I understand how it works and that it still physically "clicks". My point is why bother with this gimmicky touch sensitive technology to determine which finger is applying more pressure during the click? There is no practical purpose to doing that. It is much simpler, less expensive and simply more intuitive to have a second, independent button that clicks on its own. I haven't noticed anyone crying out "Dear god, don't have a second physical button with a smooth line differentiating the two buttons!"
I truly do believe that this is just Apple's way of skirting the fact that for years they were ignoring a large segment of their user base that would have liked an Apple branded two/multi-button mouse. This new "Mighty Mouse" is a way for them to avoid having to admit such things. They can say, "Well traditional two button mice were problematic and they weren't really what our users wanted, but now that we have this new unnecessary and gimmicky technology to mimic a two button mouse - our type of multi-button mice are acceptable."
You don't have to agree with my belief for why Apple incorporated the touch sensitive technology, but I do understand how this new mouse works and I think the technology they've included in it is unnecessary and is simply done to try to save face. I also think that due to the inclusion of this touch sensitive functionality a wireless flavor of this mouse will be more difficult because there is less room for the transmitter and batteries and also because the touch sensors will drain the battery more quickly. I just don't understand the design decision. There are definitely drawbacks to using the touch sensitive design, but I don't see the benefit. I am open to hear points on why this is better than another physical button - anyone?
