Oh well. I guess I'll be selling my Apple shares in the not-too-distant future, since obviously this is a firm that doesn't fully appreciate Jobs's legacy, and which has little idea what's in store for them a few short years from now when "the next great thing" becomes today's average thing. The money will start spiraling outwards then, just like it did in the 90's.

It's like watching a bunch of little kids who just left home and went to college with a big wad of daddy's money.

Steve Jobs is still in charge, he is the chairman of Apple, signs off every major decision, most likely has power of veto

The idea Jobs knew nothing about this is pure stand up comedy

Does NO ONE on this board have a modicum of humor?

I work for one, I sat on the board of another, and helped create a third. There are not a million regulations. It is also completely false a Not-For-Profit can make a profit.... it is all in how about how the money is spent and how the money is dispersed if the entity ceases to exist.

Yes, a CEO of the American Red Cross took home $651,957 in salary in 2005, a more recent CEO took home more than $450,000. This is not "profit." It's "salary."

Who are you kidding?

people who thinks Jobs has no knowledge of this is out of their mind.

He quit as CEO to become the boss of the CEO.

Steve Jobs' lack of a public record of philanthropy was highlighted just last week, with U2 singer Bono coming to Jobs' defense and noting that Apple has contributed "tens of millions of dollars" to the (Product)RED campaign against AIDS.

The only difference here is Jobs like to donate without the publicity and Cook likes to tell the world about it. Both gave and will give millions as CEO of Apple.

Not that either had to, Apple is a business and not a charity but it's nice both Jobs did and Cook will give a little.

Knows about it? Or approved of it? Or approves of it? You can't be daddy forever. I'm sure he knows this too...

Nobody knows what role if any he had in this...

Exactly, he could sack Cook right now if he wanted, Steve is still the ultimate boss of Apple, I am sure he has video conferencing at home and still makes important decisions, no way would Jobs be kept in the dark about something like this, he would have signed it off and rubber stamped it

How are you demi-god and not banned?
He's a demi-god cause he purchased the title.
he's not banned cause at least someone recognises the amazing contributive posts he makes on the forum. I notice them in the topic I read. They are always a nice read.

Thats the problem. What if someone donates to lets say... Al Queda? I know its extreme but it brings up the point... will Apple blindly match contributions or will it use discretion much like they approve App Store Apps.

I don't think Al Qaeda is a qualified charitable organization...

Id' be happy if whoever is responsible for bringing this to fruition at Apple got demoted.

Um. Chances are it was the new CEO of the company. Good luck with that.

And if all it would take to make you happy was his demotion... you must too be a very simple guy.

By the way, Apple's Employees aren't going to be donating billions to charity. Apple can afford it. Quit whining.

So what if the employees think it's important. Is it?

IMO, this is kind of like the saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Something may be important to one employee, but not another. Why must it be important to everyone? And if only a few people think it is & everyone else doesn't or vice versa, should the few people be scorned?

Just remember Ferengi rule of acquisition number 144: "There's nothing wrong with charity ... as long as it winds up in your pocket."

This is amazing! How you send the money?
Read the FAQ. ;)

Back on topic... who cares "why" this new policy was put in place or "who" was in on it.
Pointless drivel.

Glad to see any company step up and do charity donation matching.
My company does it, but they have an approved list of charities they will match.
If your charity is not on the list, you can submit it for review and addition to the list.

So here is my plan.
1. Form a 503 (c) (3) corporation - 500.00 at most
2. Make friends with an Apple employee at my local genius bar
3. Have him donate 10,000 to my non-profit
4. Collect an additional 10,000 from Apple
5. Give him 12,000 back
6. Profit 7,500

And when you get investigated, you and your friend end up in a Federal PMITA prison.

With Jobs at the helm this wouldn't have happened. Apple's days as Rearden Steel are on the decline.

But you DO donate the money yourself. Then Apple donates some too. That's the whole point. They donate to causes that their employees think are important.

Add to that Apple doing this is nothing special. It high time they started to as it is a fairly standard pratics of most big companies to match donations up to a certain amount per year.

Top it off 10k is really not that much money over all when compared to the cost of an employee. On top of that you do not even have to worry about them donating that much money until they are making say 100k a year salary.

A 100k a year employee cost around 140-150k a year to the company when you factor in the burden cost. So adding another 10k to that of which really only 65% of it is added to your cost. It drops down to what less than 5% of the cost of the employee over all and most of them are not even going to use it all.

My guess is Apple is going to budget may 1-2k per full time employee. That is chump change to the cost of a full time employee with benefits.

Methinks you don't know the role of the board of directors.

Did you miss the press release where Steve Jobs was promoted to chairman of Apple ?

Methinks you don't know the role of the board of directors.

The chairman in the company I work for runs the business from top to bottom, he has a CEO to handle the day to day **** but the chairman has the ultimate say in everything and can fire the CEO in an instant, indeed our last CEO was fired in March by the chairman.

Jobs founded Apple, Apple is his baby, it has been his life for nearly 40 years, the idea that Jobs will sit at home playing Angry Birds HD on his iPad and not take any decisions is beyond ridiculous, I may not know the role of the board but I have read books on Steve Jobs and the Steve I know will only stop working for Apple the day he dies
