The one thing it won't be is free bumpers;

Apple would kill the 3rd-party case market for a while, of which Apple want to keep good relations.

The productions of the bumper couldn't keep up with handing them out.

Bumpers is still a stopgap. I don't think they are going to jam a load of media into a room, and say: "We will give out free bumpers." That is just ready for more criticism.

Thus, Aristotle spake. It made no sense, but
The iPhone 4 has not been released in Canada yet or in a number of other countries. I'm a Canadian. What are you confused about?

What are the numbers? Is this a widespread problem or is it being inflated by the likes of Jason Chen and android fanboys?

Comprende?

Oh, and I think they should hire Steve Seagal to handle complaints. :D

Sounds reliable. AND highly respectable.

Fail.

Did you even read the test methodology? He clearly states the limitations of his testing (hence the respectable part).

You've obviously made up your mind not to believe the article I posted, but to the rest of us it is a reasonably good quantification of what people have been qualitatively experiencing.

covering the back of the iPhone 4 and side of the iPhone 4 ? (similar to Zagg invisible shield or better)

it could be easier to apply (in apple store or ourselves)

1. apply the software patch to show correct signal
2. apply the screen protector to make it non-conductive

bad idea?

I actually did this and it didn't help at all.
As a matter of fact, the 4's back os made of something that the invisible shield wants to peel of of. It came off in a week

Anandtech is a highly respected tech site. He knows what he is doing and did tests that are as good as anyone without expensive equipment can do.

And CR did comparisons as well and what their engineers found agrees with Anandtech's report as well.

How many people used their iPhone 3G or 3GS without a case? Now how many people complaining about buying a case for the iPhone 4 used a case for their 3G or 3GS?

If you had a case before, just buy a damn case and be done with it.

Don't bother with this guy. He knows the iP4 has an unprecedented level of signal loss when held normally. He knows the complaint is that the phone drops calls in situations the 3GS never did, not bars or whatever. He knows that a single finger on the holding part of the case shouldn't result in a 100+ fold drop in signal power as has now been demonstrated by multiple sources. Just add him to your ignore list - he's just in it for the fun of it.

How's the Steak, Chaz? I might be interested in one when AT&T supposedly launches it on the 19th, if it's around $500.

If you're going to use it as a phone make sure you try it in store as it is a beast! It's a great little device but will be far better when it gets FroYo (I've be been spoilt by the performance of FroYo on my N1).

The stock keyboard is not the best but I've recently installed SwiftKey from Android Market and that is perfect!

Thanks for the heads up. His use of "fail" should have clued me in.

Press conference in 6 bullets:

1. This problem is way overblown.
2. We are releasing a software update TODAY to address the signal indicator.
3. We are offering FREE Apple bump cases to all iPhone 4 users, including those purchasing today and beyond.
4. We want to assure the public there is no real problem with the iPhone's reception and have corrected the signal graph in the iOS4 software and are giving away the bump cases as a sign of good faith.
5. We will continue to make money off of you regardless of any bad press.
6. Number five point for evhars.

I want them to address the proximity issue. i doubt they will but would love to hear what they have planned for that. The most ridiculous thing about the majority of the posts from people who don't experience either of these problems is that they think they only exist on a small batch of phones. Both of these problems are issues on every iPhone 4!

Consumer Reports in located in Yonkers, NY. What is the reception like there on AT&T?

I'm hearing very little from anyone outside of AT&T who are having a problem.

Is this a real problem or is it a matter of people blaming poor reception in some areas in the US or the UK on the iPhone 4?

This model still has not been launch in Canada and I was looking forward to buying an unlocked version of the iPhone 4.

PS. Everyone seems to have a short memory because the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS had dropped calls problems in the US on AT&T but worked fine elsewhere. It seems like people are blaming the antenna design for their problems because it is one of the new design features.

Uh no.

have friends in high places and have confirmed this to be true. They are relocating the antenna from the bottom of the phone to the top as well as fixing some software issues. There will be a full recall. All iPhone 4's that were in Apple's warehouses were sent back to China. Could take up to 90 days for the recall process to be complete.

I just got the email to pick up my 4 in the store on Friday. Pretty sure they weren't all sent back to the warehouse. By the way, I stopped by to say I will continue to wait on the white and they couldn't believe it. People aren't passing them up at our store.

Here's something I whipped up quickly. I saw a commercial for Total Recall on some channel & it gave me this idea :D

I understand what you're saying about people who have had cases on their other iPhones.

But what about those of us who never put a case on our iPhone 2G, 3G or 3GS? It's like buying a Rolls Royce (what I used to consider the iPhone compared to every other phone on the market) and putting an ugly black bra on the front to protect it from road chips. No one does. Half of the iPhone's appeal (for me) are the aesthetics!

Get the title?? It's a play on words!!!

"Apple holding iPhone 4 press conference"

Get it they are having a press conference to tell us how to hold the iPhone 4!!!

The bump cases won't happen because if they do, it's the same as admitting the problem is in the hardware.

Funny, seems like this press conference would never have happened without CR's article. Hmmm. And free bumpers is clearly admitting that there is a design error. How are they going avoid a recall if they are offering us free bumpers. And how is admitting any problem going to size up to all their other bonehead previous statements?

I'm almost 100% certain how this will all go down......

*Steve Jobs enters. A hush falls over the room*

"Guys."
"Just hold it differently."
"Not that big of a problem."

*Steve Jobs leaves the room*

You obviously didn't read the CR article. They controlled for that variable in the test conditions.

Its been said in this thread already, but I'll repeat 'cuz I agree: Whatever happens it will be interesting.

I don't often hold my phone, because of BlueTooth, but I did drop a call the other day when I was holding it 'wrong' and saw the bars racing back when I let go. I saw the videos early on, and was able to duplicate the problem, so its real, whether it only effects certain people or not.

I'm more shocked that this passed muster with Apple QC. Surely they knew about this going into it. Either someone made a calculated guess that most people would never notice, or they really truly thought it wasn't a big deal. Either way, the fancy new antenna system that effectively shorts or grounds out when you hold it... you'd think would have made it a no-go. It only takes a dozen engineers or testers in a room, dropping bars and killing calls, to realize that its just a bad idea.

I hope Apple comes up with a reasonable fix that doesn't involve a tri-fold brochure telling me how to hold my phone the 'right way'.
