I do not know why Apple is doing this. There will be no autonomous vehicle on the road until the highway dept. and the federal government upgrades all highways and I don't see congress doing that.

Where there's smoke there's fire so they're definitely building an EV.
What it can do and look like is anyone's guess at this point. However I have a pretty good feeling they will use Tesla's patents and use their Superchargers and even possibly by battery cells from them. Tesla has the best battery cell systems for cars in the world. Don't forget, they had meetings with Tesla last year. Not about buying Tesla (as most people thought), it was about the Gigafactory and being able to buy batteries from them instead of importing. Watch and see ;)

I'm not sure it'll be an autonomous car, or even an electric car. I envision a hybrid is more likely with tech from Tesla like another poster surmised. And if it's anything like the iPad or Apple Watch, Apple is probably closer to a revealing than anyone thinks. Many suggest at least five, with some saying more than a decade. If recent speculation/reports are accurate, I think it could be as little as a few years. Especially if Apple partners with an existing luxury manufacturer. Think the Motorola Rokr -- just a lot more tech and input from Apple.

Just buy Tesla and get it over with. This would be a good purchase unlike Beats.

If they would buy Tesla, i can't imagine what would happen  I think the beats purchase is really understandable, now they promote them as their own brand. Lets be honest the quality isn't that bad when you compare to other brands like Bose or Sony. (not talking about Senheizer, AT, ..)

Could still be CarPlay because at Volkswagen she worked on "the integration (mechanical, electronics, and firmware) of the center screen" and some Industrial Designers work only with software. (IxD)
What industrial designers at Apple only work with software?

Car makers are increasingly using touch screen interfaces, which is stupid when you have to look at them to press on the correct position. Not the thing you want to be doing when driving. Maybe Apple have cracked the car interface?

If its like most apple products, the device will probably have a bad battery... hmm as usual, wait till 2nd gen.
Bad battery? All Apple devices with internal batteries are known to have the best battery life compared to any competition. But all battery performance degrades over time so maybe it's time for you to get a new phone.

I swear, if Apple doesn't come out with an Apple Car or something along the lines in the upcoming few years.... They'll have a lot to answer for poaching all these car engineers, and disproportionately raising their salaries/demand from a project that never surfaced.

I know it's all legal and capitalism at its glory, but I'm just speaking from the gut.

Not sure about the car, I hope it will turn out great, but I'd like Apple to keep making something revolutionary in computer/electronics space like what Microsoft does now with its Hololens and Windows 10.

I don't why people keep calling it "The Apple Car". As if is going to have the Apple logo or running iOS or the Mac OS. The Autonomous Vehicle Department will be a spin-off financially supported by Apple.

What's revolutionary about Windows 10?

Sure $50B here, $50B there. In all seriousness, though, I'm glad they aren't buying Tesla. The consumer wins big time if these companies compete. And both companies keep their culture in tact. If Tesla can go from no car to building an electric car, Apple can too. Apple too have the advantage of funds no one else has, and they can buy a Tesla car to examine exactly what Elon is doing with the Model S very easily without buying the company. I think it's time we gave Apple the benefit of the doubt. They aren't stupid.

I don't think just any company can do what Elon has done. Tesla, Spacex, and I guess solar city to some degree (I thought he is on the board of directors, maybe someone could advise).

Apple could definitely put out an excellent car better then most current companies out there. But you have to give it to Musk, he has done a fantastic job with Tesla. Not really impressed with Apple watch yet (i still have hope), and we will see with Apple TV. Tim has his work cut out for him.

Does anyone still think Apple is just working on a supped up CarPlay for existing car makers?

When the first reports came out about Apple making a car, I was extremely skeptical. But I turned around later when Apple starting hiring people with body panel and suspension backgrounds. At that point it was pretty clear that this was about far more than just CarPlay or even some other new level of electronic gadget integration.

I am convinced Apple is at the very least collaborating on total car design in secret partnership with someone else. They are possibly doing much, much more than that, all the way up to designing a predominately-Apple car with little to no automotive partnerships. Except of course for manufacturing; they farm out manufacturing for all of their products anyway. Owning factories is not a business they want to be in.

I'm just finding it really hard to believe Apple are actually developing a car. The cost to design and develop would run into the billions, and the market is not going to be huge as not enough people simply don't queue up at garages for the latest model every 12 months!

Some kind of advanced vehicle control/entertainment system I can just about understand but a physical car, it goes against everything Apple has stood for over the last decade. Stick to what you know, what you're good at, and do it better than the rest...

i'm just wondering if Apple doesn't go ahead with the car would that mean 200 employees would be laid off since that's all their good at.

All that work would be for nothing

Unless Tesla has some sort of poison pill, Apple could launch a hostile takeover bid. Not much Elon can do if that happens. It would be a very expensive process though.

No way in hell would Apple: 1. Spend ~ $30 billion on a single acquisition 2. Do a hostile takeover of Tesla. Musk would be too much trouble and investors would probably expect at minimum a 50% premium ($45+ billion) and/or there'd be a humongous breakup fee.

Not sure how I feel about the fact that my favorite computer company enters the automotive space....

But if you think about it. Even if you buy all of Apples major products today, a MacBook Pro , an iPad, an iPhone you spend a lot less then on a car.

Apple is no longer a computer company as they have stated so themselves a years ago.
