Apple ID woes

Hey all,

I'm trying to download an app on my iPhone 4s. I put in my apple ID as required and then I get:

"An apple ID verification code is required to sign in. Type your password followed by the verification code show on your other devices."

I get the options to cancel or retry.

I click either and the same process starts again. I get a notification on my iPad with 6 numbers, but never do I get a screen to enter this on my iPhone.

Why is this happening? Why is such a contrived process required to download an app (and a process that doesn't even work?). Any help at all would be appreciated.

You type the 6 numbers straight after your password, without a space.
