One question I have for people - I am seeing a lot of complaining that this isn't a wireless/BT mouse. Now fair enough, wireless and BT are the way things are done nowadays, and it's only reasonable to expect a "new" mouse to have these features, but what do you really need a wireless mouse for? My mouse is always right next to my keyboard which is right next to my computer on my desk. The benefits gained from having something wireless (i.e. the portability) is a non-factor for me when it comes to a mouse. And one less wire? Does that really make a big difference? I am just curious how many people need wireless mouses, since they seem to be making such a big deal out of it. Just an honest question, that's all....

I used to think the same thing, until I got a wireless mouse. It's a amazing what a difference it makes. You don't realize it, but the chord creates a drag on the wired mouse. Once you get a wireless, you say, "Wow...this is really nice." I just can't bring myself to go back. Plus, I have an iBook, and a wireless mouse makes life so much easier, because you have no idea where you will be using your computer next or how far the mouse will have to reach.

Devices should to some extent *look* like what they *do*.

Am I the only person who thinks that Apple is putting aesthetics (the seamless look) ahead of functionality?

While I agree that interfaces should look like what they do to suggest their use I don't think Apple's reason for the seamless look is aesthetics. They're very good at multi-user computers, particularly for families. In such a scenario having the mouse behave as a one-button mouse for the youngest member of the family while parents or older children use it as a multibutton mouse is a real coupe de grace.

Besides, I have faith in Apple's ability to make nearly anything look good. If they wanted the buttons to be visible they'd have made it look damn nice.

Also, I just ordered mine. With expedited shipping. I already have twice as many mice as computers. It's one of my addictions.

hang on, isn't the scoll ball going to get clogged up like those crappy old mice with a roller ball underneath? I was forever cleaning those things.

Is it possible to take out the scroller ball to clean it, anyone who's already got one?

I don't see it being as big of an issue as with the old "ball mice" - the main reason those got so clogged up was due to the fact that the ball was rolling along on the desktop surface which was dusty and dirty. Having this ball on top of the mouse should alleviate most of those problems - unless of course the user has been eating peanut butter with his fingers. ;)

Thinking the same thing... I was going to say that since the scroll ball is facing up, it won't pick up every single piece of lint on your desktop. BUT, instead it will simply let dust and other stuff settle onto it from above.

Still though, this is pretty neat. Too late for me to get one shipped with the new Mac, but maybe I'll ask for one as a birthday gift this month. Price strikes me as a little steep, but then again, it has always struck me that Apple charges a lot for their peripherials anyhow.

Damn... these are some nice looking pair of mighTy.... :D

I'm curious to see how well this works in the "real-world"... I don't like accidentally selecting objects, which is why my PB keyboard is set to NOT sense taps.

I'll be stopping in at an Apple store to try it, though.

Yeah, with a laptop I can see it being a lot more useful. As for the cord though, I just ensure I have enough slack on mine and I don't notice any drag. I've used wireless mouses too, and for me, it's not a big deal - I'm quite happy using my MX510. I may indeed have to give one of these boys a try though.

I'm pleasantly surprised no one has brought up the whole "mice vs. mouses" debate, what with our excessive use of the word "mouses" in this thread. Perhaps we all finally know that "mouses" in indeed correct and there is no need to argue this point. ;)

I got as far as the AppleStore online checkout I was so happy to hear that Apple had finally seen sense and produced this mouse but bailed out 'cause it's wired.
I use a BT mouse now and while it ain't pretty it is useful not to have a wire fouling anything on my cluttered desk. I also use BT with iSync and Address Book.
I think BT is not only not dying but I think it's going to see growth with it's adoption for wireless headphones in music players and music-playing cell phones.
I'll look at the Mighty Mouse (crap name) again when the BT version appears, and now I've carmed down a bit I'll also be able to try one out before I commit as I'm a bit concered that it's not the most comfortable looking mouse for large hands and could still do with an extra side button.

A trackball in place of a scroll wheel… so simple yet so effective. Makes you wonder why nobody else thought of it sooner. I wonder if other manufacturers will start replacing scroll wheels with trackballs.

Yep - kinda reminds you of the iPod's click wheel, doesn't it? ;) :)

Douglas Engelbart would be proud.

Why Theres No Bluetooth

I posted the same thing a while back but nobody saw it...

So there's no Bluetooth because there's no room for the battery! The old wired mouse had this big clear empty space above the sensor, but the BT mouse is all white to hide the battery. Instead of the battery, this one has a scroll ball and a ton of sensors. Until the mouse gets bigger or batteries get smaller/better, the Mighty Mouse will probably remain wired only. :(

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD SHUT UP ABOUT IT NOT BEING BLUETOOTH!!! IT ISN'T....WE GET IT.....MOVE ON....

Please stop saying that it's still a one-button mouse!

It's still a NO-button mouse :)

Thats what i'm saying..... also Apple,

It wouldn’t be fair to call Mighty Mouse a two-button mouse with one button. Especially when it responds to pressure from your fingers in four different places. :p :p

The beauty of the squeeze

I just realized the the beauty of the squeeze--and why it's BETTER than a conventional button: for Exposé.

Some people don't realize that you can go in and out of Exposé at will in the MIDDLE of dragging something. Awkward with the keyboard. Awkward with mouse buttons. Pretty easy with hot corners. But ideal with "squeeze":

1. Pick up an icon or selection with the left button.

2. In mid-drag, "squeeze" your windows into view. Doesn't interfere with your clicking finger at all.

3. Aim at the window you want then let go of the squeeze. Windows pop back to full size. (Or if you prefer, squeeze once to trigger Exposé and again to get out of it.)

4. Drop your cargo where you want it.

Extremely intuitive. And it's the default action assigned to squeeze :)

burrrr... it feels a bit chilly out here, I think Hell froze over.

oh look at that in the sky, it's a pig...

I think hell froze over once Apple started to port for Windows (itunes) and making ipods to work on PCs, oh, and jumping ship to Intel.....I think hell is defrosting at this point...and pigs have started to not only fly but to also started flight charter.....

I hadn't thought of that specific application, but you're right! I'm always clicking and dragging to different windows via Expose, and although using my programmed Expose button on my MX510 makes it real slick, this would make it even easier!

Damn, I'm tempted to pick one of these up...
