I still have a deep down fear that we will may end up with pretty much the same design as the 3G/3Gs. Maybe why Apple was so mad the prototype was lost. That it was for the NEXT revision not the one in June this year.

Seriously. Rumors are getting less and less interesting.
I personnally found one interesting piece of information in this entry.

Despite all those crazy rumours about OLED screens for the iPhonev4, people forgot that the global production capacity was not enough to fulfill demand. It might be enough for a few models of Android sold in only limited regions but it can not sustain the HUGE requirement from Apple with a single model for the whole world. At last some rumour busting facts.

Duh!

Of course Apple has many other prototypes.....that's what businesses do! That's why they are called Prototypes. There's always a selection of prototypes to choose from once there is a commitment to produce/sell a product.

Now THAT...

...is a very well put together rumor! It's fresh, it speculates, it dangles new information... by Jove, it's got it ALL!

But I must say, having felt the edges of my iPad (and the speaker holes at the bottom), and having seen these photos circulating so long now, I almost feel like I already OWN one of these square-edged iPhones. I can't say I'm happy about either the flat-backed monstrosity of recent infamy, or another iPhone 3Gs form factor, but neither is going to turn me off to an upgrade.

The leaks really pushed Apple's hand. I bet they have been working double time getting the new case working perfectly since the Gizmodo leak. There's no going back to a 3GS case at this point.

I called this a while ago. This is Steve's revenge phone. Because of the leak, no new design this year.

Thank Gizmodo
Are you being serious? If yes, don't embarrass yourself any further.

It's a normal thing to keep a lesser upgrade in reserve in case of unforseen problems. We saw a similar situation with the iTouch last year with the camera issue (prototypes since appearing with the camera that was rumoured but pulled at last minute).

Have no fear, the new design is what we'll see unveiled by Jobs on the 7th. This interim/reserve design I suspect may still get an airing, but for that different tech Verizon phone you lot in the US are all getting your pants in knots about.

i'm convinced (and i said this 2-3 weeks ago) that there are more surprises to be announced, week after next. either another design that was NOT leaked or additional products that'll make up for the blown surprise of the phone that WAS leaked. either way, steve's not simply going to go on stage, hold up the leaked phone, and pretend the audience has never seen it.

there's more.

Yes, that's how multibillion dollar PUBLIC companies make decisions on their most important products- the petty whims of their CEO.

It's literally impossible for the scenario you described to happen.

Who wants to bet that the 89 model will still happen? It will become the "cheaper" model with an updated Apple A4 cpu but otherwise the same as the current 3GS. So the public will think it's the same, and for all extents and purposes it will be but the chip supplier will end up being different.

Or what if they just go for the jugular and have the "old" model, using new internals so it can still run video chat, etc., but has capacity limited to 16gb or something?

A full array of phones with common features, separated at $99/$199/$299 because of memory only? Would be brutal for the competition (though unlikely).

You don't know much about corporate world do you? Because the CEO whims is exactly how many multi-billion corporations operate! And it couldn't be more true in case of Apple - many of their key business decisions (boycott of Flash, App Store rejection of Google Voice) are based on not much more than a petty whim of Jobs.

On the broader subject - if Apple recycles the same tired iPhone hardware design for the 4th iteration - they are done.

;o

SJ would say "not to worry"

Not surprising to hear about the OLED supply constraints. Apple has continued to gobble up large amounts of NAND memory and touchscreen displays, forcing competitors to consider pricier options (e.g., buy at the spot market) or use inferior parts.

For every three iPhones Apple sells, they also sells two iPod touches. People looking at these rumors need to view Apple's supply situation with a wider perspective than just the iPhone.

If this is true, Apple will lose a lot of sales due to people holding out for the Prototype model to come to reality.

Gizmodo, you have cost Apple millions already in lost revenue while people wait for late June (factoring in the $$$ that they'll lose having to sell 3GS phones at a discount.) This could potentially cost them Hundreds of millions if people are like me and simply won't upgrade until there is a new hardware design. I will have my square phone!

It would be highly unlikely that Apple would have a DVT unit being field tested sixteen months before launch.

A lot changes in a year, a lot of those components would change.

The leaked prototype is this year's phone.

Very interesting... not that Apple created multiple versions of the next-gen phone, but that at least one of the alternatee designs was advanced enough to be releasable.

They're really taking their risk management seriously.

LOL, we've likely been subjected to "plan B" releases in the past. i.e. where we were expecting a major revision but got a spec bump instead -- the big revision may have been plan A but didn't pan out for whatever reason.

"Other carrier" variant which may offer voice capabilities for carriers such as Verizon, but even more likely will be a data only phone which uses VoIP for voice so it is carrier agnostic.

Seems unlikely that they'd do a data only model BUT in the US it'd still need to be dual CDMA/WCDMA GSM to work with both Verizon and AT&T/T-Mobile.

I would hope Apple at some point would be using the same WCDMA chip that Nokia uses in the N8. That supports both AT&T AND T-Mobile 3G WCDMA bands.

You are probably right. But I do think that Apple's once a year update model is going to change. The market is changing too quickly for them to only release new models once a year.

Well, I trust Steve this time.

His mail response plus latest Android phones and announcements make it totally impossible to just show an iPhone 3GSS and get away with murder.

What if Apple HAS production issues with the new IPhone design and this piece of information is a controlled leak to get everyone used to see the old design on June 7th ?
