2-3 weeks ouch, they better be good, all the apple headphones i've owned have died. the iPhone headphones lasted a shocking 3 weeks
I would assume you'll be able to change tracks/answer phone calls with a few clicks of the remote?

Yea supposedly it will work the same way the button works now...
1 click stop/play
2 clicks next track
3 clicks previous track

Then you also could use the microphone for calls. If the headphones are as good as their specs its actually not a bad price at all.

as long as the quality/life is dramatically better i'd be happy, generally I abstain from buying apple headphones (although i do miss the mic/remote i had)

That was one of the best conversations I've seen with Apple before! Hopefully enough talk about how rediculous this is (their not supporting the iPhone) will at least get some sort of statement out of Apple or gain their attention.

I have a set of Apple in ear head phones I bought four years ago. They sound okay and have held up well. The buds that came with my day one iPhone lasted until two weeks ago. The mic gave up the ghost, I can hear callers, but they can not hear me. My daughter, who is very hard on things, had them for a week prior to the mic dying so she may be the culprit. My wife's day one ear buds still work fine. The ear buds that came with my Gen III iPod crapped out in a month. I guess the old saw about good ones and bad ones really holds true here. I look forward to trying the new in ear buds. I have the old remote for my iPod and I only use it when the iPod is docked on the speakers on my desk at work, I have never used it on the move so to speak. No volume controls is no problem with the volume control on the side of the iPhone anyway.

To those of you calling jmwein rude and unfair: exchange every "Apple" in that chat to "Microsoft" (and soforth) and tell me you wouldn't be snickering about how completely worthless a company Microsoft is. jmwein wasn't exactly friendly, but the guy from Apple Support wasn't exactly helpful either.

That's actually a very good way to put it. Sure, jmwein was a little bit of a jerk there (knowing he wasn't going to get a straight answer from Apple), but the rep -- like most reps -- in fact, did not give a straight answer. Tactful? No. Helpful? Ultimately yes, as we finally learn that not all the information has become available to even the Apple employees on the low-end of the totem pole.

For anyone who want to use their own (descent) in-ear headphones with Apple's iPhone cable/remote/mic, check out this tutorial bij Elco Jacobs from the http://gathering.tweakers.net Apple forum.

I've done this myself and it's so easy and works so great, someone could set up a nice little business for themselves modding earbuds like this.

here we go again.....

You obviously are behind.....the iPhone IS supported EXCEPT FOR THE VOLUME CONTROLS! (read this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3310). I swear....I'm an Apple fanboy, and I complained when the buggy 2.0 software came out for the iPhone (I think we all did)....but I've NEVER seen such aimless b*tching in my life.....READ BEFORE YOU WHINE!!!

Good for you, that doesn't change my experience with them.

Same here - I'm on my 4th pair (iPhone purchased in Sept. '07). Usually what happens
is the rubber around the edge of the speaker delaminates, despite being babied,
and they have NEVER been subjected to sweat or other possible contaminants...

Just took this screen shot from Apple's website. Are you all saying that Apple's own website is wrong? They state that the new headphones only support "AUDIO" for all iPods. The mic and remote do not work with the iPhone.

OMFG! You are wrong just give it up. There is a compatibility document on Apple's website that goes into detail about what is and what is not compatible for each pair of headphones they sell!

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3310

Read footnote #5: "Mic and Center button supported; volume (+/-) buttons are not supported"

END OF STORY!!

There is. They're called Ultimatebuds. Even though they only do a few "mods," they are out there. But yeah, that's what I did as well. My V-moda cord went to crap a while back and so I "modded" them to my Apple iPhone headset. Still working like a charm.

To me, it's the best of both worlds: V-moda has nice earpieces, but crappy cords and cord construction. Apple has solid workmanship on their cords but so-so quality sound.

After testing a similar-style pair that came with my dad's Sony phone (proprietary connector, so no dice on the iPhone), I like the concept of these. They aren't as annoying in your ears and technically should have better sound. I'm not one who thinks the come-with-it iPhone headphones are bad. They make using the phone MUCH BETTER and are decent for audio.

I just wish that I *knew* a firmware upgrade would allow the volume control to work on these new headphones. I don't get the incompatibility since the iPod touch and iPhone are about as different as a Toyota Camry CE and a Camry LE.

Anyone got their hands on the new in-ear headphones in stores yet? Funny that the "Coming soon" text is still visible in the online store page.

Btw, shouldn't this thread be in the iPod section or even the MacRumors news section? Somewhat hard to navigate to this thread without clicking the link in the front page..

Oh, I'M WRONG????? Did I say I was right? I'm only reading what's on Apple's website so I guess Apple's wrong? But which part is wrong? The support doc or their website? The website says different.

Dude, I don't at all appreciate your tone with me. You seem like you're just a pissed off customer that wants what they may not get. I saw your rude chat with the Apple employee. If ANYONE is completely wrong, it's YOU. :p

So let's get this straight

Audio Quality

The original post was about the IN-EAR headphones. These are different to the previous Apple headphones that didn't have 'the little rubber bits' at the ends, hence the name 'IN-EAR'. They kinda, you know go in your ear, not just sit just outside them. Also, they have a 'woofer' and a 'tweeter' in them, as opposed to just one speaker, like the previous headphones. All that said, there are TWO new sets of headphones coming from Apple:

1. The ones with the little rubber bits that have a woofer and a tweeter and new remote

2. The ones that look like the old ones but have a new remote

THIS EXPLAINS THE PRICE DIFFERENCE

Now, onto iPhone compatibility.

The iPhone has different hardware in it compared to the newer iPods (read: the little hole you plug your headphones into is DIFFERENT in the iPhone and the new iPods. This means that the iPod ones can do more things than the iPhone ones. Crazy, I know. So, the iPods can use the microphone, the middle button AND the volume control (because they have a special little band in their hole that the iPhone doesn't)

The iPhone can do these with BOTH of the new headphones (the ones that say YES after them, they can't do the ones that say NO after them, in case you were wondering...)

Audio: YES (duh)
Microphone: YES (yay!!!)
Middle Button: YES (woo hoo no change here!)
Volume: No (so we just have better quality headphones with rubber bits and a woofer and a tweeter, which is better than nothing)

"Two cents:

My iPhone EDGE headphones (purchased February 2008, and well looked after) are coming apart at the microphone. Well, the wires don't seem to be as everything is working fine, but the rubber tubing has pulled away from either side of the mic/remote unit. It's a bit disappointing, but considering they get used EVERY DAY I'm not going to cry about it. Just wish replacements were less than £18.60 (new VAT price I think).

I think that covers it. Cheers.

Say What???

Excuse my French...but I have never heard anything so RETARDED...as to why Apple would design and produce a pair of high-end in-ear headphones,
that HAS a mic, BUT THAT IS NOT COMPATIBLE with the iPhone...another Apple product!!

They have been making horrible headphones for years and now finally a step up with a mic, volume control etc. and it doesn't work with the only device that really needs a mic!!

I am sorry Apple...as I said....RETARDED!

Head-fi in flames

headfi have been in flames waiting for these. they will not sound bad; that is impossible. however, will they sound good? probably they will be very decent.

but for 80$, no other company have given 2 armature drivers of any type. and a mic. and a remote control. i will be selling my sleek audio sa6 soon and the proceeds from that may fund a pair of unassuming phones.

what i like other than the marketing for the hifi is that apple don't market their products as the best sounding. if they are, then they are quiet about it. however the consumer sadly awaits for a company like shure or futursonics to tell them it sounds best before buying.

i cannot wait to hear these. they cost about as much as the cheapest of single armature phones but have so much more. apple may strike this market hard and make other companies have to lower the prices of their ridiculously priced iems and canalphones.

Dude....if you'd read above, you'd see the mic DOES work with these new in-ear headphones......please see my earlier posts. There's a new support doc on apple.com that was posted TODAY that says the only thing that is not functional with iPhone is the VOLUME CONTROLS. Damn it....I'm getting tired of repeating myself.

so they're not FULLY compatible. you can use the headphones for audio, the mic for phone calls, and the center button to answer and hang up calls. no volume control.... i feel as if you came onto these forums just to complain.

apple headphones do suck in that they usually fall apart before a year's end, but other than that i appreciate the sound and style. $29US... may not be worth it to some (or most), but if you pay it then you do get what you pay for: decent sound and great style.

i just placed my order for them. i will report back what works with my 3g iphone and if they are any good. i will be comparing them to my denon c700 earphones
