That's the little-tiny, itty-bitty scrolling ball. The "buttons" aren't visable. ThinkPads still have nipples.

I see....a little scolling ball. Like it. wonder how it'll match up to my two button MacMice rodent

Hell hath certainly frozen over.

First Intel Macs, now multi-button Apple mice. My god.

Apple is finally growing up! ;) Good boy Apple! Good boy!

I have one! Rushed out to the local Apple store...

They only had about 4 left when I got there around 11:30am:

1) It 'feels' just like a regular Apple mouse; the whole top end of the mouse (by the cable) dips down as the old single button mouse did/does. What's different is that under the hard plastic top, it can tell which side your hand is pressing on before it clicks; so it behaves as if there were a second button there, though there isn't one you can see.

2) The little button in the middle for scrolling is teensy. It really is a ball that rolls, not an "eraser top" like on a IBM Thinkpad or similar.

3) The side buttons have to be pressed together (for now?) to activate

4) And for todays surprise: According to the manual:"Don't install the Mighty Mouse Software disc if your computer has a version of Mac OS X earlier than V10.4.2 or Windows 2000 or Windows XP software installed." (I kid you not, people, its just a USB device, remember?)

What works where:
----------------------
On 10.3.9 to 10.4.1 = Assign primary and secondary buttons and activate Expose. Display dashboard only in 10.4.1 and 10.4

10.3.8 and earlier = Use as a multibutton scrolling mouse

Windows 2000 and Windows XP = "See the mouse control panel."

Who needs:

Powerbook G5
Powermac Dual 3Ghz
Year of HD
64mb cards in ibooks & minis
better range of standalone computers (for switchers who need more than a mini & less than a powermac - NEWS FLASH Windows users already have monitors so don't need imacs)
& so on.....
etc...........

What we need is a f**king mouse with a stupid name. Go Apple!!

Riiiight, because Apple completely halted all other engineering, design and production departments within the entire company to focus on designing a mouse. It's all they've been doing for the past 6 months, it took up al their resouerces. Nothing else is being worked on.

Fair question :) Who needs it? Laptop users--and laptop sales are beginning to overtake desktop sales. One less cord to fight while using AND transporting my PowerBook is a MUST. And all Apple laptops have BT standard.

It seems to be a physically rotating (?) trackball--just very small.

Steve is no longer a dumb-ass. I love you Steve!

I don't think Jobs was ever a "dumbass". Chalk up some of his decisions to his personality that consists of a cup of arrogance, a dash of elitism, and a pinch of yes men. Simmer in a certain % of the user base that accepts his word as holy and there you go. Your own recipe could very. *shrugs*

hang on, isn't the scoll ball going to get clogged up like those crappy old mice with a roller ball underneath? I was forever cleaning those things.

Is it possible to take out the scroller ball to clean it, anyone who's already got one?

Fair enough. I use a laptop so infrequently, that I usually just hook up a corded mouse and that works fine for my purposes. But yes, I definitely see your point (and click). ;)

64mb cards in ibooks & minis - Low end PCs have even less VRAM then low end Macs.(yes, it's true).

Low-end Macs have always had more VRAM than PCs as low-end PCs share their system RAM as VRAM. No dedicated VRAM in low-end PCs.

If the top areas at the front are touch-sensitive, how are you supposed to hold it?

(I already have one)

Just like the old single mouse. It's more "push" sensitive than touch sensitive. It doesn't need to be treated any differently than a normal mouse...magic!

Thanks for the report. Just wondering:

1. Do the side buttons have a physical click you can feel, or only an electronic sound?

2. Are they so sensitive that it's easy to trigger the "squeeze" by accident?

3. Does pressing down on the ball have a physical click you can feel, or only an electronic sound? Does pressing the ball make the whole top shell move down?

4. Is the ball-click so sensitive that it's easy to click it by accident?

5. Can you rest two fingers on the two "virtua" button regions, and click EITHER one without lifting the other finger away first?

6. If you are ALREADY clicking one of the two buttons, can you somehow trigger the other button too? (Like for games with 2-button firing.)

TIA!

One question I have for people - I am seeing a lot of complaining that this isn't a wireless/BT mouse. Now fair enough, wireless and BT are the way things are done nowadays, and it's only reasonable to expect a "new" mouse to have these features, but what do you really need a wireless mouse for? My mouse is always right next to my keyboard which is right next to my computer on my desk. The benefits gained from having something wireless (i.e. the portability) is a non-factor for me when it comes to a mouse. And one less wire? Does that really make a big difference? I am just curious how many people need wireless mouses, since they seem to be making such a big deal out of it. Just an honest question, that's all....

In my case, the "tail" keeps getting hung up on something. I don't really need wireless, but it help keep my desk a little less cluttered and having the freedom to put the mouse where I want it - not just where to cord will let me put it - is nice.

Who the hell restricts access to a computer site? :(
A fairly lazy SysAdmin who is tired of getting email from the boss about how much time employees are wasting downloading QuickTime movie trailers, researching iPod accessories, and building "dream systems" on the Apple Store configurator. *ahem* just a guess, mind you. ;)

Are you saying it's like the 4G iPod clickwheels, where there is leeway when you push down?

What would be more interesting is a BlueTooth version that could act as a remote control as well as a mouse. Handy for presentations, when watching DVD's, etc. I don't really want to have to buy a separate devide to do this function. I would rather have it just be the mouse. Currently we use our BT keyboard when watching movies but sometimes we need mousing functions as well and it's not handy in bed. :) (Hmm... I can just see the ads: "Might Mouse - good in bed, too!")

I know that for a fact since I've been windows notebook shopping w/and for my bf. He doesn't get it.

Apple Says:
--Smooth top shell with touch-sensitive technology beneath, Mighty Mouse allows you to right click without a right button

--Mighty Mouse’s seamless top shell detect where your fingers are and predict your clicking intentions, so you don’t need two buttons — just two finger

--It wouldn’t be fair to call Mighty Mouse a two-button mouse with one button. Especially when it responds to pressure from your fingers in four different places.

So... i dont think they like us calling it a 2-click mouse. i assume there is no clicking besides the "tiny" speaker in the mouse?

Does the ball itself click when scrolling, or is it a free scrolling motion. Please say it's a clicking scroll.
