UK story - sent via pre-labelled shipping bag:

I sent off my phone on Tuesday. UPS missed a connection at Castle Donington so it got there a day late - it arrived in the Netherlands yesterday morning. It has been on Diagnosing product since early yesterday afternoon.

Looking at the stories here, I could be waiting a good few days yet!

It's like clock watching, the worst thing you can do is keep refreshing the Repair Status page :(

Currently using a 3GS with a Pay as you Go SIM, so have Mobile data turned off most of the time, and very few apps installed.

Last Saturday is dropped my iphone off at a premium reseller as we don't have any Apple Stores in Belgium.

No loaner and no case or repair id either.
Called in today and they said the phone was still in diagnostic status...

I do hope I'll be getting another phone as mine had some small wifi issues...

So I'm not the only one who's refreshing the page all day :D

Sent mine on monday, arrived on tuesday and also been on "Diagnosing" since.

Had some small hopes to get it back before the weekend....

That would bug me if it had been on diagnosing for 3 days. It's almost like you could do with a progress bar of each step - but I'm sure if I saw that it still wouldn't stop me refreshing the page :p

Can someone who has had their phone returned confirm whether you get a report of what has been done to it? E.g. if other elements have been looked at/repaired?

They couldn't fix mines, so they ended up giving me a new phone.

did they tell you what else was wrong with it other than the sleep/wake button? my battery is shot (only get about 2.5hrs of usage and % jumps around) and I would sometimes lose network connection. I've replaced my sim a few times and always resetting my network settings.

No they didn't say, but my phone was in perfect condition. Only the sleep/wake button didn't work. It was listed on work order as "perfect" condition also. I don't know if this has anything to do with it. I kinda wish they had fixed it, because now I have to buy another glass screen protector.

Dropped my phone at Covent Garden on Friday 02 May, and it's still in the 'being repaired' stage. That being said, it didn't even get to where it had to go until 07 May.

Meanwhile my loaner continues to fire up the old screen of death randomly, normally just as I really, really need to use it.

Interesting. Was your switch confirmed bad before this step, or did you just go in and ask for the trade?

While it is tantalizing to think that one might be able to get a substantial discount on a iP6 when it comes out as some theorize, I can see the enhanced trade-in value offer being rescinded, or restricted somehow by the time it launches.

If not, I have until December to have my switch fail, so it could work out very well if the terms remain the same, though it is doubtful.

Nope, just went in and asked!

So you used the $350 to get a 16GB 5S? Did that require renewing your contract?

I did use it to get a 5s, no it didn't renew contract because I paid full retail for the 5s.

----------

You mean you bought a 5s with the apple credit that came with your 5?

Correct, I thought that was implied.

Got mine back and apparently the battery was swapped because it says 1388mv cap and 0 charge cycles now.

Well it took 11 days, but I've finally received my repaired phone. After reading some people's stories on here I was hoping for more than what I got.

Lock button's fixed so that's priority, but my lightning port has been shoddy for a while now and I was crossing my fingers that they'd repair that too (or give me a new device :D) Unfortunately they didn't. I was hoping that's what made it take 11 days!

Oh well, I got the most important thing repaired for free, so I'm happy overall.

Still waiting on the box

I'm still waiting on my empty box from Apple. Was supposed to be here on the 7th and the status said it had been shipped. I called and they said they were short on boxes. Apparently they just got 13 boxes in so mine should be here Monday.

Point of the story is if you have a way to get to the store that would be a MUCH better option.

I called the morning of May 5th and got my empty box May 6th by noon. I guess I got lucky. It was at the repair shop yesterday at noon.

Let us remember that it takes 4-6 days from the time it is received by the repair centre, not from when one drops it off at an Apple store. Those in the UK like me, who jumped on this bandwagon last weekend, only had our phones at the repair centre Tuesday-Wednesday this week. This probably means that it will not be until some point next week at the earliest when they come back. Especially if reports of them repairing more than just the sleep/wake button connection are true.

Mine arrived at the repair center the day after I dropped it off (since I only live an hour from the repair center) and was sent back to my store the day before I picked it up. That's still 8 days at the repair center.

well i know someone physically had my iPhone yesterday because today i got my sim card back. i guess i forgot to remove it before i shipped it. i figured i did because i couldn't find it.

Picked up my iPhone 5 today as the local store called to say it was fixed. I dropped it off last Thursday and picked it up today, Friday.

Be sure to check your phone carefully when you pick it up. I had a couple of issues:

- about 5 little bubbles along one side of the screen (not on the active part of the screen, at the very edge by the phone frame. Barely noticeable, but they were not there when I dropped it off.

- a big piece of some foreign material covering over 1/2 of the camera lens (inside the phone).

The technician at the Apple store took it to the back and fixed the issues for the most part. He could not get 2 of of the bubbles out (said it was just how the screen was sitting on the frame) but they were so small I could hardly notice them and they were right on the edge of the glass. I don't really care as my case covers the edge anyway. I had to hold it very close to see them so will never notice them in daily use.

The technician said they normally don't share all that was done, but he showed me the notes from the repair.

- flex cable assembly (for sleep / wake and volume buttons) replaced.

- battery replaced (did not pass their test at the repair facility).

- camera module replaced (did not pass their test at the repair facility).

- screen replaced (forget why he said that was replaced)

The best news is the problem with my volume down button not working is now fixed!!! This was the biggest issue I was having and had hoped this replacement program would fix that.

Overall, I'm very satisfied w/ the repair. I've had my phone back for several hours today and my battery is still at 99%... nice to have a new, fresh battery in my 17-month old iPhone.

it seems most are getting their battery replaced along with the sleep/wake button. I wonder why the camera though?

Well the camera is right there next to the sleep/wake button, so maybe it could also have been affected in some way during the assembly process. It is also possible that Apple are throwing additional checks/repairs, since they already have it disassembled, "on the house" to improve customer experience. Not sure my experience is improved by delays getting the phone back due to work that I didn't ask for or agree to, but that's that.

Re-visiting this again i understand things can go faulty, and nothing is perfect, but this just demonstrates that Apple does not have a good QA department for testing.

This was the complaint i made about two busted replacement iPhones i had, but i ended up getting free 5s. :)

However, the problem lies in that Apple does not test every since phone in full.

These programs would not be needed if Apple has a top notch QA department..

If i see a constant line of products all need replacement programs, then something is seriously wrong here. No matter what anyone thinks. And unfortunately, one complaint by me may get me what i want, but trouble is, no one else does it in mass.... so Apple just goes on "as normal"

Thinking about sending another email to Tim Cook tonight about the quality of Apple's products. and i'll keep doing it, till something get's done.

well, they're accepting the problem and fixing it. i don't know of another company who would do that with items being out of warranty?

True, but u'r missing the entire point..

None of these programs would be needed in the first place, However, out of warranty's repairs it's up to the customer, not Apple to recall every one.

Just think everyone started saying "I have a faulty battery".

If a recall is done for "out of warranties" then why did it take so long ? That would be my first question

That's one year limited, plus 2 years of Apple care if you have bought it.

Did you expect anything different? Once a device is outside of its warranty period, the onus is on the customer to initiate any action.

For devices outside of warranty, Apple did not have to do anything, so your "so long" argument is moot. However, they probably felt that it would be beneficial for them in the long term to offer this type of repair. This is especially true if sleep/wake button behaviour was found to degrade over time and would have started malfunctioning outside of the warranty period.

You do not have to buy Apple Care to have a warranty that is beyond Apple's standard 1 year. In quite a few countries, statutory warranty is 2 years or more. Apple Care just provides additional coverage for situations not covered by the warranty.
