Great for Nokia engineers if Apple is hiring. Always a good move to go to a company that has a future.

Not necessarily, sometimes the best opportunity to shine and make an impact is when a company is struggling.

and thank god for that! so bulky ... if i want to take awesome vacation pics etc i take my real camera. the phone camera is good enough for random instagram snaps

Spoken like a wise man .... I 100% agree. The phone cameras are for the occasional snapshot, Facebook and Instagram pics. If you really want to have fantastic shots for for vacation or other events, a 'real' camera is still what you need. Sure, the Nokia cameras are great (for a smartphone camera), but still no replacement for my DSLR or even a high end compact camera. So I use my iPhone for the occasions where I don't have my big camera with me or for Instagram shots (where no high quality is needed) and for everything else I use the DSLR.

I welcome this addition if this means the next iPhones will have even better cameras.

No question Zeiss has a great reputation and history, so if they had (or have) the ability to use it, then by all means.

Apple sure has the ability to, they've got so much funds lying around in their coffers.

Carl Zeiss lenses are phenomenal, unfortunately, their SLR lenses are awfully expensive (but the quality is so bleedin' good too). My Carl Zeiss 55mm Otus can testify to that :)

Wow. Microsoft must be thinking they're screwed, they can't keep the top talent.

I'm sure that the thought of working for Microsoft didn't enter into this. Being a big fish in a bigger pond is harder... Given Microsoft's history with consumer hardware products, I'd expect more ship jumpers...

+1
I had started to refer to the Nokias as Cameras with a smartphone included

Pit the iPhone 5S against the Galaxy S4/S5 and the iPhone still wins. It's not about the pixels - it's about the saturation, sharpness, color accuracy, contrast....etc.

I Disagree,Galaxy S4s camera quality easily beats any iPhone (sadly).
It's definitely not about mega pixels, but the saturation, color, contrast and specially lower noise and sharpness of S4s pictures and videos are far superior to any iPhone.
You can even check online side by side comparissons on youtube and S4 clearly has an edge over 5S unless someone is blind or ignorantly biased.

I've heard galaxy s4 used Sony sensor.

Camera quality is definitely an area iPhone needs to improve.
And as an iPhone user,I welcome that.

Finally, a decent camera coming in the iPhone. For as high a pedestal the iPhone is on (for many people, not me), the camera has always been lacking.

My wife has a Lumia 1020 and I also have a Lumia 1520 and having comparable cameras as these in the iPhone will raise the iPhone a notch in my book.

While this is a major win for Apple and a huge loss for Microsoft, let's not forget that he was in charge of Lumia photography, not PureView. Damian Dinning was the man responsible for PureView technology. While it's true that 1020 is superior in terms of photography compared to 808, 808 is still the original 41mp and oversampling holder.

What you think doesn't really matter. It all comes down to what the majority of consumers think when they see the photo results. The average consumer isn't a pundit or a pro photographer and most will settle for far less quality than you can imagine. Approximately 2% of all consumers in the world desire having a 41 megapixel camera in a smartphone. Nokia needs to get out of the smartphone business and start building cameras.

You're right but I'm free to give my opinion. My point is that consumers are using smart phone cameras in lou of digital cameras. So much so the sale of point and shoot cameras are on a steady decline. So improving a smart phone camera has been a smart move by makers.

go Imaging Scientists!

Awesome to see a fellow Imaging Science degree holder making it big. :)

Speaking of purchases, Apple should buy Lytro. This is good stuff. I do hope they put a larger sensor into their phones, but what will that do to battery life?

On my last vacation, I brought my iPhone, my Canon 7D and my Canon GX1. I ended up not using the GX1 and just using my iPhone when I needed to take a quick pic. The year before that I still took pics using the GX1 while on vacation but yea if the cameras on the phones get better and with better video options, I don't think I'll be buying a point and shoot camera again and there's little reason to. I sincerely hope that the cameras on the phones do get on par with a good point and shoot.

Does anyone else see a looming power struggle between Ive and Partinen? Ive is always striving for thinest and sleeker design but those two do not necessarily blend with having the best camera. Can you keep a guy like Partinen on a short leash? Form vs. Function. Fight!

The ones with the most interesting development in the camera end is Sony though with the a7. Maybe Apple should poach one of them lol.

Now I am curious what role did Damian Dinning play and what role did Ari Partinen play in the Nokia purview cameras?

I hope so - the 808 Pureview was a stunning camera, only let down by its end of life operating system.

I'm glad you realise how good it is - I'm sick of all the willingly uninformed idiots on here having a go just for it having 41mp, where they refuse to see the obvious benefits of its 5mp resampled output.

Nokia is a real leader in camera technology, and it'll be cool to see that technology spread.

Niche products, and the 1520 is a dog performance wise. Then there that awful bump to accommodate the camera module.

Apple won't compromise the iPhone design with a bump, so they obviously hired this guy to work on designs that aren't gong to be thicker than the iPhone.

yous twos

Agree. I don't feel Apple has really kept up on the front end of the camera revolution.

Yous twos are so funny…. in which cave have you been living??? iPhone 5S kicks ass from your Lumias which can't handle properly color cast and white balance, not to mention the advertising scam Nokia tried when they filmed Lumia add with a big ass camera and showed the footage as Lumia's.

And as someone who deals with phones in a telco busines, your pipedream about customers considering Lumia's for their cameras is a myth, people choose them purely price (especially subsidized) and then not wanting an Android.
