People complain like always, but Apple's support is one of the best. First of all cause they have tons of physical stores. I never really thought about it until I was trying to help a friend with his messed up Samsung Galaxy and felt totally helpless, same again with my Acer laptop.

Why can't Boeing make planes that don't nosedive? Stuff's complicated, and at some point throwing more people/money at the problem doesn't do anything, or even makes it worse.
1. Apple has stores everywhere, in some countries only. Not here.
2. Boeing doesn't have a crash and burn plane MODEL almost every year. Boeing has 100s of models. Boeing is not a computer company. Other computer companies do not have the issues Apple has as a percentage of models released. Apple feels like it approaches 100%. Other computer companies had higher chances of something go wrong 1-2 DECADES ago. Apple's problematic (QA? Materials used? Design?) performance is appalling.
 
Yep, others just have the problems and let people get screwed if out of warranty. From what I've seen, Mac hardware is about as reliable as others, not better or worse.

Well if you follow through, my 2015 rMBP is a wonderful machine. By far the best laptop I've ever owned. Only downside is the keys are noticeably cheaper than on the 2012 rMBP, but the better battery life, faster graphics, and increased reliability more than make up for it. And I used to use every single port each day at work.

The new MBP is a travesty. Every single decision they made about it was so awful that I can't imagine what they were thinking other than that they wanna sell more dongles.
because they dont have legacy ports? i mean common the dongle debacle is nothing to cry about but people seem to think its a huge deal. Many devices are usb-c nowadays. For your old stuff get a few 2 dollar adapters leave them plugged into that accessory and move on with your life. I personally would rather be able to charge from either side of the machine than one. You know how many power cables i had to go through with my 2011 machine? Never an issue with the new ones because its a cable not a cable that frays because of god knows what but i had to pay 80$ two times within 4 years of owning that machine. My 2016 never had a frayed cable and if it did a usb c cable is cheap you dont need to buy the whole charger for magsafe.
Aside from that what are your other complaints about the new 2019's? they blow the 2015's away in everything and look better doing it.

I can/do keep my 2015 MBP and move on with my life instead of buying and forever carrying tons of dongles. USB-A isn't even the worst thing to lose, it's HDMI. No TV supports USB-C, and I want to stream stuff (seems like a typical use case). And nobody cares about the marginally faster CPU, nor does the new machine even look nicer cause there's no lit up logo. The only thing better about the ports is charging via USB-C.

They made the keys huge for no reason, and the additional area is impossible to press without hitting an adjacent key, so it just encourages fat-fingering. Trackpad is oversized, causing accidental input. And no, it's not a matter of getting used to it; I've had a 2016 MBP for a year now at work and have like 1/4 the WPM now. People also complain about the keyboard being very unreliable, but idc if the entire thing breaks cause I cover it with another keyboard now, as do others in my office.

Then you need to find some stats. Given that you buy Apple or, say, Dell, what's the probability of some failure? I doubt this can be found anywhere.

usb-c to hdmi cable. i carry one "dongle" that has two usb-c plug two usb-a, card reader and hdmi. Its really not a huge deal for the ADVANTAGES you get from 4 usb-c ports. Some people just dont like the idea that they have to buy a few extra things when you are already buying a 3000$ computer i understand that but its not anything for me. I have all kinds of audio and video cables and plenty of usb-c cables i can use with apples charger which is nice. Not a fan of white so i have a braided usb-c black cable thats 10 feet and its nice. You couldnt do that with the old machines. You where forced to buy apples charger even when the cable frayed or turned green and they never warrantied them.
As far as the trackpad its the best thing about this machine and the keyboard isnt bad. The 2019 keyboard is nice to type on. It feels more precise than the older keyboards like on my 2011. Some people try it out for 5 minutes and feel like they hate it i understand that. Only thing i would change about it is the spacing on the arrow keys.
Lit up logo? really? The new machines look classy and sleek. I dont hold onto old small things like startup chime and "nostalgia" to actually like using new technology. Each their own i guess...
Its like people holding onto the fingerprint sensor phones because they think its better than the no home button phones and the home button was “Apples trademark” now that there is no home button people think it’s wrong. I don’t get caught up in the past. Believe it or not new things are better even if small nostalgia things are missing from it.

Fair enough. But you'll miss out on perhaps the last of the best laptops Apple made... the 2017 MacBook Air. :)

I love my 2017 Air. :)

With each repair article on newer models, makes me glad I choose this machine.

Apple needs to make this public, and knock it off with select serial numbers if a person’s machine is showing issues if their serial # isn’t on the list.

They are doing the right thing, I don’t get all the hate. And I am the first to criticize apple when they screw up.

Also, the issue must be actually small. The first news I had about the failure was reading this story. Apple is doing a lot lately to regain goodwill, imho.

The issue is not with Apples customer service which is second to none, it's the drop in quality control over the past 3 years or so. I used to buy an Apple product with full confidence that it will last many years but that is no longer the case.

I just bought one last Tuesday, only problem is the finger print reader and the keyboard clickty clack noise which is the new norm from what I was told at the store. IMHO it's not a bad little computer, battery life is great. Yep Louis pointed out allot of issues with Apple products did they listen? who knows for sure. Whats funny is how many people come out of no where with this problem and that problem and their Storie's. It will be interesting to see what happens this fall for product updates.

With the new OS's coming will Apple start crippling the older product lines to buy the newer ones only to be crippled in time also?

So yet another case of "a very small number" from Apple. How many times have we heard that before? Lots of "very small numbers" is surely adding up to a significant amount. Buying a laptop from Apple is becoming a crapshoot.

It's not just Apple, but anytime this stuff happens, the FUD kicks in again. I would never blame Apple for anything. Particularly when i've used Windows systems not built to last either.
 
That is subjective. I think the non -retina display on those MBAs are fine. But I understand that others have higher standards.

At that moment in time they were definitely passable, for the 11" Air. The form factor was a priority over the screen itself. But these days I rarely use the Air and have passed it onto the wifey, as I much prefer the larger 14" WQHD on my Thinkpad. The butterfly keyboard issues and onboard storage was what finally drove me away from the MBP towards Thinkpads. I much prefer the tactile feel of the Thinkpad keyboards honestly, but still prefer the aluminum feel of the MBP.

Apple has identified an undisclosed issue with the logic board in "a very small number" of 2018 MacBook Air units, according to an internal document distributed to Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers on Friday. The document was obtained by MacRumors from a source who has proven reliable.

Apple will replace the main logic board in affected MacBook Air units, free of charge. Apple will also send an email to affected customers to let them know that their notebooks are eligible for a main logic board replacement. Apple did not provide any specific details or symptoms pertaining to the "issue."

2018 MacBook Air owners can visit Apple's support website to schedule an appointment with an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider. When the serial number of an affected MacBook Air is entered into Apple's internal repair system, a message will direct technicians to replace the logic board.

Apple will authorize coverage within four years of the MacBook Air's original purchase date. If the notebook has accidental damage that the customer does not want repaired, technicians are instructed to proceed with the logic board replacement at no cost as long as the damage does not prevent completion of the repair.

If accidental damage does prevent the logic board replacement from being completed, Apple says the customer must pay for necessary repairs in order to get the logic board replaced at no cost.

Apple has not publicly announced this repair policy, likely due to what it believes is a very small number of affected customers. While we are confident this information is accurate, as it comes from a consistently reliable source, we cannot guarantee that all Apple employees will acknowledge the policy.

This is at least the third repair program that Apple has introduced in the past five weeks, alongside its 2015 15-inch MacBook Pro battery recall and replacement program and 2016 13-inch MacBook Pro display backlight service program.

Id guess no more problems than for any other electronics manufacturer. Macrumors just reports them so the issues are out in the open.

I'm not buying that. The number of replacement programs and issues, including a replacement program released the same day as the product, isn't normal. There is also something to be said about the premium Apple charges and how that used to mean higher reliability. There have been "a small number of customers/cases/etc." with just about every new refresh or product for awhile.

I do like how Apple stands by the product and offers these programs, and have always found their customer service to be excellent. When just about every new or refreshed product has some problem that requires a replacement program, it points to there being some breakdown in design/QC/something else.

While I agree with you (hard not to be after three! generations in a row of defective keyboards, for instance), I think this particular case could be “the boy who cried wolf” and actually affect a small number of users.
 
It's a consequence of putting profit over quality. Something Apple has done since Jobs has died.

It is good that they have identified a problem and are willing to fix it. But if they don’t make it public and tell customers how to know if their device has the problem, it is rather useless.
I'm sure it will be made public eventually. Didn't the keyboard program start out as sort of a whisper?

The worst is the most recent MacBook Pros which were in the keyboard replacement programme before they were even on sale.

Apple now ships products with day one known defects. It's as if Samsung still went ahead with the Fold launch but had a replacement programme.
I don't think the 2019's have a "known" keyboard issue....but they might end up having a problem, so why not add them to the program with the other's from this generation? Seems like the most prudent thing to do, no?

I don't think Apple KNOWINGLY ships design defects. They've created 4 versions of the butterfly keyboard. They are trying to fix the problem. Are they doing a good job? That's a different question, but the idea Apple is just putting KNOWN trash in the market is absurd.

I assume your comment was hyperbole and for effect.

And Apple has an SVP of hardware engineering for what then? Is he just a seat warmer in the board room?

my MacBook Air 2018 had artifacts on start up and Genius Bar gave my another out of the box. My new one has started exhibiting same artifacts. I think this is not a "small" number of MacBooks. I had to have the logic board in my MacBook Air (2018) replaced after I installed Windows 10. Free, thankfully. The T2 chip failed and the computer could no longer boot into macOS. Internet recovery wouldn't work either. Too bad they give no information about what is actually going wrong here.

It may not be that simple. Probably Ive gets to decide the design and dimensions and then the engineers have to work with what they are dictated.
