connections with players like Intel and the value to Apple is large here.

Nice!

Since he's one of the smartest tech journalist that covered Apple devices, hopefully he can actually add 2GB RAM and a much better battery to iDevices if he works in that department.

Maybe he will write a nice suite of tests for CPU's, SSD's, camera lenses and fix the horrendous MacBook Pro video card situation.

Whoa, didn't see this coming. Can't imagine what he's doing with Apple, but I've always really enjoyed his reviews so I'm sure it'll be good, whatever it is.

Maybe now we can finally get that rmbp review... trolololololo XD
Hope he does some awesome things at apple

Is it really a good match for him? Now he gets to see the ugly business internals of a massive company answering only to shareholders... Now he's effectively part of a company whose focus is on planned obsolescence, withholding features just to make you buy new every year. Is it really fun? I thought taking an objective stance of technology and calling out things for what they really are would feel more fulfilling.
