Great, but I don't expect to see more than denials and sales numbers.

lololol

Wow. Surprising news. One thing is for certain, however -- they'd only do a press conference if there was some sort of major action afoot.

Free bumpers is a non-starter. You don't tell people your product is flawed and then expect them to buy it just because you hand out a case.

My money is on 1) All currently produced models remain on sale; 2) Production lines being retooled for hardware rev with antenna coating or some such; 3) New rev debuts along with the white iPhone; 4) Owners can trade in for new revision when it launches if they so desire.

I'd find that hilarious if true... Since, as others have pointed out... Apple's already producing as many iPhones as they can. I think reports have stated they're expected to produce 1 million iPhones PER MONTH. With 2 million iPhones already sold, how on Earth do you expect them to replace the 2 million existing ones while still having some left to sell?

Sure, if it's just a coating... then they could probably just start refurbishing the old iPhones by adding the coating to them... But it sounds like a hell of a lot more work (and thus more costly) than giving away free bumpers.

I'm not saying that free bumpers are a certainty... Just that they're far more likely than some "retooled" iPhone.

Coatings can scratch/wear off... And the visual aesthetic of the iPhone might be lost. A full retooling of the antenna design would require them to resubmit the device to the FCC for re-testing.

white iphone availability announcement lol

LMAO!
This is all I'm waiting for. I went into the Apple store today and played with several models. Long story short I think people LOOK(some not all) for the signal issues. it took a good 35-45 sec for the bars to drop. I still don't understand the major cry about the signal lost.

3gs versus 4

Anyone think it weird though how in the demo he gave, that the old phone loaded it really quickly, and the iphone4 stalled... would this be antenna trouble too... he was gripping them both side by side?

I would hope that they would offer to repair/recall them...

As much and I and my family love the iPhone 4, we're returning ours before the 30 days is up for a refund.

This fiasco is unacceptable....

Already returned the 1st gen iMac 27"....waiting on 2nd gen
Apple FINALLY offers to fix/replace 2008 Time Capsules...
and now this 1st Gen "resigned" iPhone 4

Seems to me that 1st gen "redesign" anything from Apple is a dud.

Here we go, another anti-Apple troll!

Guess what. No one cares. We know you are a lying troll.

I don't see any way that Apple does a full blown recall. That would be financial suicide. I think they'll own up to the problem (while simultaneously downplaying it), and will announce a software update as well as free bumpers, or store credit for people who have already purchased bumpers.

Though I could definitely see Jobs trying to pull a "these are not the droids you're looking for" act.

Steve will tell everyone at the conference to turn off their WiFi. It's blocking the signal causing the call to drop. No way was holding it the wrong way was the culprit.

Apple is holding a press conference about the iPhone 4 BEFORE the return date, that is saying a lot for Apple. It gives people a chance to return it in case they do announce that it's a hardware issue and is not fixable.

But I'm pretty sure that either A. They found a fix or B. They didn't find a fix and they'll be issuing bumpers for those who want to retain the iPhone, or they can return the iPhone because they're still within the 30 day return policy.

I'm just hoping that after the conference, all the angry, whiny b****hers will either shut the hell up, or return their iPhones (but I'm sure they'll just all start a thousand threads each, complaining about the conference and how Apple sucks). So I won't hold my breath.

Apple has made it's designs for looks over function lately anyway. It shouldn't surprise anyone that this has continued. Ives needs to get canned.

They should also fire the clown who almost creamed his black jeans while talking about the "brilliant" antenna design at the keynote. ...and the other joker who sent the "you're holding it wrong" email to a customer.

Regardless the press release will be jobs stepping down as CEO

Right answer, but it's not going to happen.

I've always believed that Apple discovered some antenna anomalies during testing and realized the problem after production began so they created the quick-fix, ie. "The IPhone 4 Bumper". They didn't think the problem was serious so they decided to sell the bumpers for $29, but the contingency plan was to offer the bumpers for free in a worse case scenario. It's just too obvious that Apple would design a case that only goes around the metal band (antenna) on the iPhone.

The flaw in this logic is why did they wait so long then and take such heat over the issue if they already had a contingency plan? Within days of hearing the problems from customers, they could have starting shipping everyone free bumpers.

I'm guessing there was either a manufacturing flaw that's caused this (and it was not present in the hand build prototypes) or a design flaw that just never got caught in time for the launch.

I get the impression that iOS4 was rushed out before it was really ready and maybe the whole thing was rushed due to the pre-announcement causing Apple to panic some????

They'd better address the Proximity Issue as well...

I am AMAZED they've handled it this bad to far. I mean, it's just technology... it's never 1000% perfect. Just COMMUNICATE and be truthful with your (absurdly) loyal customer base.

;)

picture for story..??

I don't get what the picture of an iPhone with June 22nd on it has to do with the story.. can anyone fill me in?

.
I hope Steve doesn't take the fall for Jony I've.

Make Jony I've get up there and explain this and the other issues that came out of his office like the iMac yellow screen, the iPad huge bezel, the super scratchable iPods, the mirror like MBPs...

Why does everyone think this will be about the reception issues? Don't see that anyone mentioned a Verizon announcement. I honestly expected it a couple weeks ago, but this Friday is close enough for my thinking.

2012, sorry. News got a hold of the contract via a class action and that's when it expires with AT&T

You know... maybe the signal problems they had at the Keynote should have been our first clue that iPhone4 may have some signal issues!

I bet that's where Steve learned about holding it wrong! LOL!

He was using wifi though...and no one seems to be having wifi reception issues so i doubt it...I believe he will be Demoing iOS 4.0 vs 4.1 on the iPhone 4 and show that the new software update prevents signal loss...I'm interested to see if he will be reproducing the reception issues that people have been having...doubtful though.

....Any thoughts on this?

Pat themselves on the back for a successful iPhone 4 launch and to announce the availability of the white iPhone?
