Apple is holding a press conference about the iPhone 4 BEFORE the return date, that is saying a lot for Apple. It gives people a chance to return it in case they do announce that it's a hardware issue and is not fixable.

But I'm pretty sure that either A. They found a fix or B. They didn't find a fix and they'll be issuing bumpers for those who want to retain the iPhone, or they can return the iPhone because they're still within the 30 day return policy.

I'm just hoping that after the conference, all the angry, whiny b****hers will either shut the hell up, or return their iPhones (but I'm sure they'll just all start a thousand threads each, complaining about the conference and how Apple sucks). So I won't hold my breath.

I think when you spend as much on Apple products, the people experiencing issues should be eligible for a refund. Infact it applies to any other company aswell, When there is a defect in the hardware/product we deserve our money back. Not long ago Nvidia suffered the same issue, they had to do a recall on a lot of its graphics chips..

My point is, if there is something wrong with what we've bought we deserve an explanation and a refund.. I don't think its whining, I mean what would you do if you bought something and it wasn't working as it should? You wouldn't keep quiet now would you? Anyone experiencing issues would post their experience as they should.. Its human nature..

LMAO!
This is all I'm waiting for. I went into the Apple store today and played with several models. Long story short I think people LOOK(some not all) for the signal issues. it took a good 35-45 sec for the bars to drop. I still don't understand the major cry about the signal lost.

Then you don't live in a mediocre coverage area. Just because you don't experience the problem or it doesn't effect you, doesn't mean it isn't real. 35-45 seconds for the bars to drop is irrelevant, that's only a calculation based on strength averages (or else the amount of bars you have will change insanly fast. Signals regularly fluctuate ~10dBm according to your hand position, location, ect). The instant you touch the black bar your signal to noise ratio will hit rock bottom and transmissions will start to fail. All you have to do is touch the black bar while running a speedtest and it will stop.

They should also fire the clown who almost creamed his black jeans while talking about the "brilliant" antenna design at the keynote. ...and the other joker who sent the "you're holding it wrong" email to a customer.

He never said "you're holding it wrong". That's a misquote, started by snarky bloggers.

He said, ""Non issue. Just avoid holding it in that way."

Then sent a longer email explaining why.

Whether you like it or hate it, if you're going to flog him for it, at least quote him correctly.

Anyway, my thoughts on Friday's press conference....

It's very possible that all iPhone 4's are NOT faulty, but due to the "public" (internet) perception spilling over into mainstream media, they're going to go above and beyond the call of duty to avoid tarnishing the brand.

So you have tens of thousands of faulty units (acceptable for 2 million+ units built) that have possibly failed due to issues in the new manufacturing process, and a software display bug.

You combine this with the fact that ALL antenna's attenuate when touched (especially external ones) and you can have a serious perception crisis that gets amplified by a blogosphere desperate to report on anything Apple. And if they can make it look SUPER negative, they'll always opt for negative.

This is why the many positive reports on the new antenna from the public, from the tech press, and from antenna engineers who have come forward in recent days have been overshadowed.

My bet is that Apple has now studied the problem, documented the loss of signal on numerous phones, figured out what is causing the issue and has a simple software fix.

This will be a fast non-issue. Steve will show how the engineers had fine tuned the iphone 4 radio software to work with the unheld phone. Next he'll explain that by bridging the gap people are de-tuning the antenna. Therefore the sensitive radio software loses signal (aproximately 15 Db down).

The solution is a software update available immediately that allows the radio to work better with the de-tuned antenna only dropping the signal (6 DB). Finally he'll show a slide showing every other smartphone dropping more than an average of 6 DB when the user covers the antenna area with their hand.

One more thing! White iphones are now for sale and they are MARVELOUS!

Jobs stepping down is the right answer? you HAVE to be kidding me.

He's losing touch.

Someone here has been saying that the right answer is to split Apple into Apple Computer Inc. and Apple Gadgets Inc. Let Jobs and crew run Apple Gadgets Inc.

Staff Apple Computer Inc with people dedicated to making Apple computers - cutting edge machines and software for professionals, and easy to use machines and software for consumers. (And a mini-tower in between for the pro-sumers ;) )

Free Apple bumper OR discount/reimbursement/coupon (?$) for 3rd party case. Recall highly doubtful - Apple after all is still a profit driven entity no matter how they're dressed up.

Anyone think it weird though how in the demo he gave, that the old phone loaded it really quickly, and the iphone4 stalled... would this be antenna trouble too... he was gripping them both side by side?

Yeah I noticed that too. Also the reason why Steve wanted everyone off the network was because of the "attenuation" of the iPhone 4. All WWDC's sell out and NOT ONE HAD LOADING ISSUES, even the 1st Gen edge iPhone loaded quicker then the iPhone 4.

Apple should apologize about the problem, offer a refund or exchange. (Since iPhone 4 is a Eco friendly citizen Apple shouldn't have a problem recycling the device)

Oh yeah and RELEASE A MACBOOK AIR and MAC PRO update.

.
I hope Steve doesn't take the fall for Jony I've.

Make Jony I've get up there and explain this and the other issues that came out of his office like the iMac yellow screen, the iPad huge bezel, the super scratchable iPods, the mirror like MBPs...

Yes, because Jony Ive's ideas are able to make it out of Apple's headquarters to the manufacturing plants without Steve Jobs' approval. Sorry, but the buck stops with one man, and that's Jobs.

I guess it's possible they could also be announcing an agreement with another carrier like Verizon or Sprint. This would also be welcome news.

Jobs stepping down is the right answer? you HAVE to be kidding me.

Honestly. The guy shouldn't even be here. If it wasn't for his money $$$ he wouldn't have been able to steal a liver off the wait list.

That being said, he should stay on, he did nothing wrong. Jony Ive on the other hand has been a liability since the get go.

My friends, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Time for Jony Ive to be replaced.

Simple, everyone will be offered a free rubber Bumper or 90 days to return their phone. They'll be betting on few returns and a lot of cheap rubbers. :)

"There is no problem people. Nothing to see here. Go about your business. Obey Apple."

:)

That's the whole problem. Jobs' RDF only works for "Fanboys extreme". The "Loyal ones" will blindly believe anything that comes out of Jobs' mouth but Apple is no longer a niche company selling their wares to a few fanatics. If Jobs stands up and tries to BS users, the stock will drop like a rock and Apple will take a PR hit like they have never seen before. We've already heard his earlier attempts at BS (You're holding it the wrong way, etc) and again, while that may work with the fanatics, most thinking people have enough common sense to know when they're being BSed.

My guess is that the board got to him and is sending him out there Friday to bite the bullet, admit it's a design error, and he will outline a remedy - most likely a recall or replacement for a corrected model.

I hope they announce a solution to the solve the Gulf oil spill, because that's a major issue people should get up in arms about.

I thought LeBron James was going to do it, but as it turns out that was just another example of people focusing on crap that, in the long run, doesn't really matter.

Yeah, it's annoying, sure; but what if we all put our energy into universally important things? Just a thought.

If only software could magically fix signal issues. Unfortunately, RF doesn't quite work like that. Even with hardware amplifiers, if you weaken a signal because of a hardware issue (be it a resistance inline with your receiver or an issue with the receiver itself) you'll be reamplifying the noise along with the signal, making your now stronger signal much noisier.

Software doesn't get access to the signal until it has been processed by a sort of DSP or other hardware signal processor. That hardware can't process what isn't there.

There is no software fix for detuned antennas. You can pad all the error correction you want, No signal is No signal.

He never said "you're holding it wrong".

Please be sure to go back and correct the 23 posts in this thread before mine that have said "holding it wrong".

That's a misquote, started by snarky bloggers.

I think "misquote" is a bit strong - usually that means that you've twisted the words so that the original meaning is lost.

I think that most people would consider that the two sentences:

  1. Just don't hold it in that way.
  2. You're holding it wrong.
mean roughly the same thing - in other words it is more of a paraphrase than a malicious misquote.

Seems to me they are holding shipments up. We've had a 16GB iPhone on order at our AT&T store for 8 days. The phones had been coming in less than 7 days as of last Tuesday. I'm expecting a duct tape bonus in the box. ;-)

My own iPhone 4 has not shown any problems with the antenna or dropping calls, so it's a non-issue for me. I live in a rural area where coverage isn't stellar and this phone seems to have better reception that my first gen iPhone.

There is no iPhone...

..then you'll see it's no the iPhone antennae that shorts-out but only yourself. ;)
