Thanks for the foolish, long winded post. I expect employees of a company to know which of their products are compatible with one another. The fact that I was able to find the answer myself on that employees own website shows that he was lacking knowledge that he should have had or should have been able to find out.

If it already said on the website why did you badger him about it?

I had the originals, and the sound was decent but nothing special, and they started falling apart after less than 6 months, being treated quite well.

I've had mine for over a year and they still work and are nowhere near "falling apart". I use them almost every day and leave them wrapped around my iphone all week long (unplugging them on the weekends). So they're neither pampered nor abused.

These are completely different phones, and are in a different class and price range ($40 vs $80)

Oh hey, you're welcome. I'm a firm believer that those who didn't learn social skills at an early age shouldn't be left behind. I'll continue to help whenever possible. ;-)

So when are these likely to hit the Apple Stores? I'd prefer to buy them in person.

Good for you, that doesn't change my experience with them.

A tip of my hat to you, sir. Gave me a good chortle and for that I thank you.

Well as it happens (and was easy to guess) the website was completely wrong for a start...

Phazer

Really?

*Compatibility Information

The remote and mic are supported only by iPod nano (4th generation), iPod classic (120GB), and iPod touch (2nd generation). Audio is supported by all iPod models.

That pretty much spells it out really.

take from it what you will:

Hi, my name is Justin R.. Welcome to Apple!
#

You: Hello
#

You: I am interested in the new Apple in-ear headphones

To those of you calling jmwein rude and unfair: exchange every "Apple" in that chat to "Microsoft" (and soforth) and tell me you wouldn't be snickering about how completely worthless a company Microsoft is. jmwein wasn't exactly friendly, but the guy from Apple Support wasn't exactly helpful either.

I went through two of the old ones... neither pair "fell apart" but both pairs slowly became silent over a few months. Based on that personal experience I'd advise caution on these new ones also.

Regardless of the company, theres still a person at the other end of the phone.
Its not like jmwein had a faulty product, or had been told by a different Apple employee that the headphones would work, had bought them and then found out otherwise

a little off subject but I once asked apple why their ram was so much more expensive than all other ram from all other companies. ($400 vs. $75)

I was told they used higher quality chips.

I have never found a helpful apple employee. Still searching though.

read previous posts....duh.

To all those who keep complaining about the mic not working on the new in-ear buds.....just read the 2nd page of these posts. There's a link to an Apple support document that SHOWS that the audio, center control button (next track, back a track), and the mic ARE supported by both the iPhone EDGE and 3G. The ONLY thing not supported is the volume control (+/- buttons). Please do some reading before posting whiny b**ching......over some $79 ear phones. I've ordered mine already. I'm looking forward to them.

That information is incorrect AGAIN! Audio, mic, AND remote (other than volume controls) are all compatible with the iPhone!! Stop defending Apple when they are so blatantly wrong. It makes you look foolish!

Thank for a sensible post!! I ordered mine as well and I'm looking forward to getting them!!

Off topic, yes, but to defend the Apple employees, the real reason for the price difference is that Apple doesn't want the price to vary on a daily basis, so they set a high price so they can remain profitable despite price fluctuations. If you were in an Apple employee's shoes, how would you explain that to a customer without violating some sort of company policy?

To be good at customer service you have to be a good BS'er. Some ppl are, some people aren't.

incorrect how? as it doesn't mention volume controls, one would assume thats part of the "remote"
I'm not defending apple at all, it just pays to do a little research.
Because it doesn't mention that any of those features (mic, remote) are compatible with the iPhone it would be safe to assume it won't work.

But you already knew this as you stated earlier that the iPhone has a different headphone jack

I wonder if the mic and volume controls will work in the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros. It is already nice having one set of headphones that work as a headset on my iPhone and as a Skype headset/iTunes controller on my MacBook.

OMG WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOUR READING COMPREHENSION!?!?! Every function of the new headphones WILL work with the iPhone 3G EXCEPT the volume controls! That is the only extra thing that is used in the new headphone jack in the new iPods. The remote BUTTON DOES work. The microphone DOES work. So if I assumed the website and the Apple employee were correct, I wouldn't have purchased these headphones. But because I did further research and found out that both were wrong, these headphones were perfect for me and I did buy them!

probably not, apple would rather you buy their remote

I understand that most of the functionality of the ear buds are compatible with my first gen iPhone. But, my concern is whether I will need a plug adapter to accommodate the recessed port at the top of my phone, or do all Apple headphones fit the first gen iPhone.

alright calm down! seeing as your in bad mood go phone up apple and give them s**t for being wrong.
so you actually purchased the headphones? or is there still something wrong with my reading comprehension?
frankly your quite unpleasant, i wouldn't surprised if the apple employee you spoke to just lied to you in order to get rid of you

LOL sorry Joe, didn't mean to be an ******* again. I'm actually not a mean person I swear :D. Anyway, yes I did purchase them online but hey won't be delivered for 2-3 weeks. I'll post a review when I get them.

2-3 weeks ouch, they better be good, all the apple headphones i've owned have died. the iPhone headphones lasted a shocking 3 weeks
I would assume you'll be able to change tracks/answer phone calls with a few clicks of the remote?
