I keep hearing that but why nobody explains why?

Because it's not true.

If you use a monitor calibration device that hangs on top of your display the fact that this is glass should not affect it at all. The only way it could affect it is if the glass is far away from the actually screen.

There won't be any problems with these.

Specs?

does anyone know the specs? in the past Apple has consistently had the some of the worst brightness and contrast ratios.

....and, uh...you need a new MacPro or Macbook...who are they kidding?

did anyone also notice that they are now charging $19 for remote controls that used to be free!!!!!

What will us pro shooters do now that Apple appears to be removing matte screens across the line? Especially for the MacBook Pro's, it now looks like we'll no longer have the ability for true color editing on the road. Apple really needs to offer an HD-matte option for at least their 17inch MBP, if not the 15" as well. Their cinema displays should also be available in both flavors too. Thank you :(

Agreed, too bad but Apple is NOT a pro video/photo company the way Adobe or Matrox is, they are a consumer electronic products company. Final Cut Pro is just an after thought after they bought Key Grip from Macromedia in order to create iMovie for their iMac line. All the "Pro" stuff they have became a success DESPITE Apple, we always have to fight them on EVERYTHING.

Remember the "Pro" PowerMac G5 which, at over $3,000 could only house 2 hard drives and 1 optical drive...

Yeah, get informed.

Wow, you found a way to buy a Dell 24" Ultrasharp monitor for LESS than $450 when they retail for $699 ??? Check your facts before posting.

I'm a faculty member at a Big 10 University. Our contract price on the Dell 24" Ultrasharp is $399. So, yes, easily had for much cheaper.

I personally prefer Samsung.

Wow, I guess I feel like Apple has kind of given up on some of it's pro user base. Gloss screens are not the best option for anyone working with color and graphics on an everyday basis. I'll reserve judgement until I see the products in an Apple store but my initial impression is that I feel a bit disregarded as a pro user.

Oh yeah, and what happened to the firewire ports on the display?

Glass enclosure ... graphic designers and photographers will have a field day trying to calibrate that thing.

I encourage all those, like myself, who can't use glossy displays [as a photographer, one must realize that matte is the only way one can do accurate color calibration as you stated], to please e.mail Steve Jobs and/or leave feedback on Apple's website, asking politely for a matte option on the MacBook Pros. While consumers may be happy with glossy, those in the photography/print/graphics world rely on matte displays.

We can always buy 3rd party displays, but we can't replace the displays built into laptops. As a photographer, I carry my MBP around with me with my cameras and use it in the field or at the hotel, etc, etc. I do not want to lug around a 3rd party external monitor with me!

It's called a sale. When I bought my Dell 24", it cost half the 23" ACD retail price. Not the same panel, but half the price.

We don't even know as yet what quality the new ACD is.

i think it's gorgeous... but it's a little upsetting that apple's starting to dispose of firewire... kinda strange to me, considering they invented it. sad to see that it's on its way out.

Apple Doesn't Need Us Pro Users anymore.

I've came to the conclusion today that Apple Doesn't Need Us Pro Users anymore. It's a business decision, now the only difference in notebooks is size of screen. NO advantage to buying a "pro" machine. No Matte finish, no easy to hook up for new monitors to our $2,700 new purchased Mac Pros. they look where can they make the most money now and go there. More Virus and Security Holes are coming soon, just as the customer service has gone down the hole over the past few months. A very sad day.

STEVE, WHAT ABOUT THE MAC MINI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes they are live:

Old 23" 178º (horizontal)/178º (vertical)
new 24" 178º (horizontal)/178º (vertical)
Dell 24" UltraSharp 178º (horizontal)/178º (vertical)

Contrast Ratio:
Old 23" 700:1
New 24" 1000:1
Dell 24" 3000:1

Response Time:
Old 23" 14ms
New 24" 14ms
Dell 24" 6ms

Brightness:
Old 23" 400cd/m2
New 24" 330 cd/m2
Dell 24" 400cd/m2

Glossy compensates for a lower quality panel.

Correct - and if you have to look at a glossy display all day you will be heading to the medicine cabinet for headache pills! The color is exaggerated and unnatural DESPITE proper calibration and tweaking! This is terrible.

Phoning It In

Looking at todays announcements, it seems that Apple is resting on its laurels and simply phoning it in.

Nothing exciting.
Nothing for pro users.
Going hog wild with glossy crap
The New MacBook pro is looking less and less like Apple quality and more and more like every other notebook out there.

I am extremely disenchanted with Apple these days.

PS. Thinking my next purchase is a Lenovo tablet.

The Macbook and Macbook Pro screens for quite some time have been TN panels.....so color accuracy would still be not as good as a IPS or VA.

seriously glad i didn't wait for this. I just hate glossy screens, and the black edging would not have matched my mac pro at all! Nice to have LED backlit though:)

EDIT woah didn't release my old 23" is brighter

If you need FW/800 they dropped it from the MacBook to force you into buying the "pro" version...
