Notifications are one thing that really does suck on the iphone, they don't just need some "improvements", they need a complete overhaul.

Widgets would be nice, you wouldn't be forced to use them, that weather icon always displaying 73 degrees is pretty pathetic. If they don't change it in iOS 5 it will be 5 years old by the time iOS 6 comes out in 2012, 5 years without a single change, all while devs can make superior, working weather widgets in a few minutes that are all over Cydia. It's long past due.

This is not a wishlist, this is a direct order, no discussions, DO IT!

- Free form Widgets on the homescreen.

- Notifications - Steal HTC Desire HD's Android notification idea, combine notifications with the multitasking switcher and player controls.

Like this:
QuQi7.jpg

- Integrate SIP support - VOIP SIP integrated fully into the system.

- REAL multitasking switch - Like backgrounder, allow us to switch which apps we want to fully multitask, let the default stay the same i.e. save state multitasking.

- Alarm - Add a configurable snooze function.

- DivX/XviD/MKV Support.

- Ability to change SMS and E-mail tones.

- Full Bluetooth support - Sending files, contacts, syncing, etc...

- Wifi Direct support.

- Free turn by turn navigation with an ability to download maps(right from the phone like on Nokia N8) to use them offline.

Be done with this by June, or else!

Or else what, you're going to use a phone that will clearly work for you? Why don't you just do that in the first place? I also like how you just tell them to rip everything off when I get the feeling you'd just bitch about how it's not as good as they did on phone X and they shouldn't just copy. Good luck with your list, expectations, and sense of entitlement, you'll need it.

absolutely, 100%, fully agree with the OP

besides, we all know that if any of these features are implemented, it will be the first thing that people will brag about when they show off their iphones

Sounds like...

The OP wants an Android 2.3 Device?? Iphone will never get this stuff.

OP, dont take this the wrong way, but your basically asking iOS to be a clone of Android. Personally I want each OS to remain a bit more distinctive. Android has the features you looking for, why not switch?

For the record, why do you want "REAL multitasking"? Can you provide an example of a use case that isn't handled well under the current system?

i dont want widgets on my home screen, i'm quite happy with being able to check the time, and if i want to use the phone then unlocking it.

wouldn't mind a notification list, maybe in the spotlight search, as i never use that, but not on the lock screen.

i dont use VOIP so i don't even know what SIP is.

the multitasking is perfectly good now, i see nothing wrong with it. it doesn't slow the phone down like real multitasking would.

the alarm is one thing that i feel does need more functionality, such as a volume slider specific to the alarm, and an option to have the alarm fade in rather than blare out and wake you up suddenly rather than gently.

More codecs would be good

SMS tones i would like

Bluetooth is a definite, i couldn't understand when i got my iphone why it wouldn't work, phones have been able to do this for years, why doesn't the iphone? probably so we cant share our music i'm guessing but what about camera videos and pictures at the very least

Wifi Direct sounds good

i bought Co-Pilot for £19.99 and i'm quite happy with it. why not just do that?

bluetooth connectivity is kind of stupid. its too slow to transfer anything of decent size. widgets are stupid. i don't care about sms tones. its pretty much a given that we're going to get a new notification system.

Apple doesn't care what their customers think? That would be pretty bad business, no?

Does he speak for the whole iPhone population? He doesn't. Apple doesn't care what ONE person thinks. They care about what their millions of customers think.

Better notification would be nice.

But the thing I want the most both on my Ipad but even more on my Iphone is to be able to see if there are new mails and messages from my login screen without having to do the slide and entering my code.

Yup, just like he said, not from Apple. And so far there's no player that handles MKVs well.

While I agree that Apple will not add these codec’s to the native player, recently an API was added to iOS which allows for full accelerated playback of many formats (Including MKV). Unfortunately the API is currently considered private and can not be used by App Store apps. My fingers are crossed that this API will be made available for public use in iOS5

If you want to see an example of the API in action, take a look at the JB app for XBMC.

Divx, Xvid and MKV will never happen. Not from Apple.

You're right, even Quicktime in OSX doesn't do those without an added codec (and mkv not at all I believe).

Only one of the OP's list that I care about is customizable SMS tones (and email, etc) that one is simple and kinda just a common sense addition.

I still get confused by some people.

They say in general, "I want this iPhone to be just like that other phone". Well, why don't they just go get that other phone?

Or they'll say "if the iPhone doesn't have this feature next time, I'm going to/back to this other phone".

Again, why don't they just go get that other phone?

Or are they just the type of people that aren't happy they have the world in their pocket, and feel a massive desire to complain and aren't happy unless they're doing so?

Like I've always said, if you don't like whats on the TV...change the channel and stop your complaining. There are worse things in life. Be happy with what you have, and if you're not then go get what makes you happy. Complaining just makes you sound weak and pathetic.

With that kind of thinking, we'd all still be driving model-t fords. I'm sure Apple loves people like yourself who never question what they're sold and never desire for it to be improved.

The rest of us love the iPhone but see where it can and should be improved to make it even better. You can't stifle creativity even if you are perfectly happy with what Apple has blessed you with.

Main thing i want in iOS 5 is a proper notification system. Where i can add tasks from my Productivity Apps as well.
Multitasking? I honestly barely use it unless i'm listening to Internet Radio. There should be an option to turn Multitasking off.
That's about it for me for iOS 5. Is it too much to ask?

How long have you been using it? It took me a few weeks to get used to multitasking, as opposed to going back to the home screen to switch apps but I definitely love it now.

How did you get that from his post? He was suggesting that you vote with your wallet and buy the product that does what you want, instead of demanding that the iPhone do it too. This leads to a more robust market with user demand driving features.

Yea I agree, I0S5 could copy androids way of "multi tasking". So I can go back to doing battery pulls and restarts again. That works out so well for them & Blackberry!

Apple, keep up the great work with memory management!!!!

I've been using it for a while after i jailbroke my iPhone 3G. I'm not saying i don't use multitasking, i do when i need to. I just hope there was an option to turn it off to conserve battery.
If next week's event is only about the iPad 2 i'll be very disappointed. The iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch are nothing without a solid iOS.

That’s the whole theory behind Apples implementation. You don’t need to stop apps to conserve battery, since in general the app is suspended.

I do understand that some apps are buggy and will continue to consume resources while in the background, but these are the exception. I've identified some of these on my phone and have either deleted the app, or learned to manually terminate it after use.

Yea but this is an Apple forum so why shouldn't he state what he wants to see in the next version of iOS? I'm sure Apple reads this forum more than you would think.

I'm all for a new notifications system and customizable SMS tones, but a big NO to those widgets. Am I the only who things those can be incredibly cheesy?

+1

Apple is trying to make things simple with the iPhone. Right after you unlock it, you are presented with all your apps. With other smartphones, you unlock it, click apps, and then you are presented with your apps.

Think of it this way...

iPhone:
Unlock -> Apps -> Info

Widgets:
Unlock -> Info
Lock info
