They were sold out of these at my local stores, they apparently each went through an entire box of them in just a few hours.

They also tried to tell me that the volume control would be made to work with the 3G via a FW update, which just made me laugh... Apple fix something in FW when they can try to sell you a new product for that functionality in another six months? Too funny!

I bought a pair on friday and they sounded fine (im not expert on sound quality so i wont say good or bad) but the remote stopped working completely within 5 hours so i took mine back the next day. Hope everyone else had better luck!

get it replaced...my remote works absolutely fine a week later...i think you just got unlucky

I might eventually get another pair but right now i think i will wait on them. I would still probably recommend them but don't need them at this point.

Any idea if these will be available from best buy? I'm sitting on a gift card that I need to use and I would love to pick up a pair of these, I'm sick of the headphones that came with the 3G.

I think they probably will since they carry the other apple products

Don't be so sure. The iPhone doesn't have the correct hardware in the headphone jack to take advantage of the tip of the metal on the new headphones (which control the volume). You won't see this possible until the next iPhone revision at the earliest. NO firmware will make this possible.

True, I didn't think of that.

Do you have a picture of the tip? Or does anyone.

Edit:

Found a picture...

Tip looks identical to the iPhone headphones, unless I'm missing something.

Yeah that's what I don't get about this whole thing because as you and another person in a different thread posted, the connector is exactly the same. There is not an extra ring as far as I can see. Maybe I'm missing something, but I think it will be possible to make the volume control compatible through a firmware update.

so are these iphone compatible? Can you answer a phone call from the cord of the headphones like the ones that come with the phone?

And if not. WTF was apple thinking?

You guys reccommending the other heardphones.

"I am thinking about buying an $80,000 BMW." (Luxury Car)
"If you are going to spend $80,000 buy a Viper! It's faster!" (Not the same features)

How ridiculous..

The in-ear headphone is fine, I don't mind the missing volume changing feature on my iPhone 3G.

I don't think your example is a fair analogy. The BMW _is_ better than the Viper in many aspects. On the other hand, how are the Apple in-ear headphones any better than, say, the Shure counterpart?

I only saw the first two links, maybe I missed another version? The ones I saw did not have a microphone and remote are pretty important differences.

I agree a built-in microphone and remote are important features. Fortunately, Shure sells an adapter-type microphone/remote that plugs right into the existing Shure headphone. :)

For the record, I'd prefer the sound of the Sennheiser in-ear headphones over that of the Shure.

I prefer Bose and Sennheiser over Shure. Though I will admit, I haven't had any extensive use with Shure. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate nice headphones, I've spent way too much money on them in the past, but I don't think this thread was titled "What are the best sounding head phones for $80?", so I don't see the relevance.

Edit: I just found a Shure adapter, it was priced at $50, maybe there are others, but that would make them $130. No where near comparable to the Apple's.

My girlfriend wanted to get these for me for Xmas but they are sold out all over San francisco bay area. I told her to order online since now it's 7 to 10 days before shipping unlike 2 to 3 weeks. Until these other brand comes with a button to answer calls, pause, play, skip, I'm sticking with apple's. Thanks for the review I'm excited and can't wait till they arrive.

FINALLY found a pair in stock around LA. letting them break in for 8-10 hours now. initial test sound okay, fit well, button is nice. the tips of the base seem awfully skinny. hopefully they hold up to normal use.
could never stand the sound or fit of the original ipod buds or any of the revisions. loved the sound and wrap around ear style of my shure e2c's and later preferred the triple flanged tips of the etymotic er6i. tried a pair of el-cheapo skull candy headphones which were waaay too bass heavy. would still be using my shures if one speaker didn't blow out (3-4 year old headphones) or my etymonics if they weren't stolen. ah well, time for something new.
i'm definitely not an audiophile, but have had a handful of mid-range in-ear headphones. will wait until they break in before i put in some real listening time. if anything, they'll be good casual listening headphones when listening to my iphone.

My Apple In-Ear Headphones showed up today and I have to say that I am impressed so far. Good, but not overwhelming, bass along with excellent mid and high range response. The sound stage is large and sounds three dimensional.

The medium ear tips (buds or whatever you call them) fit just right.

I look forward to hearing how they sound after 30 or so hours of play time.

Grabbed the last pair at the Apple store in Syracuse, NY. One little white box left that one of the sales guys had to find. Love them! Nice build and of course sound quality. Interested in this firmware business as the in-ear's do have the same number of bands as the stock 3G buds...

Work great in my 3G, and obviously the only thing that does not work are the volume controls.

Actually the outer metal conductor is supposed to be what sends volume signal information to the ipod.

So, since the iphone is missing the contact on its end for this it's unlikely apple will get it working in FW.
