Barring quite a change in UI direction from Apple, I've pretty much already decided to just ride on Sequoia for quite a while.

It might end up pushing me to grab an M4 MBA at some point as my next laptop since that is Sequoia compatible also.

For now though, I continue to use my 2015 MBP 15" on Sequoia as my travel machine.
Unless I’m wrong, you might need to hurry with that MBA. Apple allows to downgrade to the OS the computer shipped with, so once MBAs are shipping with Tahoe, that’s it – they’ll update the firmware.

I got an open box M4 MBA recently, it was on Sequoia, and that’s where it’s staying.

It's ok, I'll be buying preowned from someone who already took it in the shorts on BTO pricing.

So I gave Apple support a call. the advisor kept transferring me around, but with the 3rd person, he was able to see the differences between US and Canadian websites. He put me on hold to speak with his boss, and after 15 mins of waiting came back and straight up said it's a "marketing tactic" and that they don't want to market the M1 chip because it's "too old" but will still run Apple Intelligence as it currently is.
My guess is this will be the requirements for updated Siri features.

I don’t think Apple Intelligence will ever surpass ChatGPT or Gemini. I can already use both effortlessly on my MacBook Pro M1 Pro, and all I really need is quick, reliable answers. I have no interest in having AI deeply integrated into my system — so honestly, I’m glad the M1 Pro won’t be supported.

Apple just trying to say “Still on M1 Mac? Please update your device”.
My M1 Air turns 5 in February. I'm going to keep paying $70/year for AppleCare+ to really squeeze the juice out. They already replaced the logic board and screen a couple years ago. And I'm due for a new battery - AC+ cost is totally worth it. Probably why they rolled out the new "Apple Care One" with a deductible, the freakin' bean counters!

Looks like the compatibility page in America has been revised/reverted/updated back to including the M1 as being compatible.

Think it might be an error. Definitely all the Apple Silicon Macs are more than capable of running it. Of course going forward, more features might be limited to 16GB models.

It is also possible for Apple to limit access to newer M series Macs. That might help drive upgrades.

You got them to fix it!

Update: It took a day, but Apple has now corrected its Apple Intelligence device compatibility list to show support for the earliest Apple silicon Macs. The original article follows.

Apple's website is causing some confusion among Mac owners, and for good reason – its device compatibility listing for Apple Intelligence appears to have dropped support for M1 Macs.

apple-intelligence-erroneous-support-list.jpg

The U.S. version of its Apple Intelligence webpage has been updated at the bottom to list "M2 or later" Mac models as eligible for the AI features, replacing the long-standing "M1 and later" requirement.

However, regional versions – including the UK and Canada sites – continue to reference M1 Macs as compatible with Apple Intelligence. Meanwhile, Apple's support page, titled "How to get Apple Intelligence" and dated November 10, still lists "Mac with M1 or later" under the device requirements.

Looking at the difference between the live webpage and the last archived snapshot from November 6, Apple appears to have intentionally changed Apple Vision Pro from "M2" to "M2 or later" to reflect the recent launch of the Vision Pro with M5 chip. But whoever did the edit also appears to have erroneously changed the Macs in the list to "M2 or later" as well. (Another clue is that Apple never released an M2 iMac.)

On the Canada and UK pages, Apple has not yet updated the Vision Pro to "M2 or later", which is a further sign that this is exactly what has happened. We expect Apple will correct the U.S. webpage later today once it learns of the mistake.

Apple Intelligence began rolling out in October 2024, bringing generative and contextual AI tools across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It touts a range of capabilities, including composing text and emails, generating images, summarizing documents and texts, and more.

We are still waiting for Apple to release a more advanced version of Siri with contextual awareness that has been promised since last year. Apple is expected to roll out the new version of ‌Siri‌ around March or April 2026.

(Thanks, Jason!)

LOL - I have a Macbook Pro with M1. I've always used Microsoft Copilot and still do. Apple Intelligence is not that great anyway.
