This "same old tired design" rubbish is the biggest cop out I've read on here.

Two months ago the vast majority of iPhone owners loved the design of their product. One leak later, the current design is suddenly "tired"?

Please ...

Hardly "suddenly".. The iPhone design basically hasn't changed since 2007. This stuff just doesn't fly in the today's smartphone market - people want new refreshed form factors and innovative hardware, not just software updates.

Look at the latest crop of smartphones - HTC Evo, Droid Incredible, Motorola Shadow.. your iPhone looks like a child's toy next to them. Again, fine for 2007.. doesn't cut it for 2H 2010.

I called this a while ago. This is Steve's revenge phone. Because of the leak, no new design this year.

Thank Gizmodo

I'd seriously laugh my arse off if this happened. Just imagine the stunned silence at the keynote when Steve, after talking for 30 mins about magic and fairies wipps out a 3g form factor phone.

In reality it would be Google who would have the last laugh and Steve might ge the sack by the board for the second time in his careir.

(Sent from my iPhone: hence the typos)

You must be kidding?! The HTC EVO has more dents than a '53 Chevy and a kickstand of all things. If you think that is cool you better stick with it. There is not a Droid out there that comes close to the iPhone, with the possible exception of the Samsung Galaxy S.

Interesting article. Kinda kills the Verizon rumors. 3 prototypes? well, I think we've seen 2 of em. (the one with screws on the bottom and the one without)
Which one will we see at WWDC?????

How is it that people STILL think that Apple leaked these on purpose? For one, Apple doesn't even conduct focus groups on new products- isn't it clear by now that Apple alone dictates what it's products look like and do, not marketing or focus groups? I believe it's been documented pretty well in exlusive interviews and reports, not just rumors. Second, if Apple purposely leaked the Gizmodo iPhone, then they wouldn't have prompted a criminal investigation, as that would get them in some hot water legally.

Even autmobile manufacturers don't use the public feedback on sightings of it's development cars. If a car company has cars driving around in nearly finished bodywork, they aren't just testing how it looks, they're well into starting production and are fine tuning the underpinnings. Car shows are where car companies guage public opinion on new designs, with concept cars, not on late-development mules.

Seeing as though you're "totally convinced" that this is a marketing survey of some sort, I don't think that I'm going to convince you otherwise. There isn't some grand scheme here to test public opinion.

However, I do have several millions of dollars that I need to deposit into a bank account notlocated in my home state, to avoid some taxes. Perhaps I can convince you to message me your name, SS#, and bank account number so that I may deposit the money in your account for a short time. In return, I'll give you 25% of the balance!

focus groups are last century. these days technorati and other companies scan the internet and automatically figure out customer opinions. leak a design and let them do the scanning to see what people think.

Yeah you keep telling yourself that.. There's a reason why iPhone market share has been steadily dropping during all of 2010. While Droid Incredible has been sold out during since day one. People are tired of stale 2007 design with tiny screen, 320x480 resolution and sad 3MB camera.

Apple needs to wake up and smell the coffee - they can't just milk the same product for years and expect to be competitive. If they pull more of the same stuff with 2010 iPhone - they officially lost the smartphone war.

I too have my heart set on the leaked form factor we have been shown. However, I still thought in the end it was more about what's inside rather than outside.

And while a refreshed design is welcomed, I think you may be overstating a tad with the "iPhone looks like a child's toy" in comparison to the other phones you are alluding.

Get back to me on the market share stats after the next iPhone release!! I suppose if Apple had 20+ models out there like the Android with every possible carrier then Android could just go home!

I bet Apple is going to sell the 3GS like iPhone CDMA with Verizon for $149, then the iPhone 4G for $199 and maybe even the iPhone 3G for $99 to AT&T. That way, those who wish to have an iPhone with Verizon can choose to do so, but those demanding a cheap iPhone or the latest version of the iPhone with cool new features can go with AT&T.

Apple's been with AT&T for the longest time, adding new network related features like the proposed video chatting with a carrier they've already done stuff with would be easier than to do it with Verizon for example.

Plus, if Apple sold CDMA phones all over the place, GeoHot could unlock them some how and people would just use it with Verizon.. They still gotta keep AT&T exclusive to a certain extent here.

I hardly give a damn if they update the case. I want new features. Better camera with a flash. Better wifi. Faster processor - preferably an A4 variant. You know, the really important stuff.

The current case looks and works fine for me. Update the internals and I am there!

Here comes a repeat of the - iPod Touch without a camera - bubble bursting...

And a clear reason why they want to keep the prototypes under wraps so badly...imagine if they release the 3GS looking version with the same res................a lot fewer people are going to buy it.

When Apple starts offering buy one get one free offers, then we could be talking the same thing. As of now, I'll bet the iPhone itself has a larger percentage of the smartphone market than any other single model phone.

It's still about what the phone can do and the iPhone offers the best solution for me and many others.

I've owned an iPhone since day one of the first gen. I love it. But *if* Apple was so ignorant to release the new phone in the same exact design yet AGAIN, I would actually jump ship and pick up one of those new HTV Evo phones with the giant beautiful screen. I'm attached to my apps, but now that I have an iPad, I could make due. It's not what I want to do, but I'm tired of the staleness of this design. I'm an early adopter and like shiny new things. Give me something new!

Ignorant people living in a trailer somewhere with no internet access and people who never read a newspaper or watch the news on tv might not have known about it.

or, you know... TONS of people who don't care to follow rumors about technology... of which there are LOTS more of THEM than US, you know?

people need a phone, they buy a phone. even an iphone.

again, the VAST majority of normal, american consumers are not hunkered down waiting for the new thing to come out. MOST iphone customers have no idea there is anything scheduled for june.

it should be easy enough to prove this either way once sales figures come out for this quarter. mmmm... let me guess... nothing RESEMBLING "millions" of dollars lost to be seen. this year's quarter will likely be very similar to this quarter last year.

and, my girlfriend's mom doesn't live in a trailer, so stop thinking all moms live like yours. she is just a nice lady who doesn't know **** about when the next iphone is coming out. just like everyone else who isn't on these boards. which is MOST people.

i'm just saying... thinking apple lost "millions" on people waiting for the new phone is completely ridiculous.

focus groups are last century.

right. except for those constant focus group invitations i get. and the dozen i've been to in the last 3 months.

if you think they don't use focus groups any more... well, you're just wrong.

maybe APPLE doesn't. i don't know. but lots and lots of other companies do, covering everything from snacks to technology to automobiles and more. so it's pretty well represented, still.

That's not exactly true. As the number of able competitors enter the market, and the numbers of new smartphone customers enters the market, Apple's share of new sales will decrease. I'm not disagreeing that a new design is needed, but your conclusions may be off a bit. Even the iPhone were free to anyone who wanted one, as soon as a decent competitor enters the scene some would either defect and/or there would be new customers who wouldn't even consider an iPhone. Customers do like choice.

I'm a bit uncertain, it's time for me to change out my old 3G, but what if the Verizon version uses LTE, I rather be prepared for the future since the LTE rollout has been in full spring for some 6 months here in Sweden...

Frankly, I think DigiTimes' track record is too spotty for anyone to take this seriously.

I agree.

For starters they got the resolution of the iPad wrong, its 1024x768 - its a 4:3 aspect. The current iPhone is a 3:2 aspect.

Also if they really believe that 256MB is not enough for OS4.0 then they've really screwed up because its widely confirmed that the iPad only has 256MB.

It would make sense to have a backup design, but given the number of leaks and the different tweaks on the same design, I'd say we are definitely getting the new design next month.

I cant wait!

I have not posted this before and it is only "smart speculation" but the design we saw stolen has an assembly process that when you think about it would allow an arbitrary screen size with a fixed motherboard and would allow stacking of another layer in the middle with only a rim part change.

This would allow a 5-7" iPod Touch +3G/LTE, and would allow iPhone.mil. As well as a wide range of other "surprises".
