Like I said in another post, the Apple drones are never allowed to answer, "I don't know", never.
They are allowed to lie, "It won't work" or parrot back the Apple brochure and that is it.

I'm sure a software update for the iPhone could make the mic and volume controls usable

etc.
I just don't get the big deal about Apple getting around to re-releasing their in-ear headphones. Sure the remote is cool, but unless they're a huge upgrade in fit, comfort, and audio quality from the old in-ear headphones, they're still a rip-off. I had the originals, and the sound was decent but nothing special, and they started falling apart after less than 6 months, being treated quite well.
If you're really that desperate for a remote, go for it, otherwise get some decent earphones from Shure, etc.

Justin R.: Thank you for visiting the Apple Store. We appreciate your business. If you would like more help, please chat with us again.
And I'm sure you're wrong. The new iPods have a different headphone jack with an extra connector for the volume controls. The only way the iPhone can have that is with a hardware update.
Newtman these are a HUGE upgrade over the old ones in every imaginable way. Each earpiece contains two separate drivers, pretty incredible for the price comparable to others on the market.

What a waste of time and how completely disrespectful.
Why do you feel you are owed an answer to ridiculous questions? Yes, they are silly.
Does Apple not have the right to build product specific components and list only what they want them to be compatible with? And with your limited knowledge you expect answers to things you don't understand at all?
Do you have some super-secret internal hardware knowledge of differences between the iPhone and iPod Touch, or are you just making a guess and then badgering an employee with lame questions which any normal person would know they wouldn't have answers for anyway?
I feel bad for these employees that have to put up with crap from these people.
Obviously, they said it is not designed for the iPhone -- so get off your hind-end and goto an Apple store and look at it yourself or wait for someone else to test it if you are that sure it will work just fine.
Sorry it's so inconvenient for you to goto an Apple store, but I am sure that it's Apple's fault as well that you don't live closer to one.
I've also heard that these new earphones are not compatible with a 120v socket, so why don't you call them up and badger them about that? I mean it's only common sense that it will fit in just fine with one good whack of a hammer.
Or are you implying that Apple is either being secretive about this hidden compatibility or are completely dumb to the fact that it might work on another product in their lineup?
I wrote a specific linux / unix application years ago and of course I get the whole "why won't it run on windows" guys calling all of the time. They want a list of all of the reasons it won't run on windows and why not... The answer and it is very appropriate: "We said it won't run on windows and we don't support it on Windows. If you want to try it, good luck but it doesn't change the fact that we said it won't run and we don't support it on Windows."
... I don't even know where to end ... What a joke. And this over a pair of headphones...
Yes, I see the press, but there's plenty of other dual driver earphones out there that suck compared to some of the single driver earphones. Maybe they're great, but I'm not buying it until I see an actual review. I'm an apple fan boy at heart, but apple has never failed to leave me disappointed when it comes to accessories.
