While he is a respected tech journalist his reach to the general consumer public is minimal at best. If Apple had problems that buying him off would help with, buying him off wouldn't be nearly enough to work.

Anand has the education to back up his years of blogging... His website paid for his Engineering degree. I do see this a little bit like a company hiring Linus though. What his hobby is became so big that what he's actually degreed in and works for money gets overshadowed. It will be interesting to see if he is in technical, executive, or PR tracks.

But.... I thought we were only gonna hire women because we need to be more diverse and stuff...???? What of our diversity Apple? WHAT OF OUR DIVERSITYYYYYYYY?!?!?!
**** diversity. Just hire the best people for the job regardless of what sex they are. And Apple is doing this.

I'm sure that Apple will be better for having him on the team, but this leaves a huge vacuum for tech consumers looking for factual, accurate, and unbiased information.

Good point! If your a geeky 14-year old there's an opening for "Internet tech blogger". The basics of reviewing hardware aren't that hard if you're really interested and considering it for a career. There are a lot of good discussions out there on how to review... It's about attention to details and fairness.. And good writing skills... The tech part comes later when you go from reviewing the ponies to actually calling the winners.

Is this the same guy who spent a few grand upgrading his Mac Pro cpus a few years ago, and then torqued the crap out of the heat sinks, crushing the pins on the socket, requiring a new logic board AND a new pair of cpus?

This will help him break even on that

Having such an astute analyst on board can only make Apple products better.

I'll miss his independent reviews at Anandtech, however. But anything gets old after a while-he must have needed a change.

Best of luck to him!!

Many years ago, Bill Gates, when asked why Microsoft was so successful, answered, " I hire the smart people". Well played Apple.

Damn. How do we know if a Mac is any good now... ;)

Actually I see a big downside to this for Apple. There are precious few technology journalists who put facts before a story. These days it's too much about getting clicks via reporting controversy, that's why MacRumors and it's like seem to publish more patent stories than benchmarks.

Anandtech is somewhere where they actually do research and provide information you can make decisions on. It gets unfortunate for Apple because the skilled in-depth analysis of Apple systems often finds far more positives than any other technology editor would dare publish, through fear that the generally quite clueless and partisan readership simply wouldn't understand it, and therefore would feel entitled to dismiss it as just Apple PR. I'm not sure where reliable reviews for Apple gear will come from now, especially when the product deserves a very positive one.

Well that explains AnandTech's covering more and more apple devices in recent years. I suspect some will claim he sold out.

Congrats! I guess... apple must have offered him something he couldn't refuse... hope it turns out good for all us readers too :)

What's with the lukewarm response ppl?

Anand is fantastic news! If he ends up being anywhere near the hardware division, he is going to attract a lot of talent and they will give Apple their best just to impress this guy!

Saying this is incredible news is an understatement.

I've always enjoyed his breakdowns of Apple's SoC especially after the debut of the A6 when Apple began customizing the CPU vs using a standard ARM. Even if I didn't even understand 90% of the stuff he said. He would explain what they meant.

Wonder if they would still be able to provide that excellent analysis or with Anand leaving for Apple we will see that excellent breakdowns end. :(

I have exactly the same thoughts. I loved reading his breakdown of Apple's technology, especially Apple's SoC's. I've read those articles several times, and I haven't seen anyone else's writing compare. His writing is simply incredible.

But.... I thought we were only gonna hire women because we need to be more diverse and stuff...???? What of our diversity Apple? WHAT OF OUR DIVERSITYYYYYYYY?!?!?!

I'm assuming Anand is Indian or Pakistani, so is probably part of the "diversity".

I have enjoyed Anand's in-depth reviews for several years. It has been the only Apple-reviews I have read, as he doesn't just review the product and how it feels, but also goes in depth with the hardware, CPU etc. (and I love that as an engineer).

I'm going to miss his expertise, and he is clearly one of the most experienced tech bloggers around. Looking forward to seeing what his exact role at Apple is. Maybe he will help Apple fine-polishing the watch, if it's not totally ready for prime-time (like the iPhone when it was first announced in 2007, where it could barely run without crashing).

Exciting times at Apple. They clearly have a plan with the recent hirings.

Or maybe because Apple is one of the only companies that really spends tons of resources on hardware research. Samsung and others mainly use off-the-shelf ARM designs, while Apple have created their own. There goes a lot of work into that, and I think that is what Anand has admired.

So another marketing guy, one who really knows his audience.
I'm half expecting him to be at their keynote now. I bet he'll at the October event, if they have one.

But.... I thought we were only gonna hire women because we need to be more diverse and stuff...???? What of our diversity Apple? WHAT OF OUR DIVERSITYYYYYYYY?!?!?!

Who said diversity had to be women?

As a balding man, I commend Apple for hiring a bald person, they don't have nearly enough of them! :p

This is like hiring a movie critic as a producer. Apple hasn't made much sense the last years.:cool:

Wow what a talent acquisition by Apple. It really underscores Tim Cook's point that the very best people in this industry want to work at Apple to do the best work of their life.

Just a thought but could he be Katie Cotton's replacement as VP of public relations? Not really familiar with Anand's work. Is he more valuable than that?

Well that explains AnandTech's covering more and more apple devices in recent years. I suspect some will claim he sold out.

Anandtech is one of the few tech sites that didn't sell out - it's still privately owned to my knowledge. Toms Hardware, Arstechnica (and others) got bought by publishing conglomerates. Toms Hardware in particular is a shadow of it's former self. Ars is still on the whole good.
