Far cry from the dev charging 99p instead of 70p for a flappy birds app- don’t you think? No one is forced to buy anything from the App Store or from Apple itself. No one is forced to buy an iPhone. And Apple should not be forced to give away anything. It’s business - suck it up.
Not all apps are games.

The point is that the claim that people don’t do something unless they’re happy about it is patent nonsense.

There used to be a time when developer software and compilers cost $$$. When Apple loses its ability to charge a fee to host software on its own store and development platform that it created and has huge value to developers, expect Apple to start charging for Xcode, individual app entitlements, etc. I don’t think anyone has thought this through. Apple could easily say to developers “you can develop apps for your own store, but you need to buy our side load development software and be vetted before you can buy it. Prices start at $10,000 per dev, per year.”

I remember paying $1500 to join the developer program and another $1500 to buy the compiler (MPW Pascal) with documentation in a 3-ring binder. I agree that the people calling for this have not thought it through.

This is getting out of hand at this point. If I go to a bakery and the donuts are $10 each, I can pay or not pay. If the store wants a 30% commission on sales of my products, I can choose not to sell there.

I would agree with this if the apps were critical to life like a public utility. They aren't. There's other products and services to choose from at a range of prices from very cheap all the way up to several thousand dollars. Online marketplaces, mobile computers and devices, etc. are out there in droves.

There's alternatives to using the app store literally on Apple devices.. create a web app, create a companion app that people sign up for on your website and make the app free. Go to Android. Make desktop apps. Etc.

If the store wants a 30% commission on sales of my products, I can choose not to sell there.
You forgot something: „I can choose not to sell there… AND SELL MY PRODUCTS In ANOTHER STORE“. And that is not possible for iOS developers at the moment.

But fortunately the EU Digital Markets Act will force Apple to open up iOS to other App Stores and to sideloading, so that real competition will be possible on iOS.

Quick question, are you happy with your utility prices?
Ridiculous comparison.
Try living with no utilities in apartment or house, then try living without purchased apps from an app store.
Which one has a greater effect.
Its obivious you didn't think that one through before posting.

Can't deny that social democrats in Europe as a whole have been losing ground. And don't appreciate the patronizing tone, thanks.
They have been losing ground by overtaking the most important country of the EU, Germany?

Personally I am more concerned by development restrictions imposed on developers than the price added. Though I must admit I'd rather put a $10 app in the app store than a $15. I like to offer value for money, and the "Apple tax" is a bit exaggerated. Nevertheless, I'd be willing to be charged 50% if I the complicating and damaging code fences were lifted. Apple makes it easy to develop useless (overpriced) apps, but hard to create complex apps.

I could care less about App Store fees. But hotel and Airbnb fees. That I could get behind :) but only because it makes a more significant impact to my wallet

TO continue with this not fully applicable analogy of a donut shop, you COULD sell your donuts in the ANdroid donut shop next door OR reach the Apple donut store customers by selling your donuts in a pop-up shop right outside the shop doors (webapp) with no sales commision to either platform donut shop.

Yes!!!!!

Win for the consumers
no, its a loose.
when you go shopping for items in shops you are paying way more than 30% margin.
You could not go into your local supermarket and pay les for the services provided.
developers are getting a world wide audience and users are getting a safe and vetted app.

But iOS developers can develop for Android and iOS users can choose to buy an Android device. No one is forced to use and stay with Apple's devices. If you don't like the fact that there's only one source for apps on an iOS device, then you should probably choose a different platform. It's really that simple.

Real competition on iOS? That entire market only exists because of Apple and Apple alone. Any "competition" there is on iOS is because Apple allowed it. They created the OS, they created the developer tools, they created the hardware. This market didn't grow because of open competition, it only grew because Apple developed and created devices that people wanted to buy.

Forcing Apple to completely change their business model is not how you fix the lack of choices in the market. In fact, you're actually taking away a choice - for millions of people who prefer how Apple runs their platform and how their devices work.

Instead of wasting all this time trying to destroy what others have built, maybe the EU should just create their own devices? It seems what they want for their consumers is to buy completely blank devices and then search for and install all the features they need and want for themselves.
